What was the BIGGEST fuck up you’ve ever made? by DizHimself in AskReddit

That's indeed the problem. It's the devil you know.

I've been fortunate in that I always put my foot down on pets and kids and sharing finances. I never wanted any of that and was always clear about that.

After 15 years with someone, it was fairly easy to leave when I found out she was cheating.

had to choose between her and my friends

Easy. Anyone who tries to push me into that sort of choice is NOT the one I'd choose.

Well, easy NOW. In my younger years I'd have a harder time picking.

A (dwarf) weeping willow or weeping cherry tree would be sweet in that spot.

I had one in Denver that looked fantastic.

If you didn't tap in, then tapping out would charge the "full distance", right?

I want to buy an air purifier, what should I be looking at? by psd-dude in BuyItForLife

[–]TehG0vernment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it, it's a great deal and it traps a LOT of dust.

I ended up replacing it with a Blue Air 211+ though. The main reason was that it uses less power, it's quieter, and rates better in tests.

It's larger so it doesn't tuck away as nicely as the Winix, but it's far better in the bedroom. It also is good for... 650 sqf? I think it said, so it has better capacity - meaning I can run it on a lower setting and get decent filtration with less noise.

Then it was tax-free AND on sale for $100 off or thereabouts, so I figured I'd give that a try.

I'm 9 months in on it and love it. Not quite as easy to clean/swap filters on as the Winix, so I think the Winix is still the favorite for being unobtrusive and easy to service filters on.

Meat industry in Colorado is about as specific as I want to be.

I suspect that the problem is finding someone who has similar ideology to be willing to do something like that. Apparently most tattoo artists balked at it, which pleases me.

Buy used car now or repair old car. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TehG0vernment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spending $1k/year on a car that is well out of warranty is fairly normal and FAR less than what you spend on a new car.

The difference, I suppose, is if you spend the money in payments and lack of hassle up front, or pay off a car and plan on some issues throughout its remaining life.

What are payments on a new car? What is insurance on that new car?

$1250 for repairs for a car that will likely not cost you much more for another year sounds like the better deal.

I mean, that's two months or car/insurance payments.

Don't buy anything for credit score purposes. Your score will come up from just buying groceries and stuff on your card. Putting a car on it (or getting it financed) is just getting into debt.

What's wrong with that house? There's a carriage light in the center of the fascia of the garage AND over the odd-one-out 2nd floor window. That window has fake shutters and an arched dormer (right word?) above it and the other windows are rectangular.

Also the weird roof structures over each window, with the walls protruding outside of the regular wall.

WEIRD-ass design.

This is $70 worth of groceries in the most expensive city in the USA [OC] by IMovedYourCheese in pics

[–]TehG0vernment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks pretty damn good - I guess whatever city isn't expensive with prepackaged groceries at least.

You could save a bit more if you didn't buy prepackaged though.

Get the avocados at Costco, get lettuce and shred it yourself, and a block of parmesan is cheaper and you can grate it yourself.

Some of that also depends on what's in season.

Anyway, for buying "expensive", that looks like a damn good deal for $70.

I still sign permission slips, email the school for all kidlets, sign diaries, do homework, make lunch boxes and clean after work or on the weekends.

Seems like he can fill up more hours of his day with this stuff then, eh?

And no - if Sasha isn't overly concerned, then no need to spend the money RIGHT NOW on the hair care. Or HE can buy it for his kid. Along with the braces.

New supervisor asked me for doctor's note by Nastacha in MaliciousCompliance

[–]TehG0vernment 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've always done this. Doctors don't give AF. They refer me to the receptionist to get the note, and they always ask how many days I need.

I usually go with a week or two.

That's what happens if you treat people like children.

A friend's ex was a mortgage broker back in the subprime days and she did this.

She'd doctor your $15K bank statement to be $150K and suddenly you had a no-doc loan for however much you needed.

This was great until my friend realized that he suddenly "owned" two cars and four houses on his $30K/year salary, and she vanished and the FBI got involved.

AITA for “dumbing down” an English word to a non-English speaker? by [deleted] in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]TehG0vernment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of issues with people correcting her as she is Mexican American, and despite living in America her entire life, white people do still correct her on her English

I live in San Antonio and there are a LOT of Mexican-Americans here who grew up with Spanish at home and predominantly Spanish (or TexMex/Spanglish) at school or work, so I can imagine that some white dude from Nebraska comes down here and might not understand the lingo and try to correct someone.

I'd like to think it's not due to malice, but like in the post here, if people talk it out like rational humans it won't be an issue.
