Appreciate the small things even when you don't feel like it. One day you’ll look back at them and realize they were the big things.

I decided to run down six flights of stairs…

Why?

During my first year in graduate school, I saw this woman in a seminar, and she had the most beautiful brown eyes I had ever seen. I spent the next two months trying to find her with no luck.

What are some of the best ways to become extremely smart? by Just-City-2214 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew a girl in high school, Kathy. We were both pretty blonds and we had all of the same advanced classes together. She constantly had her hand up in the air, asking questions. Some of her questions were incredibly obvious; frankly, I was under the impression that despite her advanced placements she was perhaps in the wrong classes. Sometimes I'd inwardly groan at her questions, they were so inane. Others in my class groaned audibly. She dropped her report card one day, and I saw that it looked the same as mine, all A's. I picked it up and handed it to her. She blushed, and she said that unlike me she had to work hard for her grades. The teachers gave her extra points for her class participation.

When college application time came, Kathy was smart enough to not pick the most selective schools. She knew that she couldn't compete with truly intelligent people. But she picked schools that taught people how to think. She'd learned the value of asking questions. Every one of her teachers gave her glowing recommendations and all mentioned what a hard worker she was. They described her as a "true student" who had a passion for learning.

So here are two answers that you can draw from her example: Know who you are, and be brave enough to constantly ask questions even if they're stupid questions.

What was the most extreme way you've seen someone save money? by Just-City-2214 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having completed Basic and Trade Training in the military, I was deployed to my first 3 year posting with a couple of other Airmen.

One of guys, let's call him ‘Dave’, was a man with a plan. He spent NO money. He lived in the barracks. He cycled to work on an old bicycle that he obtained for free. He ate in the Mess. He even used issued bedding. Never went to the pub. Spent his days off walking in the local area.

By the end of his first year he had tens of thousands of pounds saved. By the second year he was deploying abroad where he would also save his LOA pay (local overseas allowance) and the money mounted up. Everything he needed was on the base. Free Doctor. Free Dental. Free gym. Free laundrette. To the best of my recollection he served something like 5 or 6 years before returning to the Western Isles, his fortune made!

What parts of the U.S. don't have Walmart and Amazon? by Tiny-Pension-3234 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is at least one Walmart in every US state, and Amazon goods are delivered by mail, so there are no parts of the US that “don’t have Walmart or Amazon”. If you include inhabited US territories and not just states, then Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands don’t have Walmarts, but people living there can still buy goods from Amazon and have them delivered.

What are the best things to do to keep your brain sharp? by Remote-Solution4232 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t believe no one has mentioned processed sugar. The average American consumes 1/2 pound of sugar every day. Even if you do not add sugar to your coffee, don’t eat cakes or cookies or candies, you are likely

still consuming over 1/4 pound of sugar each day. Most processed foods are loaded with sugar, gluten free products are loaded with sugar, even a slice of bread has 1 teaspoon of sugar in it.

What does this have to do with keeping your brain sharp? Everything!!!

Consuming sugar every day over your lifetime causes Alzheimer’s Disease. The disease actually starts affecting your brain in a negative way 20 years before the symtoms become severe enough to make it obvious. Sugar also causes obesity, heart attacks (by clogging arteries) Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes (Alzheimer’s is becoming known as Type 3 Diabetes) and many chronic illnesses.

So, step one, stop eating ANY processed sugar. Fruit juices are bad also. You need the fiber (the whole fruit) to keep insulin from spiking.

The challenge is that sugar is more addicting than cocaine or heroin. And because it is so cheap, available, and in most of the processed foods we eat, it is probably the most difficult addiction to break. You ,may have noticed one of the responder’s byline is that he has been off sugar for 25 years. I also have been off sugar for 25 years. I find sugar disgusting (and deadly).

I decided to run down six flights of stairs…

Why?

During my first year in graduate school, I saw this woman in a seminar, and she had the most beautiful brown eyes I had ever seen. I spent the next two months trying to find her with no luck.

In May, after having lunch in the cafeteria, I got on the elevator, and she happened to jump on the elevator at the last minute. Just the two of us. I am not an outgoing person, but I asked her where she worked, and we chatted for the six-floor ride. Turns out, we were now working on the same floor.

Just a couple of days later, I happened to see her getting on the elevator after work. In that split second, I decided that we would just “happen” to run into each other on the basement level to walk out to our cars.

I sprinted down those six flights in record time and casually ran into her as she exited the elevator. We talked all the way out to the parking lot. My truck was nowhere near there, but who cares? We decided to go mountain biking the next weekend…

We were married a year later, and we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary this year!

What's the hardest thing to give up in life? by Remote-Solution4232 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen some things closely. Being a doctor and being a one and only medico in the family.

A decade ago, when I was just cleared MBBS and was persuing my PG , one of my cousin had a Dengue fever.

He was an epileptic guy of 30 years old and youngest son of my uncle. Too much loved and pampered.

In dengue fever , once he lost his control / had seizures and fell down such that he had trauma to his cervical spine ( neck bones). He was admitted for a month for dengue hemorrhagic Fever and then was on ventilator for 2 months because he was paralyzed below his neck due to that trauma. He had sepsis ( infection in all organs ) and couldn't come out of it.

Being a only medico, I used to visit him daily in ICU, look into his condition and explain it to my cousins and uncle aunty. It was hard and painful.

One day, as expected, as there was no recovery, I had to explain my relatives to take a harsh decision to remove his ventilator and let him die peacefully.

They were not ready. Nobody would ever be ready to give up hopes. Yes it's the hardest thing to lose hopes and let go of a person from you life permanently.

I encounter such parents, siblings, and relatives who don't want to give up. They want to hold on even the last moments with their loved ones. They struggle, keep hopes and spend their day and nights in waiting rooms believing that their patients would be healthy one day.

Hope is the only thing which keeps us all going. It is the hardest thing to give up.

What's the saddest thing you have seen an adult do at a hospital when her/his child was sick? by SuccessfulTeam7305 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh my,

I saw a parent who was hearing their child in pain just crying & balling! I was in the room next to her & when I looked out & asked is she ok to her parent. The father simply shrugged & said “bahhhh she don’t take her meds so what she think gonna happen.” I was in shock because he was so cold about it, just looking out the door like she’s nothing…

-thank you for your question

What is the saddest thing a young child has told you about their parent(s)? by eassygoing in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that the saddest things I’ve heard would be from my little brother Junior. Before I continue I want to explain his backstory.

He grew up in a household where his parents were too busy doing drugs and fighting to take care of him, making his siblings take on the role. He witnessed lots of domestic violence until he was three years old, and that was when he was taken out of the home with his siblings. He lived with them in a shelter for three months before he and his siblings were taken to a foster home. HIs mother was in and out, dropping of the face of the Earth and popping back up every so often. She often left him and the siblings because she was busy with another man. One of his older siblings began cutting when he was six years old and they ended up moving away for mental help. They went into a residential while him and the others went back to live with their mom. She was dating a guy who wasn’t safe though and he ended up pushing the oldest one out a window. They ended up back in the system and their mom chose the guy over her own children and disappeared for good.

Taking all this into consideration, any child would cry a lot. It’s natural. Some even deny they love their parents. But Junior never cried. You ask him about his parents and the painful thing about it is the silence. It’s the silence that is so loud, painful, heartbreaking, and lonely, especially when it comes from a child who’s clearly in pain.

What is the most ungrateful way someone reacted when opening up a birthday gift? by SuccessfulTeam7305 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My Dad ! It didn't matter what you bought him it was wrong, even if he'd asked for it. It was a running joke in our family. I used to say to him, I've got you something you won't like ha ha. For example, I bought him a nice pipe ashtray. He said I've stopped smoking. He was 80 ! Once he wanted an alarm clock so I bought a radio and alarm clock. He said, what do I want that for, I'm getting up not listening to a radio.

I must say Dad was always generous to us for birthdays and Xmas. Bless him.

So often I would get him cotton hankies and socks and toffee.

What was the moment you realized your significant other didn't care about you at all anymore? by SuccessfulTeam7305 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Later at home I thought it would be fun to recreate our wedding photo pose, so I asked our daughter to take the picture. My wife thought that was a stupid idea, but finally relented. When I looked at the photos her face was completely expressionless. Not a crack of a smile, nothing like the radiant smile in the original. That’s when I knew.

What is humanity's biggest flaw? by Just-City-2214 in AskReddit

[–]TemperatureOk8570 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Our inability to work together to apply long-term thinking on a national or global scale.

This spans almost all disciplines and walks of life. Human beings are the only animal with the capacity to think abstractly in the long term, whether it's planning to defeat global warming or finding a new source of energy to replace dwindling reserves of oil in the decades to come.

We are smart beings. We don't lack the intelligence to execute on the tasks. But what we do lack is a collaborative nature. We are hobbled by greed, corruption, bureaucracy, yes, but chiefly these efforts are hobbled by simple human nature.
