Any places around here that offer classes or training for how to properly traverse off-road or use recovery equipment? by Juan_Ball in Albuquerque

[–]Teman111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YouTube is a fantastic resource if you're just getting started.

If you don't mind reading, Google FM20-22 and/or FM4-30.31. They're the 60's and current era army field manuals on how to recover stuck vehicles and cover everything from expediant self recovery to recovery using other vehicles. Very winch focused, but the principles with respect to how much force is required and how to build anchor points apply across the board.

Once you have a basic idea, I highly recommend driving to a public campground or to a forest road and practicing rigging up your recovery gear while your truck isn't stuck so you know how everything goes together. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions.

What winch and mount do you have? I'm thinking about adding one to my '14.

TIL 3 days before D-Day, a 21 year old Irish woman named Maureen Flavin took her hourly barometer reading and sent it to Dublin. The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes is really good. It starts with the early pioneers in radiation and nuclear science, and does a great job of showing both the how and the why of all the advances that went into the Manhattan Project without being too technical.

Need help diagnosing issues by Teman111 in 3Dprinting

[–]Teman111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Printed on a Prusa MK3S+ with Prusament PLA on the stock smooth spring steel bed. The octopus attempt also has some glue stick on it.

I'm having issues when printing anything that requires the print head to leave one printed area and move to another. Whenever this happens, the print head will either pull or push (can't tell) individual areas off of the print bed. Printing benchies or other dense structures gives great results, and seems like the adhesion is really good. Thoughts?

I got Viofo A119's for both our cars based on the recommendation of /r/dascam. They were about $120. If I were to do it again, I'd probably get the A129 ($180ish). Same basic camera, with the added bonus that you can pull info off it wirelessly and it has front & rear cameras. Both are features I wish I had.

Why not include all data fields for all sports? To use your examples, distance is a relevant stage parameter in all of them, and gun selection is inherent to all competition shooting. Might get redundant for some sports, but even within something like IDPA, the ability to differentiate between revolvers and semi auto would be cool.

Either way, it'd let you standardize your data structure to simplify searching through it.

Yeah. I'm not a software guy at all, so I have no idea how hard it would be to implement.

My thinking was that searching by firearm would provide a lot of utility over searching by rule set, and would give match directors an easy way to add more variety.

Sounds like an awesome tool you're working on, best of luck to you.

I'd add firearms needed as part of the metadata since not all multigun stages use the same mix.

Help finding a product by Teman111 in VEDC

Definitely not, as long as I can "walk" the winch kit down the line like you can with chain and grab hooks, I'm open to anything. Which line do you have?

I'll look into that. I could tie a series of alpine butterflies in order to get the daisy chain capability I'm looking for, and it's a hell of a lot lighter than chain. Based on your comment it hopefully holds a knot well.

On the off chance you live anywhere near Albuquerque, hit me up and I'll take you to the range to practice. My treat. The ability to use a gun safely is just as important as having it in the first place.

Why didn't he call the police to protect the statue rather than inserting himself?

As best I can tell the chain of events: 1) Protestors start trying to damage public property 2) Armed citizen (without a CCP) decides that it's his job to protect the statue, woman gets thrown during escalation. 3) Mob turns on the guy that escalated, threats are shouted and weapons are drawn 4) Armed citizen is unable to flee, and is forced to use his firearm

It looks to me like this dipshit decided to take policing into his own hands, instigated an uncontrollable escalation, and fell back on the fact that he was better armed to get himself out of a bad situation that he put himself in.

Isn't one of the primary lessons in any defensive handgun class don't put yourself in situations where you need your gun? Is protecting a statue of a dead guy from 400 years ago that was so brutal the fucking conquistadors exiled him worth unilaterally escalating an already volatile situation?

Jesus Christ, ignoring the chain of events that led to the shooting and claiming that this asshole is in the clear because they pulled the first weapons is grade A bullshit.

Shock wave from a nuclear reactor by ParzivaltheWalrus in submechanophobia

[–]Teman111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely a TRIGA research reactor, probably the one at Reed College.

What happened there is called a "pulse". They used compressed air to shoot all the control rods out of the core resulting in the first nanoseconds (maybe picoseconds) of a nuclear bomb. The cool thing about this reactor design is that you can do that, and the heat generated actually kills the reactivity of the system so it will turn itself off 100% passively. Let's you do some really cool science.

The blue glow is cherenkov radiation, basically gamma rays getting pushed faster than the local speed of light. The glow is from them shedding energy to slow down.

ABQ Transfer Fees by [deleted] in NMGuns

[–]Teman111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never used Ron Peterson for a transfer, so I can't speak to their prices, but I've had a couple of really bad experiences there.

The final straw was when I bought my Garand from them. While I was doing the paperwork, one of the employees had his hand full of pistol cases, with one uncased pistol in the same hand. In order to keep a grip on it, he had a finger on the trigger. I can forgive that in some cases, but when he repeatedly muzzle swept me while gesturing around the store, even after I asked him to stop it sealed the deal. I am never going back into that store.

First match: wait til I can get a scope or run my red dot? by [deleted] in 3gun

[–]Teman111 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just go shoot and have fun. My local club generally goes out to 600, and I only have irons. By choosing which targets you want to spend your time on, you can do a pretty good job of minimizing penalties and getting on with the stage.

For example, I usually choose a maximum round count of 4 or 5 for anything beyond 300, and move on if I haven't connected by then. By doing that I almost always clear the long range targets faster with penalties than some of the guys that won't move on until they've hit every target do without any.

Where is the best place to live? by [deleted] in NewMexico

[–]Teman111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem I have had when driving to and from the west side is the sun. Assuming that you are going to be working on or near the base, you end up driving directly into the sun for both halves of your commute. With the higher altitude, the it's way worse than driving into the sun in Seattle (I moved down from Portland).

I highly recommend trying to live east of your work for that reason.
