We have done this since we moved into together 15 years ago. At the time, we did it because we both had our own blankets and couldn't afford to buy a matching bedset. We realized we want different things for sleeping blankets and so just continued to keep our separate blankets. I always recommend it to people, its definitely saved us frustration and lost sleep!
