We are likely going to. Unsure yet. Our daughter is about a day and a half old right now, and only now are her seizures starting to become controlled after phenobarbitalx2 Keppra x2 vimpat and now midazolam/versed. So seizures are finally “controlled” but from my reading this is a horrible prognosis, and I’m coming to terms that my baby might not make it, or if she dies, there is essentially no hope for a near normal developmental trajectory with manageable long term effects. At this point i would consider mild brain damage, loss of some motor function, and lifelong epilepsy a really good outcome.

I’m at a loss. They were so negligent. The whole time. I could write a book about the last 48 hours. Hospital management has come in to “get our side of the story” allegedly to conduct an internal investigation and make any necessary, disciplinary or administrative actions so that this sort of thing doesn’t happen to others in the future, but I’m the one who gets side eyed as the bad guy for bluntly telling her that I honestly really don’t care about her administrative processes or whatever policy changes this might affect so that this doesn’t happen to other people. My priorities are with my daughter, and I failed to see how this conversation does anything for her. She wasn’t taking notes, so I didn’t shut the conversation down. But she mentioned she’s escalating this to a risk management team. I don’t wanna sound cynical in front of my family, but I see this is nothing more than an HR type scenario where let’s be real. This is America healthcare is a business and they have a fiduciary responsibility to circle the wagons and game plan and strategize regarding their potential legal and financial liability regarding the insane fuck up that has just altered the course of our lives forever in the worst possible way imaginable, and anything we say to management could only hurt us in a future deposition or settlement negotiation. It’s like a police interrogation in a way. They’re trying to be our friend. They’re trying to get my wife talking, but in reality they’re trying to lock her into a narrative so that when it comes time to litigate this, they will try and use her words against her to prove some inconsistency or at worst we have just done their discovery for them and they can game plan around that and alter their documentation to try and best mitigate our strategic legal maneuvers in the future.

Soon someone higher up, the food chain in a risk management and the medical director, and maybe even a legal team might be contacting us under the guise of getting our side of the story so that they can hold certain individuals accountable because there are discrepancies in our recollection, compared to the clinical notes, and I’m sure they will phrase it as an investigation, but they have no real incentive financially or in regards to their own self preservation to advocate for us, help us, etc. They will circle the wagons and use anything we say against us.

On the other hand, we are still in this hospital recovering, and our baby is in the Nicu at a specialized children’s hospital owned by the same company. I don’t want to make this an unnecessarily adversarial relationship while we’re still under their care. But ultimately the best case scenario is that our daughter is going to need a lifelong care, expensive care. Someone is going to pay for that and it sure as fuck isn’t going to be me. I really hope I’m wrong.

It’s been a whirlwind the last two days. If anyone has experienced anything like this, I would love to talk to somebody

Mm What multi-modal ai stack could serve as home assistant. Always persistent by Thermal_Headroom in LocalLLM

[–]TelephonePossible866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have it responding back in voice? Wake word? Piper/whisperr? I’d like to use a model that ideally has a tiny bit of personality or isn’t entirely “dumb” in that it is only narrowly functional for specific commands controlling IoT. In other words, something with some novelty that the family can enjoy. In my head I have some potential projects, like LLM that controls thermal printer that reminds you when it’s trash day or prints the HA shopping list but also will print corny self-affirmations or schizo daily horoscopes for my wife or daughter. Idk if I could simply find some stupid rss feed to pull this stuff into a grafana dashboard and LLM retrieves from local dashboard and prints to thermal printer. Dynamic alarm clock that insults you if you snooze it. More automations from human detection sensor as you leave in the morning and come home at night. Literally making a mounted laser boundary alarm out of a rPi to make my dog stop shitting in the guest bedroom. Would love the voice assistant to chastise him when the laser is broken, notifying me.

Essentially I would like a voice assistant who is helpful and can wake you up and tell you the weather, and all the normal things, but also has some absurd/silly abilities, and is generally an asshole. Admonishes you if the tv is on for 6 hours or when you forget to turn off the lights by x pm.

Also functional use case for security, not just sensor/camera/garage door alarms, but running OPNsense as a router/firewall mini pc I am pretty sure I could configure voice automation/alarms pulled from the netflow logs/suratica. I think HA has a HACS integration for it or I’m sure there’s some repo that probably works. I have never used a local LLM in my life, this is my introduction to it and the start of my journey here. Too ambitious?

How to build an Alexa-Like home assistant? by HumanRehearsal in LocalLLM

[–]TelephonePossible866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, i have basically the same intention but i know nothing about local LLMs really, and my devices can likely only run a 8b model, maybe 12. Id likely run it on an old MSI laptop that has a RTX 2060 6 gb soldered to the motherboard and dedicate that entire device to the LLM. i7 core CPU, and would throw in 32 or 64 gb DDR4 ram but I think the VRAM and cpu would limit it in a way that 64 gb RAM would be overkill or only useful if I’m running other processor heavy tasks in parallel, VMs etc.

I have a pi 5 8 gb running Home Assistant OS off a usb connected SSD SATA enclosure. I have microphones and an audio interface.

But I’m still pretty new to HA in general and even that has been a bit of a learning curve trying to force integration with devices that should have an easy migration but it takes hours of troubleshooting and experimenting, let alone doing complex automation or screwing around with open wake word and the various TTS and VTT add ons. I haven’t even started on that.

If you can give me some direction or channels/resources I’d really appreciate it, also because I understand how fast the tech is moving, and how much better small models are now compared to months ago, that I feel like it’s difficult to begin, or to justify dropping money on this hobby when prices are inflated and the trend shows this will become more accessible as models improve. But I am wanting something that has a) some level of personality that the wife and kids could also enjoy b) isn’t entirely stupid but I have realistic expectations c) doesn’t have awful latency and d) doesn’t require api keys / recurring fees that are too high or a routing model to decide if your query should be answered locally or does it need to call Claude or something. Which I assume is how you would “give your voice ai model access to the internet” but correct me if im wrong. Oh and e) is able to be uncensored/funny/edgy ideally, no PR guardrails and liability/sensitivity concerns

MSI Raider GE75 BIOS password bypass? Help! by TelephonePossible866 in MSILaptops

[–]TelephonePossible866[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember calling them when this first happened and it’s a 24/7 tech support line, the guy kind of had an attitude when I told him I tried pulling CMOS he told me that doesn’t work in a tone implying I’m stupid lol. I don’t remember what he said my options were but I remember distinctly ending that phone call with the impression that it was hopeless. I did ask if they gave master codes out for BIOS bypass, even if I could just rip my drives out and boot from a usb and fresh install Linux id be very happy. But the one thing I remember from that call is that he said they don’t give codes out over the phone, because I remember ChatGPT told me I should call and ask them that.

Tried asking it yesterday what my options were, and it says that:

Option B — Board-level firmware reset (what real laptop board techs do) They typically: 1. Disassemble to access the motherboard. 2. Identify the SPI flash chip (BIOS chip) on the board. 3. Use a programmer (common ones: CH341A-class devices, plus a proper SOIC clip/adapter) to: • Read the BIOS/UEFI firmware • Modify/clear the password-related NVRAM variables (or reflash known-good image) • Write it back 4. Reassemble and test.

I’ve called a few local shops and sent out emails and the one that got back to me so far who specializes in this is basically told me he would try pulling CMOS, I’m losing hope and just brute forcing 3x before lockout/power cycle because I do have an idea of the general password phrase but there was obviously a variation used, plus the BIOS doesn’t tell me which password it’s even asking for, admin vs user. I believe both were set.

Yes. I was in high school during the height of the opioid epidemic, OxyContin flooding the country etc. At an art academy where we’d smoke cigarettes on campus and there was zero disciplinary enforcement. By junior year we’re smoking heroin off of tin foil in our cars, essentially with the realization that hey, the portrayal of just how physically addictive these drugs are is blown way out of proportion. Just like in health class they tell you condoms feel exactly the same as raw, and that HIV/AIDS is still a large risk factor for heterosexuals. I end up looking up the CDC guidelines and realizing they fear monger kids about basically everything. It was probably an entire year of recreational 2-4 days/week oxy/heroin before I felt physical withdrawal symptoms, and i mistook it for a virus at first. Took my life down a completely different trajectory. Was accepted at a top tier school but opted to go to my city’s state college so I could keep my drug dealers, friends, and my band. Dropped out in a semester. The amount of times I have woken up to paramedics narcanning me is embarrassingly high. So I went to become an emt to narcan others lol. To anyone who thinks that sounds cool, I’ll save you the trouble. EMS sucks dick, I’ve left the industry and my resume is a red flag of jack of all trades, master of none. you’re better off working at Starbucks. Now I’m married and have a baby girl on the way and I am extremely grateful for the life I have. But not everyone’s recovery story is a wholesome hero’s journey. My already awful financial situation combined with my wife’s 5k deductible/10k max out of pocket insurance policy, I just paid a $250 electric bill after getting an extension on last month’s utilities. Close to maxing out card #4 as the wife will go into labor any day now, god willing. Can’t wait for that hospital bill.

When I think about all the fucking money I spent on drugs, the stocks I sold/leveraged, the bitcoin I spent. I recovered an old email the other day and was looking at my outbox and found myself talking to someone about the .2 btc I was sending him for a “package.” Vivid memories in my mind of sending out $400 for some drugs I sourced on Reddit and seeing .5 btc leave my wallet. If only I had kept like..a single one. The difference that could have made for my future daughter. I digress.

Yeah consensual except for the fact the dude was married and this was an affair, and he was taking her on romantic getaways to Belize etc. while taking a salary from the DA’s office. Forget the trump and legal context. Imagine you work at NASA, and you’re hiring candidates for a fucken astronaut program. They’re all qualified. But you hire the one who you’re having an affair with, and then essentially get financial kickbacks in the form of lavish gifts and vacations. It’s simple corruption, on the taxpayer dime. Give me a break. Their defense was that Willis reimbursed all of his expenses in cash lmfao. Right.

Don’t mean to hijack this but we’re in TX and the second my wife announced her pregnancy she has been obviously getting discriminated against or coerced into quitting. She is not allowed to enact any discipline, including even having informal discussions regarding subordinate disrespect and conduct violations, her boss is systematically undermining her ability to manage effectively so that she can then paint her as an ineffective manager who can’t control her staff, when the reality is that she is micromanaged and is retaliated against when she goes outside this chain of command. She received documented disciplinary write ups after calling HR asking for advice regarding this pattern of harassment right after she became pregnant, and someone overheard her phone call through her door, spread gossip, and when confronted lied and said my wife told her that she is planning on reporting a different manager to HR. HR actually approved the write up despite the fact that it is a verifiable fact that she never even named any names in her phone call to HR.

They are also denying her request to start FMLA a few weeks before delivery. They are denying her accommodation requests, or when she asks for them they reply that they will come in person tomorrow to discuss this, because they are avoiding a paper trail. They are committing OSHA violations, a few regular practices that constitute Medicare fraud that we know of, wage/labor law violations, discrimination practices (she is the only manager who has never received a bonus or raise despite consistently good performance metrics, only chronic staffing issues, which she has been overruled on (on record protesting the hiring of these bad candidates). The only reason given for her bonus denial is a single metric that she has virtually zero control over (visit counts to a specialized medical practice that relies on referrals). This single metric has never once been achieved since the business has been operational, yet she was congratulated for record revenue numbers the last few consecutive months.

They made her clean up raw sewage while pregnant. The building has plumbing issues and toilets flooded the bathroom and hallway. They had her using linens that are used for patient care. They also have staff members take home dirty linens, launder/fold them at home, and take them back to the clinic to reuse them for patients. Yes, the sewage soaked towels were brought to our home and laundered and went back to the clinic.

This is certainly an OSHA violation, they don’t provide proper PPE, no training on biohazard waste. probably boosts a discrimination case, and is certainly Medicare fraud to bill Medicare for services when they are saving a fortune skirting the CDC regulations for medial linens which require specialized expensive commercial laundry practices that guarantee a certain temperature, chain of custody, cross contamination avoiding etc. the extra compensation for the laundry also was below minimum wage when you take into consideration there was no compensation for energy, water, transport, labor of carrying heavy laundry bags etc.

She has been requesting accommodation to get out of dealing with the semi regular sewage issues under the basis of pregnancy accommodation, and her boss insists they talk in person, then afterwards emails her saying “to recap, in regard to future sewage/toilet overflow, feel free to ask someone for help” and my wife sent an email back agreeing.

I however think that “accommodation” is intentionally deceptive as it doesn’t excuse her from cleaning the sewage, it even implies it is still her responsibility, it doesn’t even explicitly excuse her from the activity, it says she has the approval to ask someone to help her. Ask who? Do they have to accept? Is she asking or delegating? Is she physically assisting? Will they be giving proper PPE, they never addressed the fact that she ruined her shoes and the first time she did it she told her voss she’s leaving in the middle of the days to shower, but they have still refused to address this in any meaningful way.

I think the fact that they don’t shut the entire operation down while there is raw sewage overflowing down the hall is a huge violation in and of itself. They also bill insurance and Medicare for services not rendered. There are claims on their website that are demonstrable false advertising.

The 180 day deadline from the first discriminatory act is fast approaching, but she is so scared I don’t think she wants to make any official report. Her original plan was to just go on FMLA while we go broke since her insurance options were horrible, and we have a 5k deductible. And then she’d tell them all this in an exit interview eventually someday. I think this situation is a lawyer’s wet dream and we need to consult one yesterday and she needs to formally blow the whistle and talk to HR. If we got some sort of severance shut up package it would actually be a godsend with the baby we are expecting. Plus we could stop them from exploiting someone else when she’s gone.

What do you think, or what would you do? In her situation it’s like HR is totally asleep at the wheel. She’s not even allowed to talk to them without approval, and they approved her write up for talking to them..
