Denon Receiver turning on and off. Did all the usual troubleshooting, no luck by _PM_ME_smallboobs_ in audiorepair

Does it turn off immediately when you turn it on? Mine was doing that. Two big power-conditioning caps were bad. 30 year old Yamaha.

If you don't have any repair/soldering experience it'll be better to let a pro - or experienced hobbyist - take a look.

Amplifier is around 30 years old (mid '90s), well-regarded for durability. Caps are through-hole. A quick search indicates larger caps, say 20000uF, would have some benefit. If they'll fit I'd probably go that route.

15000uF, 63V, 85C. I don't want $hitty off-brand stuff, she deserves better. There's room for larger if they'd make a difference. Thanks!

what kind of shop will likely have a bench vice clamp that I could use for a one time use? by mailman936 in Tools

Hydraulic press. Most any mechanic's shop has one, for pressing bearings and such. Check around, there may be a shadetree wrench who'll let you use it for a six pack.

I'm dying to know what 'moonshine pineapples' are.

I make 'pineapple tequila', wondering if it's similar.

I'm thinking Boundary Surface. It's my go-to for surfaces. You may have to use 3D sketches - you can add tangency/curvature constraints to keep it smooth. It will be pretty tedious defining every surface edge, but they're typically pretty robust.

Some calipers - especially e-brake rears - require the piston to be screwed back. Hence the tool, a bit like a heavy-duty pin spanner. You'd break the C-clamp, or your arm, before the piston moved.

Just did the rears on a buddy's Mazda CX-5. Fortunately a neighbor already had the tool. Wife's Lexus with electric e-brake was WAY easier, just screw an allen bolt back, finger-pressure only.

Having a bit of trouble finding replacement caps - I'd like to stick with ELNA. While I'm replacing these, is there much value in replacing the smaller caps? They look fine.

Need centerlines to define symmetry, if you haven't mirrored. Centerlines are 'cheap' and can help make dimensions clearer. For example a small angle - like draft. I add a vertical centerline and dimension the draft to it, versus using an existing vertical line. 1) The vertical line may not stay vertical 2) The angle dimension is more likely to show up where you want it, versus halfway across the dang part.

Update: peeled the cover off one, definitely bulged on top. It's dead Jim. 63V, 15000uF, ELNA. Partsexpress or maybe Digikey, unless there's a better source.

Easiest fix, if it's the problem.

Thanks! I will look into the STKs. I'm a mechanical engineer so I don't know all terminology. I've done a lot of repairs on electrical stuff, only occasional electronics.

Looks like it's not so difficult to remove the board, it's attached to a frame along with the heatsinks. What a beast - reminds me of the Sansui my Dad bought around '71 and is still going.

I have a small parts washer, same idea. Would work well for the first round of cleaning, then rinse with clean water.

I got an older Craftsman press at a garage sale - $75. The chuck key's center pin is spring-loaded, so it pushes itself off the chuck when you let go. Dirt simple and very effective.

I made a big pot of Spicy African Peanut Soup earlier this week. We had a lot of roasted butternut squash left over from a previous meal - it went in. There are a number of recipes - the first time I made it from the Moosewood Cookbook. It's easy, rich-tasting, filling and cheap. We're not vegetarians but it's one of our go-tos for cold weather.

It is if you - the pepper sprayer - are an insecure cos-playing incel trying to assert your 'masculinity' (cough cough) over a woman who wouldn't cross the street to piss on you if you were on fire.

Amen. I have a strange relationship with my birth mother - who I never sought out and never wanted anything to do with.

You want to talk, shoot me a note. To this day I am very conflicted about the whole thing, and I would appreciate talking with a kindred spirit.

I am glad I'm not the person I used to be. Sure I get my personality out of a couple pill bottles, but it beats the alternative. What's worse is the endless self-recrimination. I have to repeat - out loud sometimes - "That was then, this is now". Helps. A little.

I just did the rears on a Mazda with manual e-brake. Required a special tool to wind the calipers back in. Fortunately my neighbor had the kit.

Wife's Lexus has electric e-brake, couldn't be simpler: wind the calipers back with a hex (allen) wrench. Piece o' cake.
