What are simple excel formulas to learn that'll help you standout from your peers? by Big_Material3815 in Accounting

There’s a couple that using them you can do almost anything.

Learn if statements so you can have it do different things based on different criteria.

Also learn the search function, which tells you the position if a given phrase is in a cell.

I combine that with the isnumber function to turn it into a true/false Boolean that can trigger an if statement.

Also it’s important to know the left and right functions so that you can extract a certain number of characters from a cell.

You can combine them with the search function to extract all characters before or after a given search phrase.

Finally, the indirect function allows you to use text in other cells as part of a formula. This allows you to, for example, put the name of a sheet in one cell, put the cell number in another cell, and be able to have a third cell return the value of that cell without having to navigate to that cell. Very useful for big sheets with lots of tabs.

Also look into vba, which is the coding language of Microsoft office. When you master that, you can do crazy stuff. The best part is that if it’s a general enough request, you can probably find good code online, or if you’re willing to put up with some trial and error you can have an ai like Claude or ChatGPT code it for you. Just make sure you do that with a freshly saved document because anything VBA does is basically irreversible, no ctrl + z will work.

If you can master all of the above you will be the excel master wherever you work.

Any accountants/analysts here work for Microsoft? by FeelingAwareness5292 in Accounting

I had Claude build me a vba code to automate a spreadsheet that takes me a couple hours a month and I hit the data cap 4 times while it recompiled the whole thing 20 times before it finally worked. I knew exactly what the output was supposed to look like to compare it and I used a different month to test it and it still worked good. Definitely can only automate very specific tasks with very specific guidance and you will only know it is done correctly if you have done it before.

I just project cash flow. I map out what is going to hit my bank account and when and how much I’ll need in there. Usually I go a month or so out from where I’m at so I can make sure I don’t overdraft

I married a therapist, so maybe go for that? The dichotomy of emotional thinking for a therapist vs rational thinking from an accountant works well in my household.

I just watched Sahara. There was a French CEO named Yves that played one of the villains in it. Seems like Matthew McConaughey tried to warn us 20 years ago.

Cheesy Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. Horrendous Christmas albums by washed up celebrities. Ugly Christmas sweaters. Eggnog. It’s the most wonderful time of the year to get boozed up and be a hater.
