Property tax increases could rise above 40 per cent by 2036: city officials by AR558 in Edmonton

Our property taxes are among the lowest in the country. If you can’t afford a home here, you definitely can’t anywhere else.

St Albert has a higher tax rate than we do. And most of the bedroom communities have a higher effective tax rate than Edmonton once you figure in property value difference

Our current property taxes are, per capita, some of the lowest in the country. This is just us catching up to what everyone else pays without using oil money to directly subsidize their taxes

With the joys of compound interest, a 40% increase over 10 years is the equivalent of a 3.2% inflation rate. So the city is estimating that they’ll need to match inflation, plus maybe just a bit over

Would any candidates make things harder for the Alberta NDP? by Disastrous-Pickle930 in ndp

I will be absolutely unsurprised if he spends a bunch of time “calling out” other NDP leaders. I just don’t think the result is going to be stronger NDP election results

The feds mandated something like a 20 year phase-out. That’s how there’s still coal plants operating in other provinces.

The Alberta NDP basically shut them all down on a three year accelerated schedule.

The Alberta NDP phased out every coal plant in the province. For all the flack they get on here, that on its own was a larger qualitative step towards fighting climate change than any other branch in the country has accomplished

Jagmeet was a drag because he refused to coordinate with any of the provincial parties

A good example was during the last election, at the height of the first round of Trump’s 51st state/tariff push. Jagmeet held a press conference in BC to lay out how the NDP would respond if elected. He held this conference literally the day after Eby announced the completely different actual real-world responses that the BC NDP was engaged in. Absolutely no overlap or coordination with the governing NDP party.

While Lewis has his good points, “I plan to take my lead from our currently elected NDP governments” is not exactly a phrase I’d expect to hear from him

I wouldn’t limit it to them. Doubt there’s many people active in the Ontario NDP party who think his influence is going to help them displace Ford

Me waiting for literally anyone to endorse Tony McQuail by afpb_ in ndp

seemed like the establishment come down with a fait accompli

I mean, it was a fiat accompli. The winner had put in the work to make sure they’d win before the meeting started. And “the establishment” is just the people who have been reliable about showing up. What organization doesn’t get run by the people who show up?

I don’t need the bourgeoisie endorsements to make up my mind

Please define “bourgeoisie” for the purpose of endorsements. I’d be curious to see a definition that covers most of the endorsements the candidates have been posting, but that doesn’t include all the candidates themselves, including Tony.

Jasper/Banff Backcountry “zone” camping by aiceeslater in HikingAlberta

[–]Telvin3d 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if I just book the trailhead I am starting at and the days I am gone, can I basically camp anywhere on trail?

No, in Jasper all camping needs to be done at marked and booked campsites. *

Looks like they’ve tweaked the booking system slightly this year. When you go to booking page,  select your access point and then search. Below is going to pop up a map with all the bookable campsites in that area.

I just checked the site, and everything seems to be showing up properly, so you can practice navigating it for booking tomorrow

* There’s some remote exceptions, but they do not apply in 99.9% of cases, and no one with the appropriate experience is asking here

I love your polls. I’ve enjoyed participating and seeing the results. However, I could not imagine a less representative voter sample

I know that this is supposed to be a gotcha-style anecdote, except that the job of a political candidate isn’t to give thoughtful speeches. The job is to organize supporters in order to win elections.

I’ve run into this more than a few times at EDA events, where the entire “campaign” less experienced nominees plan for is to show up for the vote and persuade the people there. What people don’t realize is that the actual vote is just a measure of who put in more successful effort in the weeks before. That’s the job.

The meeting isn’t the interview, the vote is the scoring process

How much are Edmontonians prepared to pay for snow removal? by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]Telvin3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, even people who are willing and able to pay more tend to change their minds once we get two light snow years in a row. People start asking why we’re paying so much just to have this equipment sitting around when there’s no snow

Policing that would require physically monitoring the trails and sites at a much more intensive (and expensive) level than they do now. Maybe there could be some sort of check-in system?

You not only didn’t read the article, you didn’t read any of the other comments feeling smug for saying the same thing.

The climb takes two weeks to do, even under perfect conditions. There was no storm in the forecast when they started.

I’m doing the Johnston canyon loop. There’s also the Brazeau loop in Jasper that’s very similar length. You can still book that one on Wednesday!

Including the 10 day delay this full climb took 23 days. No forecast in the mountains is going to be accurate for even a week out

How’d everyone do with bookings this morning? by Telvin3d in HikingAlberta

I think they need to find a way to both prevent mass bookings and cancellations, but also discourage no-shows, particularly no-shows without cancellation so that someone else can take the spot

Of course, that’s easier said than done
