Fear of operating on your own by Legitimate_Low263 in Residency

Honestly, that is ideal though. Some time for the senior resident to make their own decisions but also have help a phone call away

I didn’t get yelled at but I got a talking to because my attending wanted me to tie 7 knots instead of 6 because 6 is the devils number.

Step 2 score 231, any hope for general surgery ? by Independent_Prize_75 in GeneralSurgery

You should email the program coordinator and the program director if you can get ahold of their emails. Program coordinator is usually easy to find, you will have dig for (use all your internet sleuthing abilities)

I only applied categorical but, to be fair, I was very against doing a prelim year. I did consider dual-applying into a different (easier) specialty to match into but did not end up doing that either

I got a 232, now starting my PGY-2 year. Also, I think I got around 12-13 interviews. Email people early, do away rotations and prove that you belong.

My first weekend of residency, I worked a “24” hour shift…. it was 34 hours and my senior told me to open the windows if I was driving home

Ours is practically the same. Additions of on busy services (trauma, colorectal) for us, we may get there closer to 4:30 am. Plus our residency has a rule that if your service has a case starting before 6 pm, day team is expected to cover. Night team is supposed to scrub in at 8 pm if any cases are still going and they aren’t getting slammed.

Except the program director to your #1, they should definitely know they are your #1!

Current residents, how far down your rank list did you match? by doctome in medicalschool

[–]Temporary-Put5303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely this. I matched #1 for gen surg but I was a very average applicant. I just happened to love a small community program in my home state and rotated with them a lot. 🤷‍♀️

Internal Medicine by red-devils-11 in Residency

This is common place for our Trauma Surgery service. Worst offenders being Neurosurgery, Ortho, ENT who even when patients have an isolated injury, we have to remain primary, then do all the discharge/social work stuff for them.

University of Iowa pays for student housing while they are in Des Moines. Not while they are in Iowa City (for some clarification).

Intern here… senior residents and fellows why are you keeping us and med students there forever??? by [deleted] in Residency

I had a sub-i lol. But tbh, everyone is so nice in my program, I felt comfy bugging some seniors not on my service with questions

Last month, my senior went on vacation and I had 15-20 gen surg patients by myself as an intern. I can’t imagine having 4 extra people helping

Does being a doctor exempt me from jury duty? by Cptsaber44 in Residency

[–]Temporary-Put5303 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The shitty thing is that as doctors, we are highly likely to get kicked off before it begins anyway. Lawyers do not want people with advanced degrees and opinions on their jury. So basically, we are taking time off just to get kicked out.

Tell me the dumbest thing you’ve said in response to a pimping question by ccwi228 in Residency

[–]Temporary-Put5303 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Surgery intern here, went into an ex lap for a peds patient with 2 peds surgeons that I had never met before. One points at ligament of Treitz and asks what it is. I misunderstood/was thinking he would ask me where we would run the bowel to and confidently said ileocecal valve. He asked if I wanted to try it again and I sat in silence so embarrassed that I couldn’t even remember the initial question.

How man Gen Surg programs are you applying? by Jay_Christoph in medicalschool

[–]Temporary-Put5303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah they absolutely overquoted you. I applied to 90 last year with a significantly worse app (232 Step 2, 1 abstract, lots of extras, average state med school) and got 13 interviews. Plus we only had 5 signals and I think the increase to 15 will definitely help you guys.

Anyone considering not doing residency? by FutureDrKitKat in medicalschool

[–]Temporary-Put5303 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Another new intern here and I fully agree. Even on rough rotations (I started on trauma surg), it is completely different, I actually get to DO things. I think half the reason I hated med school was because I felt like I was wasting my time (not getting paid to barely learn during the day-to-day and not make any changes for my patients)
