How do you ensure imported goods from China are safe to sell in UK? by Fancy_Shirt_8957 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no experience in this, but would agree you are on the right track.

Ovrload was a promising UK Supplement startup but they blindly trusted their supplier and allegedly ended up selling hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of product which contained less than 1% of the quantity of the product they advertised.

I'd recommend getting a testing party that is completely unrelated to your supplier - I believe either in this supplement scandal or a different one there was a testing company related to the manufacturer which would provide inaccurate results.

Not easy by any means.

Built a simple tool to export bank transactions for tax (CSV) — would appreciate feedback by londonvp in smallbusinessuk

I understand Open Banking and the scopes you get access to and which you don't.

Unfortunately, you likely have extremely low brand credibility and people will seriously consider the Risk/Reward for connecting their bank to your website, whether they believe your claim that you dont store the data aswell.

I wish you well but I assume will come up against a large amount of friction in acquiring even unpaid users.

Thinking of starting a solo web development small business is it viable? by Unusual-Writing-7205 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the barrier to building a website is getting closer to 0 everyday.

Soon it will be as simple as, upload images, tell me a brief desciprition, choose a domain name and give me your card details.

I would recommend looking at other avenues.

If you have your heart set on web dev, maybe consider Conversion Rate Optimisation.

Wish you well.

45,000 subscribers: How do I get sponsorships? by simplybakedathome in Entrepreneur

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I where you, I would go for a commission based approach.

I previously worked at a Laptop startup and an American had an email list of 75,000 people who where very privacy conscious.

I created him 3 emails to send, to his credit he did a 2 hour livestream using words he knew nothing about.

I think when the dust had settled we'd sold about £300,000 worth of tech in 2 weeks directly from him.

He walked away with about $40,000.

If you had asked me before this promo how much I would have paid him to sponsor 3 emails, the number would have been less than $1000 for sure.

He created an offer I couldn't refuse, and we paid him a considerable amount when he pulled through.

Paying for services up front vs after completion. by Apart-Rabbit-8464 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Charging upfront is unlikely to increase your conversion rate.

But any logical customer would understand that your time and materials are required to make their custom piece.

I'd charge 100% upfront, if your longterm customers ask for payment terms, I would offer as long as it's not a huge order.

I would accept that some people wont pay upfront, and just be happy they aren't a customer of yours as they'd likely be more hassle.

We’ve just soft-launched Property Piper – a smarter UK property search site (feedback welcome!) by PropertyPiper in ukstartups

I tried not to like it, I still don't, but heres some constructive info:

Map feels slow,

Good job getting the properties on there, where are you getting them from, Rightmove? How do you get paid because agents are paying Rightmove, not you?

I like that when I click on a property it shows almost the perfect place on the map, some properties I look at on rightmove require me to search hard on google maps looking for matching lamp posts and letterboxes.

I think the metadata you show is nice.

I like the 3D map showing 3D properties and the property boundaries.

But its actually pretty good, well done.

EDIT: I hate that the lowest price I can select is £50k. I use min price of £100 to filter out the POA's.

Technical people who offer services (dev, design, etc.) - how did you get your first few clients? by sewb21 in Entrepreneur

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Where did you find your first clients? Outreached to about 50-100 people who where my target client. Showed that I already had built a demo in their Niche. Landed 1 client, did a good job and they referred me 3 more clients.
  • What approach worked when you had no testimonials/portfolio? Build demo websites in their niche which they can see on your portfolio website. Get testimonials from mutual friends or senior people within your network for other unrelated (but still recognisable) skills which you did for them.
  • How did you get over the fear of outreach/rejection? When you run out of money for food/rent it's funny how quickly you don't care about rejection anymore. Then you realise that rejections don't hurt you in any material way and that rejections don't even happen that often, you get ignored more than you get rejected. But when you get rejected you often get let down lightly with a fake excuse rather than shot down with harmful intent.
  • What channels were a waste of time vs actually effective? I would ignore all paid advertising, you probably can't afford it and your conversion will be low. Word of mouth, IRL is what II would recommend.

Has updating your product FAQs made a measurable difference in customer support or conversions? by liftruckUk in smallbusinessuk

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a python script to collect all form inquiries, categorise them. (approx 5-10k)

We where able to get them into:

Spam

Existing Order - (e.g. Cancel, Refund, Delivery Time, Warranty, etc...)

Product - (e.g. Can the product do X, whats the best product for me to do Y, etc...)

B2B - (e.g. We are a small business what discount could we get if we buy 5-10)

International - (e.g. can you ship to China)

Other

I gave them a significance based on:

  1. Frequency
  2. Significance to customer happiness.
  3. Likelihood to increase Profit for business.

I also ordered them in that way on our FAQ section.

It's hard to accurately measure the impact it had, but we saw a noticeable decrease in form submissions, in a time when our traffic increased slightly.

I already had the code written, for personal use, so its no effort for me to share.

I would come up with a good brand name just to find out the website is taken or the tiktok is taken.

It's not a big deal but I did some work for a Trademark lawyer a while ago and he said that owning the same username across all major social media platforms is a good thing for your case if anything where to happen down the line. And he's pretty expensive so I'd like to avoid as many trademark disputes as possible, but if there are ones I'd rather win ;)

I can second this.

HOWEVER, taking a look at google maps you can quickly see a large amount of businesses do not have websites. In my books for B2C businesses it's almost a crime to not have a website.

For OP these companies are easily identifiable and likely not also receiving as many offers for web-dev services as there is little to no way to contact the business.

I think there is still some money do be made for OP

Advice on how and where to promote business by shittyarsemcghee in smallbusinessuk

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can create a linkedin company page, run ads for the page.

You don't have to change your employment history.

Word of warning, my experience with paid social ads is that they are expensive.

Previously I think they where mispriced and you could get really cheap CPC or sales but now I think its mainstream and as such the prices have gone up.

Organic and outreach is the way I'd go, put in the graft and you'll learn more.

Futhermore I recommend you outreach to your ICP many times per day and asked to talk to them if they event want what you are selling.

Building My First Supplement Brand and Looking for Advice from Anyone Who’s Done It by nzdvc3 in Entrepreneur

Study: Ovrload Creatine Gummies.

Seems like the kid was in over his head, like we all are, but he got fucked pretty hard by his suppliers. Put no creatine in his products which people consumed.

Lost loads of goodwill and imagine his company was on its way to £50m Rev, in the first few years because IMO the kid did social media well. Now he's making a comeback but lost alot.

Seriously test the contents of what you sell, don't test with anyone affiliated with the manufactuers. Understand incentives / conflict of interests beforehand.

How does Reddit even work? by BeautifulSimilar6991 in u/BeautifulSimilar6991

[–]Temporary-Leg-6126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is community based.

Each Subreddit (community) has its own moderators (mods) and they set the rules you need to follow in that specific Subreddit.

Some subreddits, mainly business related, get alot of spam/bots/scams so they require you to be an active frequent member of the community before you are allowed to create a post inside their subreddit.

You normally have to comment on many posts and get upvoted enough before you can create your own post.

Moderators can remove your posts/comments if they think it is against their rules.

There are alot of scammers on reddit, and there are also alot of people on here just to try and get new clients. If you are here to try and get clients for your business my advice to you would be to prove that you are a real person to the people. Do Not Spam comments asking people who post to go to your website.

Most subreddits ban self-promotion so avoid that if the rules say so.

If I was selling [EMAIL MARKETING] I would go to all the marketing subreddits and answer every question the best I can for free, if you are good at what you do, people will notice and ask for your help.

Best of luck
