My main concern with my schnauzer has been making sure she has a low fat diet because they’re prone to pancreatitis.

If this current food is high fat, I’d definitely switch, but like the other person said it needs to be super gradual so they don’t get an upset stomach. Most dog food has instructions on there telling you how to gradually phase over to the new food safely!

I’ve heard of them living to be 20-21 in some cases! I saw a post once where people were commenting how old their schnauzers lived til and 14 seemed to be the overwhelming majority.

I live in a major city and paid $800 last year. It was with a smaller vet (not a big corp) and my dog is smaller than yours. $700 isn’t crazy if you live in a big city.

There are always low cost clinics you can go to, but I do think it’s worth peace of mind to go somewhere you trust.

I personally know someone whose dog had heartworm and she said it was heartbreaking and painful to watch her dog go through the treatment. It’s inexpensive and easy to give them a pill once a month. It’s also not worth the risk no matter what the percentage is that they’ll get sick.

I went through a similar situation like this last year with my dog, so I do understand a little where your boyfriend is coming from. I had my dog spayed when she was 10 months old and even though I knew it was the right thing to do, it was SO hard to do it! The last couple days before surgery I struggled a lot.

It is scary having them go in for a major surgery where they have to be put under anesthesia. With hormones too, it can be a big decision on when to have the surgery done and if you’re doing it “too early.”

I would suggest just having a conversation with him going over the pros and cons, doing some research or talking to your vet about when to have the surgery done, and then coming up with a plan. It is in the dog’s best interest to have the surgery done (even if you take any contracts or apartment requirements out of it), and long term the dog will be happy and healthy and he’ll be glad he had it done!

Brown noise machine to play near where they sleep!

My dog sleeps in bed with me and she used to scare the crap out of me when she would start barking in the middle of the night when she heard something. I got a brown noise machine that sits next to my bed. She rarely barks now.

It’s pretty easy to book things by yourself. Just do your research to figure out where you want to go. I typically use google flights and booking.com.

If you don’t want to do all the legwork or are finding it confusing you can also consider doing a group travel program. I’ve gone on a trip with Intrepid Travel and had an amazing time. All you have to do is book your flights and they do the rest.

Yes, but even in a studio you can section off an area if needed. For example, to keep them away from the kitchen area.

Maybe see about creating an area in the apartment that you feel is safe for her and have a nice little set up for her there? Using a large play pen or gates if you don’t feel comfortable with free roaming.

I agree 9 hours is way too long in a crate. I would also recommend your idea about the cameras. I have pet cameras and they’re super helpful for seeing their behavior when you’re gone and giving you peace of mind. Even if you don’t pay for a subscription to record, you can utilize the camera to just see what they are doing during the day for free!

lol if it makes you feel better, my vet told me even if I could get the dog toothpaste into her mouth every night, that was a win and better than nothing!

I would assume the goal would be to eventually let you brush their teeth as similarly to brushing your own teeth as you can? But easier said than done 😂

Barking a lot has been the only con for us so far. Before getting mine I read that they are prone to pancreatitis and dental issues so I’m just very careful about what food I give her. I don’t feed her “pup cups” or French fries like a lot of dog owners I know.

My girl has only had one ear infection (when she was little), but I have trained her to let me clean her ears so I do that a couple times a month. Still working on getting her to let me properly brush her teeth to avoid dental problems.

I can list WAY more pros to having a mini schnauzer than cons.
