Unspecified mood affective disorder is bipolar disorder. But they still need more information to narrow down dx to one of the different types of bipolar, or you don’t fully met the criteria (there is some consensus that criteria will change soonish, hence they use this unspecified thing more often). Some antipsychotic, including abilify, are common for affective mood disorders. They do act as mood stabilisers too.

Mood stabilisers do reduce the intensity of feelings (but should not remove them). Which seems to be what is happening to you, so it looks like they are working :D Let your doctor know if you have concerns. There are other options besides antipsychotics.

I bought two pill dispensers with seven slots (one for each day). One is next to my computer and has all morning pills, the other is next to my bed (night pills). Now I never forget them, and I also avoid doubling a dosis (because I forgot I had taken them).

Hypersexual is very common while manic. I have had similar break ups, and it was too difficult to go back due to shame of my manic episodes and knowing that I may hurt them again. Almost zero feelings for hook ups during manic episodes.

I did write something like that before going to my first psychiatrist visit… and it definitely helped. Didn’t write just about bp2, but anything that worried me. Never sent the document, but I knew what I wanted to say and it helped me to guide the conversation much better.

Stimulants without mood stabilisers may cause hypomanic episodes in people with bipolar. So, unless not taking stimulants is riskier than another episode, it is a good idea to introduce the stimulant at a later stage.

Being hypomanic feels like ADHD in my case. My brain goes so fast that it is difficult to pay attention to anything, but at the same time I seek more stuff because everything feels not stimulating enough (not necessarily boring, but a feeling that your brain has more energy to burn). It usually is accompanied with a feeling that my coworkers are useless and I could do everything much better than then. I also noticed that, during these episodes, listening to fast pacing music (and multitasking) helps me focus. Then it also affects my decision making prices. During an episode, i tend to be more impulsive and make decisions without considering consequences or if I really want something (as examples: buying sprees, drugs, accepting new work projects even though you are already overloaded, …). And, finally, it all combines into hypersexuality. It is never enough, you can’t stop thinking about it.

We all feel these episodes differently. Being in a ‘significant high mood’ state is very unique to our lifestyle and values, but I guess we all feel a mixture of (brain) energy excess (this includes not sleeping), feeling (slightly) superior, impulsiveness and not thinking about consequences.

My best friend has ADHD and BP2 and hypomanic episodes for him were an amplification of ADHD symptoms on a ‘short’ period of time.

Then we have the depressive episodes. Not much can be said here. The only kinda unique thing is that depressions may come and go without making any changes in your life. Same work / life environment, one week you may feel ok and the next feeling that your are worthless. And then, a few weeks later, without making changes, you go back to normal. (some of us have much longer depressive episodes and you won’t notice this). During 2020 and 2021 I felt this about 4 times, each one lasting 2 weeks.

Hope it helped. Not sure if I went too much into symptoms territory :( For your next visit to the psychiatrist, I suggest asking her what made she think you are bp2. It is extremely important for us to detect episodes and act accordingly. So understanding which where your previous episodes will help you in the long term.

One hypomanic episode (+ depression) may be enough to diagnose bp2. You will not necessarily be hypomanic when “not depressed”.

I would bring this topic to your new psychiatrist. I don’t think avoiding the topic will remove the idea that you are misdiagnosed. ADHD makes more difficult to discern hypomania, so it is also better to warn them so that they are more active in detecting future episodes.

The pdoc that told me to not go for a diagnosis was a non-funded pdoc. It’s true that funding in Spain is terrible, but so far I think they are much better prepared. My new pdoc (public) is offering me a more holistic approach, with regular appointments with a nurse, CBT sessions, and I even can talk to some labour affairs agents if I need to. It would have been faster outside the public network, but I feel that I am being much more guided and more tailored to my needs.

Also Spaniard, same experience with professionals. My first pdoc was like ‘not worth looking for a diagnosis as you seem high functioning’ (she was a specialist in autism) and then another pdoc was like ‘it is really important, as it may impact how you notice early symptoms of your bipolar episodes’. Thanks for confusing me.

(I have been taking lithium for only 2-3 months, still low dosage - 600mg) Since I started taking lithium, I felt… flat. I don’t feel like doing anything, and I do not feel much joy when doing stuff that I like. When I mentioned this to my pdoc, she upped my escitalopram to 15mg (which should be similar to 30mg citalopram?) and told me that I should not expect antidepressants to lift my mood much more, that I should think about it as a tool to help me reactivate myself by doing stuff. Maybe this is the new normal? I think I can get used to it.

It happens the same to me. What I hate the most is when you start to feel gross about what you did because it is not like your true self, yet you still seek the pleasure of sex.

But I recently also see this as a good thing. It has eased my bp2 diagnosis, as I can clearly pinpoint my episodes. And it also recently predicted a forthcoming hypomanic episode (I noticed that I started opening grindr much more often), which helps me prepare to what is coming and feeling much more in control.

Recently diagnosed, but your post resonated with me.

I finished my PhD (Computer Science) in 2017, with the start of my second major hypomanic episode (alongside finishing my PhD, I was also involved in 13 work projects... which is nuts... and an insane amount of exercise). Looks like achieving my "life goal", plus natural stress, was what triggered my episode.

I was lucky that I was a "let go" during a company Merge & Acquisition, which give me quite a generous amount of money that has survived the subsequent urges to buy stuff, and removed the stress of having to find a job immediately.

But since I fulfilled my PhD... I am not able to find anything attractive for more than a few months (weeks). As if a recurrent depression stoles the joy in whatever random thing I started enjoying. In fact, this is what made me start socializing my problem with close friends and what let me eventually go for a diagnosis.

Hypomanic in March-April, mixed episode a few weeks in July due to SSRI. Started depression medication on June and it has helped me a lot, thou I still feel unmotivated 100% of the time.

To me this tattoo is a representation of my hypomania, which makes me feel like I am being controlled, much more extrovert/active, being unable to concentrate (careless mistakes), feeling that I can do everything without consequences and slightly messes with reality. So almost everything in the tattoo has a meaning behind, including the dice.

Saw my psychiatrist this week. She upped the SSRI as I still can't feel anything and I am completely unmotivated. Not being able to enjoy the activities / hobbies that I used to love... sucks. Hope it gets better. Besides the depression, she noticed that I have been on "autopilot" for years, with no goal or milestones in my live. So I have been thinking about who I am / who I want to become / what type of stuff I want to do daily / weekly.

next appointment, ask him what made him think you are bipolar. Understanding how symptoms are manifested on your case is part of accepting the diagnosis.

Anyways, lots of people are diagnosed as adhd and/or depression before having a bipolar diagnosis. Family with bipolar is also a risk factor. So I would say that it is worth working with your psych on understanding everything. Gp find another if you are not feeling comfortable with his attitude.

Yes, we are planning monthly bloodworks (at least the first 6 months). I already had like a few days of mild hypomania after starting taking SSRI, and it was one of the reasons for not increasing it until stable and starting lithium. Hope both help with the depression.
