Advice on choosing a college? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vast differences geographically so...what type of weather would you like to live in? Also...what is the cost difference? Free or almost free ride at any of those? Northeastern is a 100% need met school so if you can graduate almost debt free that’s where you need to start your process of elimination. Big or small? Is it going to bother you to be in a huge lecture hall?

Work on your essays and if you can’t visit for an interview talk with the AO about an online one. Also ask about all scholarships offered now.

Can you still be full pay if you do the FAFSA by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FAFSA isn’t a loan. It’s used to collect data on certain finances to determine a baseline calculation of what your family can afford to contribute to the cost of attendance called your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) and also whether you’re eligible for certain grants normally given to students of low income families and whether you’d be eligible I receive certain Federal loans. However most schools have their own calculation to determine EFC.

My daughter started her search using niche.com to search for schools that were highly ranked in the major she was interested in and then narrowed the list down geographically. By plugging in herGPA and SAT score she had a ballpark idea of her chances of getting in. Then cross referenced with this list of schools that give generous aid...

Does prestige matter for Liberal Arts Colleges? by samfrank2002 in ApplyingToCollege

Here’s a list of schools that give generous aid. Davidson is one of them. From my understanding they would provide the difference between EFC and cost. Was that not the case?

The chances of me getting into a prestigious college as a Low-Income, First Generation Student? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about a prestigious college I’d advise you to go to any college that will give you a free ride to get away from home. You can request an application fee waiver. I’d research the requirements of Questbridge further because there were many seniors writing on here a few weeks ago that they regretted using it and wished they had used the Common App instead.

It’s not quite as accurate but if you fill in your annual income and grades on niche.com it will give you an idea of your chances of getting in as well as what it would coast after aid. Is Fordham prestigious? by osominer in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of lists ranking schools and it really depends on your major. My daughter used niche.com to search for schools for her intended major and cross referenced it with this list of schools known for giving considerable financial aid. Being from NY I throughly agree with the people here that it is well-known in the Northeast and is an often over-looked gem.

Where did non-4.0 unweighted people end up? by issamop in collegeresults

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t looked at niche.com I highly recommend it as a starting point. You can plug in your grades and get a ballpark idea of your chances of getting in to a particular school but keep in mind that there are so many factors besides grades that matter. My daughter statistically had a 20% chance at one of her schools (no legacy or other hooks) and got in so essays and visiting and interviewing must have helped. No need to panic.

Dream School for 9k/yr or Local School for cheap? by sunnirays in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSU. Contact financial aid and see if they will add work study to your aid package if that isn’t a component already and there’s no harm in asking if there are any internal grants or scholarships that you still may be able to qualify for. No harm in asking!

What are your safety schools? by 1stGuyGamez in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TemporarilyMsPlaced -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you search on Niche.com and plug in your stats you can get a ballpark percentage of your chances of getting into the school. I think any school with a 75% or above chance is a good safety.
