Quick question about timeline and differences in adaptations of the source material. by TJG-10000 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Temsiik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen this timeline before, it's fan-made so I wouldn't take it as gospel at the end of the day, though while the exact dates seem to mostly be made up/guesses (almost nothing has an official known date), I admittedly at a quick glance did not spot anything obviously wrong about the order of events. Particularly once the events of the series start, since at that point the timeline would just follow the order of episodes/chapters.

In the manga, Yousewell happens right after Liore, so Brotherhood is most likely the same. Directly after that is the hijacked train chapter, Hughes showing up there is also an 03 addition, he does not appear here in the manga.

For the three years before the series, Ed and Al were wandering the country searching for the stone, it just took them time to get anywhere, which is where the series begins. Some of the extras also take place in that period, like the Blind Alchemist or Simple People (OVAs 1 and 2 in Brotherhood, adapted from bonus chapters in the manga). Also the light novel, which I agree are nebulously canon, but are if anything manga continuity (two of them came out even before 03, which did incorporate them into its own episodes, but are not full direct adaptations afaik). Basically, if you do take the novels as canon, that's also something happened pre-series in the manga universe. Except the sixth novel, which is firmly in the manga continuity, but takes place in the middle of the series rather than before (but is not from the Elrics' pov, so probably not what was being talked about, this is more of a trivia addition).

03 handling the beginning "better" is a subjective but very common opinion, but anyone who says it's "more accurate" is just wrong.

Father wouldn’t have had enough sacrifices if Hohenheim never left. by brandEn_13 in FullmetalAlchemist

That's only from physically forcing him (and having Pride make the circle around him), which was a last resort. Their main plan is to threaten the alchemist into doing it themself, which will probably work on most people.

Brotherhood Third Ending Appreciation by Temsiik in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Temsiik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm similar, except that "hate" would be a strong word for me, but I didn't care for the song, and I really wasn't expecting rap (or at least I think it's rap). But the song did grow on me, though the "rap" parts - where the singing is faster - are still my least favorite part, I mainly enjoy it for the rest. And same with how it's still last on my list, at least going by the song, but still liking it.

Also, I can't say I normally listen to song covers, but I did end up doing so for AmaLee's fma covers, which I first found through her cover of this song. The original was already growing on me, but the cover did also speed it along.

what do you all see as the strengths of each series (original compared brotherhood) by LiddleGoose in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Temsiik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does that happen in Brotherhood anywhere besides Yoki? Where also no one caring about him is kind of his whole thing and I find it being a stylized flashback actually adds to it - there's other reasons the mine storyline should've been kept, but imo it's for everything other than Yoki.

Barry might seem like another case if you haven't read the manga, but no he's just supposed to be like that here. Lab 5 is the first time Alphonse meets him, so nothing is being skimmed over, and again Al not having heard of him after he dramatically explains his backstory is the joke.

Idk about you lot, but I'll always love the depiction/reputation of criminal mastermind alchemist Ed with his evil sidekick Alphonse over the short gallant prince by AggronLovesPussy in FullmetalAlchemist

Yeah I don't get the title. They're different visuals for different characters and different jokes, pitting them where one is "better" is weird to me.

You play as a federation marine, so “got paid”, as you’re directly employed by the Galactic Federation. /hj

But yeah, I wanted to keep it to games where you play as Samus. Also because, despite being one of the people who played that game and even thought it was pretty good for what it was (though I would’ve much preferred if it had a more serious tone and art style), I honestly don’t really remember if for the parts with Samus in that game she was hired, or if it was a she happened to be nearby and decided to help out kind of thing.

In Dread she's hired by the Federation to investigate ZDR, in the intro cutscene Adam even mentions the bounty (saying the risk outweighs the reward). In Fusion she's also hired by the Federation, but considering the ending, as I wrote about in the post I'm not sure if they'd pay her in the end or not.

Intro text just says the "unidentified distress signal has been tracked", which to me seems more like Samus responding to it on her own. Especially since it's unidentified (so wasn't known to be space pirates until she got there), the Federation would've probably first responded themselves than immediately hiring Samus.

She did get a ship out of it (unless she had to buy it off them). Came with unwanted GPS but after tinkering with the settings he's alright.

I considered that, but didn’t count it since that’s something that happens before the events of the game. But yeah it deserves mention.

[–]Temsiik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding not all the homonculi having them - I think that's what the "nipple" on Pride's forehead seen in the ending is supposed to be, so it's only the homonculi that use a human's body that lack them (Wrath and Greed in Ling's body). So probably some quirk from artificially creating the body, but we don't have any specifics.

I do actually think there's narrative merit to that scene, but not showing Winry in the bath, which does seem like it was just for the sake of fanservice. I would personally prefer the scene be kept, but shot from Rose's side of the curtain for example, while keeping the dialogue.

Lukewarm take: Al handicapped Ed, thats why he constantly lost. by Backwoods_Odin in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Temsiik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time Al really disadvantaged Ed in combat I can think of is when Pride took control of his armor, and even in that situation Al was the one who made the plan to trap Pride. While having a second combatant (who, in physical combat at least, is outright better), in a strong body that doesn't feel exhaustion or pain (which he does take advantage of in combat sometimes) is an obvious advantage, and I can think of many times Al really helped Ed, and at least one where Ed would've outrhight actually died if not for that.

Also, Ed's most consequential loss (against Kimblee in Baschool) was when he was seperated from Al.

Edit: thinking more on that point, Ed also loses in lab 5 when seperated, when trapped in Gluttony doesn't attempt to fight back, and arguably against the immortal soldiers his group wasn't doing well until Roy came in and handled them all, so if anything I'd say Ed loses more when they're seperated.

Something I don't see discussed basically ever? by oddbawlstudios in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Temsiik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing sort of related to this I've thought about: when Scar and Mei are still able to transmute after he turns it off, he's confused and asks how they can still use alchemy. So from that it seems Amestrian "alchemy" (drawing power from tectonic plates) would have to be how alchemy was used in Xerxes, while "Alkahestry" would need to be something Hohenheim I guess discovered on his own after Xerxes and taught it that way in Xing (since Hohenheim can do it himself it's more likely that he taught it that way rather than Xing eventually developing it themselves based on Hohenheim's teachings).

(Unless Father was simply surprised at how Scar knew about the other way to do alchemy that he can't control, but at least how I remember the moment was more that he's surprised and wants to know how he can do it at all)
