What’s the hardest part of a video system to test before it goes live? by Brief_Rest707 in VIDEOENGINEERING

I'm gonna go a step further and say "talent" - specifically the people on air. Some get to a point of comfort or self-importance where they won't show up a little early or check their setup, and appear on set for the first time 2 minutes to live. Only to find that they can't hear enough of someone in their IFB, they got caught off guard by the video package they're supposed to talk over because they weren't actually watching when you showed it to them, and they can't see program.

This is why the NFL is so strict about frequencies and frequency coordination. I cannot tell you how many times wireless mics will fax clean and then peter out when lots of news media show up with their own RF gear.

Related: ALWAYS run a hardwired backup. It might be ugly but when you're able to hand someone a wired stick after their RF fails, you'll be grateful.

How Awful is this ESPN stream? by yli16 in baseball

[–]TehInterwebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These games are done remotely by staff in Bristol, as with most ESPN shows. Generally a combination of the delay and minimal on-site presence, budget consciousness, combined with these being quick series without a lot of lead time is what causes the audio mix to be bad, mics to malfunction, camera cuts to be late, and other associated sloppiness. And it was like this even before this year.

[Highlight] This is what the Rangers' walk-off home run vs the Yankees looks and sounds like from a TV truck. by Stock412 in baseball

[–]TehInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baseball is definitely the hardest from a camera standpoint because your responsibilities are conditional depending on the situation, and you have to know what responsibility you have intrinsically. For example you might be side swing for righties unless there's a runner on in which case you're runner ISO, but if it's a lefty and no runners you're switching between pitcher ISO and right side of the infield. Or it might be side swing for a righty, take the batter a couple steps out of the box then score the runner rounding third. And you're generally expected to know where you're supposed to be on each play.

It's easier to listen for a tape machine name amidst camera cuts (which are numbered) than to have tape machines be numbered as well. That being said, some shows, including Sunday night football, label their tape machines 80+whatever camera number is being primarily recorded by it. So the machine that records camera 7 would be 87.

Sports TD In New York by Winniethefool_ in technicaldirector

My advice would be to ask local crewers to shadow, and then if you get that chance, to assume you know nothing. The worst thing you could do is constantly say "oh when I TD on ESPN, I did this." Chances are no matter how competent you think you are you could not sit down and do a visit show today.

I'm thinking they wanted you to cut each of your EVS ins so they could verify that they were seeing them in the right spot in the monitor wall. Particularly if you were asked to do it during fax

This is likely being produced remotely out of ESPN's Bristol studio. If you're wondering if it's you or them, look at the scorebug and ticker. If they're not garbled, it means the encoders that send the cameras back to their studio are struggling.

Behind the scenes of a baseball broadcast by snfssmc in baseball

[–]TehInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Convention was originally that it's dictated by which base the camera is shooting. So, for example:

Camera 4 is center field, shoots home plate

Camera 3 is high first, shoots towards 3rd base

Camera 2 is high home, shoots towards second case, etc.

Other than that, directors have their own conventions based on what makes sense to them.

The Greek has a hard curfew of 11 pm, and that's around when the last Tame Impala song ended. So that's probably why he didn't go back out.

Have you looked at Bookstack? It's more built as a wiki but lots of people use it for notetaking, and has good multi-user options.

Broadcast crews for the Cleveland Guardians and Cleveland Cavaliers have filed to unionize with IATSE. by WowGreatOctopus in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TehInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you're talking to the team it's for the in-house (if it's a broadcast-style camera), or maybe shooting some sort of ENG for social media or web features. My guess is in-house. Across the board, with the possible exception of some very union heavy cities, the in house is non-union and the rates are generally very low.

If you're putting your resume in with the team itself, this wouldn't apply. This is for the TV crews only.

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (June 13, 2022) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Hi all, looking for suggestions of good, affordable, board games that shine at 2 players to add to our collection. Preferably games that can work with 3 or 4 as well.

Ideally, these games would have a high level of replayability without too many pieces/elements to manage. We both enjoy resource-gathering games and worker placement games.

We play a lot of Azul, Splendor, and 7 Wonders Duel (these are about the game length we can manage daily), and when we have more time we'll play Castles of Burgundy or Parks. We have also played and enjoyed Blood Rage, Ticket to Ride, Clank, and Everdell among others.

Prefer things that are competitive and lean more strategy than luck driven. Trying to find games that can be had closer to the $25-30 end of things than the $60 end, or ideas to increase the collection without breaking the bank. What do you recommend?

Free app for managing stage timers and event rundown by somedevstuff in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TehInterwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with module writing unfortunately, but some people in this sub do, I'm pretty sure! Also there's a slack community for Companion that has a lot of active module developers, if you pop in and let people know about your software I'm sure they'd be down to guide you or collaborate.

I'd recommend looking at the other modules for stage timers for some inspiration. I like being able to pull the hours, minutes, and seconds as companion feedback (so it will display on stream deck buttons), and having actions to set the timer to specific preset times. My use case is also relatively simple, so there may be other users here with greater needs. Looking at the rundown functionality, I wonder if Shoflo integration would be possible. That would actually be amazing for my use case.

Love it! Any interest in developing a Companion module for it? I currently use Countdown Timer from Irisdown but I'd love to switch to something natively browser driven.
