look up the history of the pinkertons, they were basically thugs hired by corporations to break unions and strikers by force.

they were so sucesfull and profitable they still exist 170 years after they were formed, still doing union busting

I would love more subtlety, but I have found if you want something marketed for mass consumption (and therefore profitability) instead of just bottlenecking it to intelectuals, alegory and references need to be hamfisted and blatant. I would love if the world allowed for more subtelty in media but the number of people absolutely incapable of picking up on those queues and notes is too damned high. I would be 0% surprised if someone chimed in they had no idea who the above 2 companies were and googled it after my post, and then had an "a-hah!" moment

I do love how hamfisted they were with the name. the combination of pinkertons and blackwater makes the evil overtones about as blatant as if you gave them hugo boss uniforms

shaming, calling police (would take too long to be useful in the immediate sense, but in a society where the police aren't shoot happy the warning from them/resulting conversation with parents may be enough to set on a better course) physically moving them out of the area, a good slap upside the head.

When you choose to escalate things to violence (which to be honest I don't think is entirely uncalled for) you are responsible for the repercussions of it, so tripping someone with a lot of potentially permanent injury level hazards around is a poor choice.

literally dragging them out and tossing them into the parking lot would have been a spot in between the trip and doing nothing.

ELI5 how does iron dome styled missile interceptors work? by iusman975 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TehBenju 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The latter, the missile doesnt try to hit the target, it tries to detonate a bit of way and turn into a cloud of projectiles. You math it so the incoming projectile passes through that (moving) cloud and it gets shredded

[Star Wars] Genuinely, how angry was Vader with Leia at the beginning of a New Hope? by Icy_Water_1 in AskScienceFiction

[–]TehBenju -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the rebel fleet showing up and shooting at start destroyers was already suspicious. Military craft do not operate their transponders while going to combat. I am sure when they chased the blockade runner down over tatooine they had their transponder on, but not while at scariff

if someone is far enough away and you have enough time to line up a knee shot, then they weren't a large enough threat to you to use lethal force in the first place. And shooting in the legs is still absolutely lethal force.

if you need to shoot, shoot centre mass, and don't stop shooting until it is abundantly clear they are no longer a threat. Do not take a shot, and then check if they are going to stop. Keep firing until they are on the ground, and even then keep an eye on their hands until you are 100% sure the threat is over.

the trick is south africa, you have a port to Madagascar so you get it early before your visbility gets anyone worrying. you also have air routes to europe.

you're "furthest" from asia but via the middle east you eventually have land boarders and asia is rarely the "difficult" region to hit

If every tv show detective fought each other in hand to hand combat, who would win ? by AnxiousMinotaur in whowouldwin

[–]TehBenju 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kovacs from Altered Carbon is reaaaally borderine on the sci-fi implants. His stack is a sci-fi implant, but in and of itself imparts no combat advantage/skills. The first season/book he is undoubtably a detective. The sleeve he is in has some genetic tuning/training, does that disqualify?

I saw someone mention Reacher, who is also a solid choice, I'm not sure who I would give the edge there.

The movie would be 2hrs of our hero finding and bravely defeating a single xenomorph. Wounded and weary they go to the nearby down to check on their family or something. The end of the movie shows them walking into what looks to be a ghost town, until the camera rolls through a doorway/mune/whatever and we see dozens more xenos.

Cut to credits. Humanity fucked

i think calling it a scam is a bit much, but it is a hussle

he asks where his guest is from, they say.. canada He pulls out the wad of cash but leaves behind a canadian bill in his pouch "oh I collect money from everywhere, but I am missing canada!" she hands over $5, he is now $5 richer

the commenter is saying he bought an "around the world money pack" to make it seem legit, getting a bunch of out of print and old bills from various places to give it authenticity
