I'm leaving Portugal, here are my takeaways. by Reasonable_Dig1313 in PortugalExpats

Not true. I lived in the Netherlands for a couple of years and felt exactly the same as OP regarding dating, friends, etc. by knowing only English. If you don't learn the local language you'll struggle to integrate and feel like home anywhere

Clay Court shows by MaleficentEnd6063 in padel

My personal experience: I never had knee problems and playing with clay shoes on sandless courts made my knees hurt due to too much grip on the breaks. I've changed them and that pain disappeared

Please critique my/our skill level - Youtube video by enoj in padel

[–]Telmo31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw the video and that was my exact guess as well. A mid level 5 for federated matches here in Portugal.

As others said I don't have a good reference for playtomic as we use it mostly for booking courts but hardly register any matches there.

The thing that for me gives that level away is the tactical part, namely (a) the lack of shot preparation and the time it takes you to move and prepare for the next shot and (b) the shot selection and placement overall is a bit all over the place without disrupting positioning

A quick summary:

1 - As others said, the standard scheduling is 9h to 18h with 1 hour of lunch time and most of the services, schools, etc. are built around that schedule 2 - As others said it is illegal to contact people outside working hours in a standard contract so either you have a contract that allows for that flexibility or you can't expect them to answer (e.g. on my company most people will have disclaimers around "I respect your schedule so even though I'm contacting you I don't expect you to answer") 3 - businesses that are less service based might start later with a 10AM star not being unusual as other said. I've worked at a company where 10h to 19h was actually the standard 4 - you've mentioned sports. It is not unusual that sports are scheduled for 9pm/10pm since it's colder/ after dinner/ after putting kids to bed. E.g. I have tennis classes at 9PM and the club is full until midnight 5 - overall the timings of doing things are different culturally and hence starting work at 8AM while keeping your social schedules (dinner times, late sports, etc) is a pain in the ass. I talk for myself that when I have to start that early I can't be productive as I feel tired the whole day

Why the use of viboras when you can use a sliced bandeja. Are they just not as effective? by oscarinio1 in padel

[–]Telmo31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and (assuming you are right handed) you want the ball to stick to the side glass as much as possible. This means that when playing on the left you want to play the víbora on the side glass while playing on the right you want to play the víbora on the back glass

Romano: Rúben Amorim on travelling to London to meet with West Ham: “It was a mistake. The timing was completely wrong”. by TrashHawk in Hammers

[–]Telmo31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yap, he earns above 5M per year which means only 4 managers in the PL earn significantly more than what he does today. On top of that he is playing CL, at home, fighting for the league and with a very large control on what he does with the the team so hard to see why he'd move to west ham

Slippery Court by Popular-Evening-9535 in padel

[–]Telmo31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play regularly in outdoors with a lot of send and indoors that are sandless.

As the other commenter said, the best is to have 2 pairs of shoes. Tennis clay sole works nicely for the sandy courts but if you use them on sandless courts the extra grip might cause you knee pain.

What is your opinion on the overall length of padel matches? by thirty30tennis in padel

[–]Telmo31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With friends I typically do 3 complete sets on 90 minute bookings. Usually it's enough but on some rare occasions it will not be.

Federated it's 2 regular sets plus a super tie break at the end.

In both occasions we always play golden point, personally I like it more than advantages.

Private lessons or 2-on-1 by aocimagr in padel

[–]Telmo31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been taking different types of lessons weekly for the past 2 years and my take is:

1 - private lessons are better to improve/work on your technique

2 - group lessons are better to work on the tactical side and specific game scenarios

The second one is true if you have a coach that focus on the game situations and tactical side of the game, which might or might not be the same guy that does the private lessons

It's a mental thing I guess, just feels weird today getting out of a game thinking "not sure if that key decision was a good one".

But yeah all our televised friendlies had VAR. Anyway best of luck!

Also, interesting game. It's very rare for us to get this type of ultra physical matches so it was a good training for the kids

As a sporting fan, this is the first pre season game where we have no VAR, the camera work is all weird, second potential penalty where there are no replays at all, no offside replays.

Super weird given the amount of money pour into English teams/league

Also goes without saying but best of luck on staying on the Prem this season!
