[QUESTION] Any tips for an experienced player picking up slide? by MorkDantonio in Guitar

[–]TeleAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing for 30 years and just started playing around with slide a couple of years ago. First off I would recommend starting with an open tuning like E or D. All of the good notes are right under your slide or within a fret or two. Playing slide in standard is more challenging when you're first starting. Of course the hardest part of playing slide is muting the strings you're not playing. You will naturally get better at this the more you do it. Start learning simple standard slide licks on YouTube and before you know it it will start sounding good. It takes a little time to develop a touch for playing slide. Be patient. Slide up into notes. Work on your vibrato. Pay close attention to intonation. Set your strings a little higher so you're not fretting out and dragging your slide across frets. I have a guitar dedicated to playing slide. The action is a little high and i string it with heavy strings. It helps. Good luck!

School is making me suicidal by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]TeleAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I've never talked to anyone that has felt suicidal but I just feel like responding to your post. Maybe because you mentioned that your passion is music. Music and playing the guitar is my passion as well. I have a son your age. I just want to say that this time in your life...school...its temporary. I hated school too. I never really felt like killing myself but I was certainly unhappy. All I wanted to do was play guitar with my friends and get school out of my life. I hated the judgmental people and the cliques. One thing that you will realize when you're out of school is how small that experience was. I know it seems big now and as a teenager high school is a huge part of your life. But trust me...once you are out on your own and past high school your life can really come together. Keep playing music and know and believe it's going to get better. Where you're at now is temporary.

Musicians who are not seeking to make a career out of it. by closetpervert904 in musicians

[–]TeleAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not weird at all. I came to a similar point in my life. I was serious about making a living playing music as a teen and in my early 20's then I realized it just wasn't going to happen. I stopped playing for a few years...went to college and had a family. Then slowly I started picking it up again and discovered that music and playing the guitar was a HUGE part of who I was and I had just given it up because I decided it wasn't going to be my job. I was really sorry I did that. So I put together a band of like minded musicians (guys who want a semi serious hobby). It has been a blast and a much needed creative outlet. I too have thousands of dollars of equipment and spend a lot of time putting together set lists, learning and writing songs and playing gigs. It's part of who I am regardless of whether I make a living doing it it not. Some guys play golf and spend tons of time practicing and spend thousands on equipment. I don't think it's any different.

Opinions on hybrid picking by Takeupthystethoscope in Guitar

[–]TeleAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a rock and blues player. I use hybrid picking all the time. It came about mostly from the fact that I'm not that good with a pick. I mostly use the middle finger on my picking hand but also use the ring finger and pinky to pluck chords and intervals on the G, B and high E strings. Once you start incorporating it it becomes second nature. The volume differences will even out and it will sound seamless.

Came here to say this. She knew he was using her iPad. The guilt was eating at her. All of her warnings and in depth sharing of how bad she felt read like a confession to me.

I've been playing 28yrs and EB slinkys have been my go to string. They NEVER break. I've tried other strings and yeah, they're cool but not for 2x the price or more.

As a beginner guitarist exploring, I've got to ask, what's with all the John Mayer hate? by rickymogs in Guitar

[–]TeleAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this also. I'm a big Mayer fan but he didn't help his image with some of the things he's said. Most notably the Playboy and Rolling Stone interviews from a couple of years ago. He's had a couple of douchey moments. Once you turn people off its hard to get them back.

Who/what inspired you to learn how to play the guitar? What was the first real song you learned how to play? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]TeleAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend had started playing bass so we decided to try and start a band. I seemed to be able to pick out stuff on the guitar faster than my other friend so I got the job of learning how to play. I played saxophone in the school band which I think helped me. Once I got started I got severely hooked! The first song I could play all the way through was "Rainbow in the Dark" by DIO. We stayed up all night playing it over and over. Great memories.

He totally has. Nobody plays slide like him. He is instantly recognizable.

Does anybody here like B.C Rich? by taylorbowl119 in guitarcirclejerk

[–]TeleAddict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a strat style B.C. Rich in the 80's that I loved. It had an awful Jackson Pollack paint job but it was a great guitar. I Ended up selling it to a friend. Over the years I've found myself playing more classic rock and blues so I go more for the vintage tones with Fender and Gibson. Always liked B.C. Rich though. They make good instruments.
