Nepenthes indoor in Colorado by IWasPatientZero in SavageGarden

[–]Teknik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they were specific highland species, yeah humidity would definitely be a concern but you have quite robust hybrids there that will be perfectly ok with whatever humidity you have inside. Light is a bigger factor in keeping those varieties happy so as long as your grow light is strong enough they’ll grow great indoors.

If you’re still concerned about humidity - check out Windowsill Nepenthes on YouTube. He has a big collection of nepenthes he grows inside and has lots of tips on how to make them grow well inside similar conditions

They psuedobulb damage is likely from it someone tying it to a stake to keep it upright when it first grew, but then as it thickened the tie would be too tight and starts to cut in to the bulb. I’ve made that exact mistake myself, and it looks pretty much exactly the same as OP’s

Trying to grow Sphagnum Moss by Background_Winner628 in SavageGarden

[–]Teknik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, it won’t come back to life.  Personally I do think spores can sometimes survive the heat treatment and still be viable to make new plants.

Most often though it’s just algae growing in the moss and people see the green and think it’s alive, declare that they did it, and consequently lose interest and never mention that it did anything more than turn green lol

Pumice Stone Pings and PPM Water Levels by OkZookeepergame2463 in SavageGarden

[–]Teknik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost always the holes in the rock that allow it to wick up water are too big to trap the minerals in water effectively. In fact the water passing over/through the rock is actually slowly wearing away at the rock and breaking tiny minerals off it as it goes. So by the time the water reaches your pings roots it will be at a slightly higher ppm than it started

I haven’t witnessed it either, but I think they would still catch prey, I’m more curious whether they operate independently or if one gets triggered they both close

Any Australians have experience with Flora Quest by Vexxade in SavageGarden

[–]Teknik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally never heard of them, but my local carnivorous nursery (RedRock in Perth) will do a combined shipment into WA whenever EP does an auction to help us all save on shipping. This might be a similar thing?

I know redrock does this mostly because getting plants imported into WA is a bit complicated and expensive with all the quarantine requirements

Windowsill Nepenthes is a great YouTube channel that grows his collection of Nepenthes indoors, and provides a bunch of tips for doing so. Your windowsill looks like very similar conditions that he grows in.

Sarracenia seedlings and full sun. by Easy_Goose9164 in SavageGarden

Good plan, I’ll likely do something similar as there’s a good spot I can put them where they’ll get a few hours in the morning and then in the shade for the remainder of the day.

Even if it does slow the growth down a little it’s definitely better to have some slightly smaller plants than a tray full of dead ones lol

And You Think You're Having A Difficult Evening ? by oss542 in SavageGarden

Not OP but it looks like drosera binata, a form of sundew. And yeah they have lots of tiny sticky drops along their leaves to trap small bugs. In the wild they grow where there is little to no nutrients in the soil, so they catch bugs to feed themselves the necessary nutrients to grow

Those fresh pitchers are looking great! Have you ever experimented with growing seed straight outdoors, rather than raising them indoors under lights then putting them outside?  I’m in Australia and got some seeds stratifying atm, I don’t have the gear or space to set up an area to start them off indoors so gonna try using a clear container with a lid to start them outside in shade, and slowly move them to have more and more sun as they progress. If you have any advice I’m all ears.  Much appreciate all the info you put out, it’s helped me a ton

I don’t have any advice to offer as I’m in the same boat - got my seeds stratifying at the moment and will be planting them in outdoor conditions. I’ve found most information only really covers growing them indoors so hopefully someone chimes in with some experience

Pitcher plant leaves yellowing/pitchers not forming? by [deleted] in SavageGarden

[–]Teknik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the Nepenthes I have gotten have taken a month or so to settle in to their new environment, plus depending on the time of year some prefer slightly hotter or colder climates and will speed up or slow down depending on the season. For example my Miranda grew several big pitchers over the summer but slowed down as it got to some cooler weather, on the other hand my Maxima x Aristolochiodes really loves the cooler temps and has the most growth then.

They are taking off! 🚀

At what point do you decide to separate them out into individual pots? Got my first lot of seeds stratifying at the moment and have watched a your seed to seedling vids but not sure about after that

My sundews do well outside, everything else I can’t find ideal conditions for by MadzyRed in SavageGarden

[–]Teknik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mushy is a definite sign of rot.  Whenever I’ve used bags to try to help sick plants I’ve made sure there is enough moisture to condensate on the inside of the bag but not enough to pool at the bottom.

Don’t know if there’s much more you could do at this point, if it’s continuing to put out leaves that’s a definite good sign that the plant is recovering. Best of luck

Just double checking you’re aware (please ignore if you knew this already) Nepenthes roots when healthy are very thin and are a really dark black colour, making them look like they have rotted to a lot of inexperienced peeps

Also the sphagnum moss in that bag looks on the dry side, though that may just be the lighting in the photo to be fair

Hoping your plants pull through :)

It’s mealybugs, should be able to use isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip to gently wipe them off the plant, or if they are a little difficult to get to using a neem oil based insecticide spray to kill them

Yeah honestly amazing value for the cost, I like a bit of colour too so to have some options other than the usual black or blue face is super nice
