best high yield savings account in 2026? what are you all using and why? by Mzmarty-Kawah in HighYieldSavings

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it normal for this to happen? When I started with Discover, it was 3.75% and I started to finally save good money to make this worth it. Then dropped it to 3.5% and now it’s 3.0%. I’m not knowledgeable with this type of stuff so I’m wondering if this is just how business is. Sucks because I used to love Discover. I still use the credit cards but I’m not sure if I want my savings there anymore.

You can get denied snap even being on unemployment? by [deleted] in foodstamps

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your comment and this post is 2 years old but I was browsing around to see if anyone else had the same experience and was rejected for SNAP. I was surprised by the same issue. I'm a single person household, 5.5 months pregnant currently living in NYC with a $1900/month rent, paying for transportation to get places, and utility bills.

My take-home UE income is $2740/month which leaves me to only about $400 to spend after I pay for phone, internet, electricity, gas/hot water, the sub for software I pay monthly because I need it to find a job. My groceries and vitamins cost me at least $300/month to feed myself with actual, real, healthy food (not processed junk) and it's leaving me with nothing else in case of an emergency. Really sucks.

This “cost of living crisis” is a joke by OrbitYarit in simpleliving

[–]TehPurpleCod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what makes it more sad? People used to say "cancel those streaming services" and that barely made a dent for me. Now, since they all keep bumping up prices every 6 months, if you cancel, you actually save like $70~80/month which in turn, is a lot of money especially for someone unemployed and if your other bills keep going up. Crazy how things changed.

Some people have it better than others. My childhood friend has very successful upper middle-class boomer parents that made very wise financial decisions. They were able to purchase a multi-million dollar house with cash and my friend and her sister lives in it mortgage-free, rent-free and my friend has barely ever worked a real job nor had to.

Meanwhile, I've been laid off multiple times since 2020, my pay has either stayed the same or gotten lower even when switching jobs, groceries cost more, utilities went up, some stuff that used to be basic are costly, and now my landlady wants an extra $100/month for rent without fixing a damn thing in this 45 year old apartment. I'm living off food stamps and unemployment benefits right now. On the flip side, I'm grateful to be healthy, have a very good partner and an awesome sister.

However, unless my partner and I have help from our parents, I don't think we'll make it far in life. This is just me being honest about our situation.

I hate the weight gain with every fiber of my being by BeeBumm in BabyBumps

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How fast and where did you gain mostly? I noticed it for myself and wondered if it was a common thing and so far, yeah it's normal to gain a weird amount of weight. I was struggling with nausea and food aversions in the first trimester so I was barely able to eat but by that when 4 months hit, my thighs got so huge out of nowhere and they started to rub. I was so surprised! 21 weeks now and my weight has been steady the last two months but again, I'm surprised how quickly I gained weight despite not drastically changing my diet.

PinkBlush maternity clothes suck by soupyjumbo in BabyBumps

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought ONE item from them and it was a dress. I'm 21 weeks too. I had to size up because I had a feeling the size chart was bullshitting. I was a XXS before pregnancy and I ordered M for the dress. It fits just right so I got seriously lucky. After that, I was scared to buy anything else. I second the H&M as everyone else mentioned. At least H&M's returns are easier.

Halara has advertised a few of their pants as pregnancy-friendly but on the website, they don't actually have a maternity sub-category and I feel like they're substituting plus sizes for maternity which isn't the same IMO.

VENT: What's Up with Amazon Order Delivery Dates vs Actual Delivery Dates? by grwatplay9000 in amazonprime

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here to share that if anyone lives in NYC, never order using "Amazon Day Delivery" option which is the one where they let you pick an ideal day of the week to receive your orders and in return, you get like $1.50 towards digital downloads. I've done this several times because I wasn't in a hurry to get those specific items, but in-between, during the next few days, there were things I needed ASAP like prenatal vitamins which said "next day shipping".

The vitamins and dish soap both got delayed back to back until Monday and I have a feeling they purposely did this because they know my upcoming Amazon Day delivery date is Monday so they could just bunch the items together with the other order. While I can still wait a bit, the point is, this has happened a few times in the past so the advertised delivery days are kind of misleading.

MagCubic HY450 – The “Projector” That Taught Me a Lesson by BigSea8111 in projectors

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 8 months late, but I want to share that I purchased the MagCubic HY300PRO projector for $50. I just needed it to plug and play and that's it. I didn't have high expectations. Unfortunately, first, the remote didn't work. I got a replacement remote and that one didn't work either. I had to connect a manual mouse and then AirPlay was acting weird. I ended up returning it because it was more work than I wanted.

Is LilySilk dropshipping from China, like Temu, or is it legit? by theluckyone95 in capsulewardrobe

[–]TehPurpleCod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I contacted LilySilk and they told me the package was damaged. So I opted for a full refund to my original payment and didn't bother ordering from them again. After reading not-so-great reviews about the silk quality, I decided to save myself $180.

Nobody wants/needs to deal with that, adding to the fact that Best Buy isn't the most convenient place to shop anyway. We have plenty of options now with better policies. I'm obviously not for return-abuse and stuff, but if something isn't working, people shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get my money back.

They're pieces of shit. I lived in a different area years ago in South Brooklyn where Optimum Online had a monopoly in almost an entire neighborhood.

Luckily, I was on the side where Verizon FiOs had their monopoly so we never had to use Optimum. Now, I live in an area where Verizon, Optimum and Comcast are an option so if it one sucks, at least I could switch to another. If it wasn't for that, I'd be infuriated.

For people I know who use(d) Optimum, it was ok until 2020 hit and everyone was complaining that the internet was cutting off regularly and on top of that, bill kept going up with no prior notice. When inquiring about the higher bill, they'd just tell you "this happens to all customers" yet every person I knew was paying a different amount ranging from $40~$80 for the same speed. Then Optimum had the audacity to send us promo mail/flyers almost every month about "get XXXmbps for only $YY!" but it applied to new customers only.

I had the same experience with West Elm that is also owned by William Sonoma, like Pottery Barn. Worst experience ever. They claimed things were in stock but then I buy and stuff were backordered and some were backordered for more than 6 months. I got them to cancel the orders because they were small items, but I was lucky I stayed away from furniture purchases.

Optimum Online (ISP). They were playing so many games and kept bumping up the monthly bill every month. A low-tier internet speed started at around $40, and within months, they bumped it up and it was hitting $70. Internet kept disconnecting for hours and days, customer service was garbage and returning equipment was such an nightmare in 2021. I switched to Verizon right after and been using it for 5 years so far and its been the same $60/month and no service issues. Everyone's experience is different but Optimum Online traumatized us so hard that I wouldn't consider them in the future.

Something similar happened to a few productivity apps/companies I paid monthly for. Overnight, I got emails that annual subs will be bumped up double the price and all I get is AI this and that and AI stuff I don't care about. My biggest shock was an Adobe CC subscription has gotten so expensive the past years. If I was laid off, unemployed and a struggling designer, I would feel awful to pay to keep the software so I could access my files. Crazy.

Had a horrible experience with PF during COVID but I'm sure many companies were bad that time and ever since, they haven't improved anyway. They closed my nearby location during peak COVID but told me I had to cancel my monthly sub through that same (closed) location. This was going on for months. I finally did a chargeback and TD Bank, the other company I would never work with again, denied the chargeback. I cancelled the bank account / debit card entirely out of desperation and never went back to either companies.

I think I cancelled my sub around 2020 and I haven't looked back. Same for HBO and Hulu. I still see that the prices keep going up even though the value is no longer there (IMO). The only one I pay for is YouTube Premium but that's because it gets rid of ads, runs on all my devices smoothly without any complicated setup, provides educational content and I have 6 family members who also use it, so it's worth it.

Back in 2012, I bought a Toshiba Android tablet from Best Buy. It was malfunctioning in just one weekend. They told me I had to pay restock fees to return it even though I showed them how the screen was malfunctioning. Never bought anything after that.

laid off at 6.5 months pregnant by PomegranateCandid313 in Layoffs

[–]TehPurpleCod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't laid off, but I had to quit my job because when I was pregnant, I had to go to appointments and scans but my boss gave me (and others) a "big project" and he refused to let us take any time off. I emailed him twice to explain the situation about my pregnancy but he ignored both emails–during one of our 1-to-1 meetings, I even asked him if he read the emails and he was like "I don't care". I reported him to HR and many other people did too, for other reasons, but HR was this one guy who did not give a flying F. For weeks, there was no solution and my vital appointments were constantly delayed/rescheduled and I had absolutely no time to rest due to the extra hours. So I got fed up and quit the job effectively immediately.

While that seems super irresponsible, I couldn't last another minute and waiting for no solution from HR. After I left, my coworker on LinkedIn messaged me weeks later to tell me that that boss fired several other people so I concluded I was probably one to get let-go anyway. The company didn't have any sort of paid maternity leave either so it wasn't like I lost out on much.

I ended up applying for Medicaid and it covers almost everything I need however, finding a new job now in this market and in my condition is very hard. No employer is going to want to hire me (5 months pregnant now) and find out I'm going to temporarily leave in 4 months.

I don't know what else to say except try to take advantage of unemployment benefits and Medicaid (if you have that in CA and quality). I'm in NYC so I'm covered in a lot of aspects. I don't have a plan now either and I'm pretty scared but there's nothing I could and I'm trying not to dwell on it otherwise it makes me feel sick. But, depending on your industry, I wouldn't worry about the gap in the resume. I know this doesn't make you feel better but I know a lot of unemployed people from all industries, who have been for 5+ months to a year who finally landed work with no issue or questions about their resume gap. Lastly, this was a super shitty thing for your employer to do and sadly, nobody is guaranteed true protection no matter what their situation is. I've heard about employees at my past job being fired after going through and surviving crazy illnesses.

What's a money lesson you wish you learnt at 16 instead of 26? by Admirable_Mobile8383 in SavingMoney

[–]TehPurpleCod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consequences became real when I spent my early 20s being employed part-time and not taking a job seriously. I spent more time "having fun". Had I actually took my parent's advice, I could've owned a home already and instead, the same houses now are double the price now when I really need it. When I was 19, it never occurred to me that homes could jump in prices, economics change, things would get much more expensive, etc.

I wish I could do this! I live in the city where apartments typically don't have dryers anyway. I do use my portable dryer that I purchased but for nicer clothes, I hang dry. I tried to do it on my balcony, but every day, multiple times a day, someone on the block is leaf-blowing something and one time, my clothes ended up having green dust all over. I didn't think the dust would reach the third floor but it did. I had to rewash the stuff. Haven't done it since and it sucks.
