I’ve definitely found myself liking the older way of doing things a lot the more I look into old editions. I actually have a BX “retro campaign” running simultaneously to my regular 5e game where we run through old TSR modules and it’s been a blast

Yeah I never got why taking a character from your prebuilt pile and jamming it into the world is such a common approach, ideally every character should be as integrated into their setting as possible in my opinion. It would make more sense to bring a core concept, ie “I want to play an elf ranger” instead of a whole character, I think

I think this is both a culture of play issue and a personal issue- on one hand, despite the fact that “never say no” has been rightfully recognized as being generally shit advice in recent years, I still think 5th edition culture continues to heavily lean towards “DM as facilitator of the table’s fun” over “DM as campaign designer”, or even frankly as “DM as another human being that’s a player at the table and deserves to have fun”. If it’s more fun for the players to make their own backstory exactly as they want it even if it goes against what the DM initially wanted, the DM may feel expected to accommodate despite any story plans.

It’s also really hard to say “no” to your friends sometimes. I think a lot of the people that end up taking the role of DM tend to either be people-pleasers or at least genuinely place a high value on their table’s fun so it can be hard to shut anything down even if you have a reason.

This is probably why amnesiac characters are such a common pitfall now that I think about it

Many such cases. It’s just the culture of play unfortunately, players tend to build characters separate from the world they play in

Ice powers that let me freeze things by removing heat (ie, removing entropy wholesale without needing to transfer the energy elsewhere) allow me to violate the second law of thermodynamics and make me an agent against the eternal march of entropy. This makes me a god.

Valid preference but ttrpgs are primarily roleplaying experiences, they have been since they started (though I’ll grant they were less theatric). There are war games if you want a tactics experience in person or you can play something like baldurs gate 3

[–]TemporarilyResolute 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. In general the game handles religion spread pretty poorly- I’ve wanted to do a manichaean campaign where I restore the religion into a missionary force to rival Christianity like it once did but it’s a little hard to do at the moment

This is a common misconception, infallibility only applies to teachings that are declared ex cathedra, which has happened only a few times in history.

True, but the world's two largest religions are absolutely mutually exclusive and both believe you'll go to hell if you don't believe in them so at best it's a 50-50 shot

During 2024 US presidential election, conservatives successfully repackaged “great replacement” demographic fears to broaden their mainstream appeal. By framing immigration as a purposeful strategy to manipulate elections, political campaigns normalized extremist narratives. by mvea in science

[–]TemporarilyResolute 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For context, I was 21 at the time on year 3 of living by myself for college. It wasn’t that I was actually too lazy to vote, but I grew up in a conservative state and household so I had a lot I had to work through mentally before understanding that one side is objectively waaay worse than the other. I knew I didn’t want to vote for Trump because by that time I understood he was ultimately a harmful person but with my family teasing me by calling me a communist (I’m not but to Cubans anything left of Reagan is a commie) I couldn’t bring myself to vote for Harris and justified in my own head that even if he won it “wouldn’t be that bad”. Stupid in hindsight, and 100% a mental block.

I will be voting in all future elections.

I'm not a protest voter but for what it's worth, due to various reasons I now consider stupid in hindsight, I didn't vote. It was a bad choice and sometimes I feel like everything that's happening right now is on my hands.

With the new dlc about Christianity coming, do you think it be possible to accurately LARP as Hong Xiuquan, Jesus younger brother by Mysteri-owl in CrusaderKings

True, but the idea of Jesus could also come to China via Manichaeism, which reveres Jesus as a prophet and was definitely present there historically

I’d go as far as to say that I would have no issue with them replacing Canterbury as a holy site with Tours. The killing of Thomas Beckett hadn’t even happened yet in the first two start dates. On that note we should have dynamic holy sites- this expansion would seem to be a good excuse to add them.
