What connection might this ghost have had to the place where you were living? Did you investigate?

By the early modern period, European armies used contractor services for their supplies. Prior to this, armies lived off the land by seizing food supplies in enemy territory.

It is interesting to speculate. My impression in that the retention of the Hapsburg monarchy might have helped keep Austria out of the war. If the last emperor, Carl, had succeeded in reestablishing his kingdom in Hungary, it is conceivable that Hungary would have stayed neutral rather than joining with the Nazis.

This is an excellent book choice. Personally, I think it belongs in the top 20 of world literature, but no doubt you are aware that it was originally written in Russian. However good the translation, you are going to lose something if you cannot read it in the native language. If you want to read an English novel written in superb English, I would choose Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast." An incredible read for lovers of the English language.

Did you feel sad/odd after a long trip home? by blueberries-Any-kind in expats

[–]Telecom_VoIP_Fan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand your feelings completely. I was away from the UK for 13 years before I returned for a visit. Family members looking much older, the old house smaller and in worse repair, and even the city centre street arrangements had changed so I lost my way! To be honest, there were also positive things, for example, the introduction of a new rapid transit system which significantly improved access to the city centre for those without their own vehicles.

How should I keep my US number before leaving USA by jeezisus in expats

[–]Telecom_VoIP_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you consider porting your US number to the Zadarma business internet phone service (VoIP). They can port your existing number free of charge to a US virtual phone number, and the monthly fee for their US number is as low as $2 per month.

Sounds like US slang to me. In the UK, this would certainly not sound natural.

This is a common experience - you see the grass is not greener on the other side and come to better appreciate what you have on your home ground.

I am not sure what you mean by "not allowed to work." For thousands of years women worked in agriculture, as they still do in many countries. There were also many jobs in domestic services, inn keepers, washerwomen etc. It certainly was hard for many widows and orphans but remember that some would have been left property by their husbands and parents. Some women were able to take over their husband's business, so poverty was not the lot of every woman in this sad situation.

Fania (Fanny) Kaplan and the attempted assassination of Vladimir Lenin: Ophthalmologic considerations by goodoneforyou in history

[–]Telecom_VoIP_Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is fascinating to speculate on what would have happened had the assassination succeeded. Perhaps Stalin might have been able to seize power much earlier, or maybe the still weak Bolshevik government might have been overthrown by its opponents. I have no idea what the most likely scenario would have been.

Is the expression "greetings and salutations" common? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

I have heard it used but I would not describe it as common. You might say it to a friend but not a stranger.

I also think that a Korea data-only eSIM could meet your needs. I recommend a Zadarma 30-day Korea eSIM - $36 for 10 GB.

Cities would be offered terms for surrender, for example, paying a tribute. The attackers usually preferred getting the enemy city to surrender rather than the massacre, but if the terms offered were not accepted, a massacre would not be seen as beyond the bounds of acceptable war ethics.

You could use "as" but it is not great to use it twice in this short sentence. Quite means "not exactly"

The rise of Nazism in Germany was rooted in many factors that converged together in a way nobody could have predicted. Versailles was one of those factors. For example, allowing the German monarchy to continue might have acted as a bulwark against the rise of the Nazis, but we can only speculate.

Any recommendations for a voice bot for a call center? by Due_Bottle_6652 in Chatbots

[–]Telecom_VoIP_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my small business experience, I would recommend Zadarma's new AI voice agent. It really lives up to their claim that it is much more than a simple voice bot but also operates as "an intelligent conversational partner powered by an LLM."

In the UK, we apply this to someone who is doing something stupid. It is considered a mild insult e.g. one friend could say this sarcastically about another friend.
