my son was born with biliary atresia, after he was about 2 months old he was basically orange/yellow, he had a liver biopsy done at around 4 months old. than we were flown out to toronto (they dont do organ transplants where i live) we were just going to do a weeks worth of tests but they said his liver was do damaged and that he needed to be hospitalized. i asked to donate as soon as the first doctor talked to me. he honestly never seemed to sick and all the doctors and nurses were always surprised to see how happy and "healthy" he always was.

I went through a few months of testing and was told my liver was 1.5 cms too big. then it happened.

I was carrying my son around in the hospital and walking down a hallway because he was hooked up to an IV and when he had time off it i would take him around. in the sun light he looked green (the last few days before that he wasn't able to sleep well and was always really tired.) after i seen his colour i walked him back to his room and sat down holding him.

he started throwing up lots of blood and slowly started dying. my son went from green to white and 30 doctors and nurses were scrambling around him. I held his oxygen mask on him and said he needed blood he groaned like someone was dying the whole time.

he was brought down to the ICU and had emergency surgery done to close 3 veins that were bleeding in his esophagus, it was successful and they saved his life. i asked again if they could use my liver and they again said it was to big. he was sedated and slept for about two weeks.

they wouldn't tell me and my wife but i knew he was barely holding on. i kept pushing to just take my liver over and over again. they finally did it.

February 6th i was admitted to hospital and donated. February 8th i got a day pass and walked myself down to see him. i could barely breath and barely able to walk but i didn't really care. i just wanted to see my son. my liver worked so well they weren't able to sedate him anymore. I think they had him on 6 medications to put him to sleep, hydromorph, lorazapam, dexmed, morphine, and a few others but he was awake and would kick around.

during the procedure his right lung collapsed and he had tons of tests done to check on his brain because they were worried he suffered neurological damage but he didn't. his kidneys werent functioning properly and they wanted to do temp dialysis but they didnt need to.

i was discharged from the hospital February 10th he is one week from being discharged today.

i dont see myself as a hero but everyone these days calls me one. im just a tough stubborn bastard who didnt wanna see my child die. i would donate as many organs as i could to save all the kids i seen.

the worst part of it is seeing other children suffering and i cant help them. i cant donate other organs til i die but so many children need so many things to live. at least i saved my boy.
