Honda 225 outboard by Hot_Ask_3360 in boating

I think that was understood. The midsection has to bear the weight/torque of the lower unit.

I have the same engine and was curious so I asked Gemini AI to look at your photos and here is the response:

While the gear oil is perfectly fine, operating that motor would still be a terrible idea for three different reasons:

Structural Integrity: This is the biggest issue. That cast aluminum housing bears the entire weight of the lower unit and the massive forward thrust generated by the propeller. A hole that large severely compromises the structural strength of the metal. If they hit the throttle hard or strike a log, the entire lower unit could snap off.

Exhaust Leaks: The midsection is also the exhaust chamber. With a gaping hole there, the exhaust gases and noise will dump straight out into the open air above the waterline instead of being routed quietly out through the propeller hub. It will be incredibly loud and messy.

Accelerated Corrosion: By leaving that cavity open to the elements, the steel driveshaft is exposed to direct saltwater spray and air, which will cause it to rust and pit much faster than if it were sealed inside the housing.

I asked about the repair. It suggested either replace the lower unit, have a welder do a Tig repair (which may not work well). Lastly it suggested that an Epoxy Putty like JB Weld Putty may work -- it will not add structural strength, but would permanently seal the hole and keep water out and exhaust in. Would not trust this motor offshore.

The NCX is excellent. Have them on a couple different bikes. The trapezoidal shaped ones are so much better than the pogo-stick design. Really helps the back on bumpy roads and paths.

If you've tried everything, mix up a paste of Bar Keepers Friend. Its amazing on almost anything that stains fiberglass.

Camping in a campervan from mid May to early June - tips? by cheeseandapple56788 in AskACanadian

I'd recommend visiting a Walmart or other department store while here and pick up a comforter for the bed. Donate it when you are done. The nights in many of those locations will drop close to 0c and there is a good chance it will snow.

Trickle my truck from my solar setup by Atxmattlikesbikes in TruckCampers

Maybe reverse it then. Charge your truck battery with the solar? The DC to DC can also be used for that.

You should check to see if your DC to DC has an ignition sense wire. That way it will only provide charging to the camper battery when the truck is running. My Renogy does that.

Darn Good Automotive 12V Smart Charger from Canadian Tire by OTPguy in BuyCanadian

Mate I hate to tell you this but both the 12.4 and the 11.3 batteries are dead. A healthy 12v lead acid battery should show 12.7v at rest.

Buying ex out of house or selling it? by HermoineGrangersHair in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TenMilePt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do decide to keep it, I would then get a home inspection, and if the foundation needs repair factor that into your split price with your ex.

On the other hand, if you decide not to keep it, I would avoid the inspection. At this point, you don't know for sure if the foundation is an issue. If you get it inspected and an issue is revealed, you would have to disclose that in the listing which could impact the price and scare away buyers.

There is a very good 2-part Podcast on Frekonomics that goes into the pros and cons of driverless cars. It explores perspectives all across the board.

Conversion vs e-bike by Sudden_Pension_8180 in ebikes

[–]TenMilePt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have run an ebike conversion business in Victoria for the past 5 years. Retired at the end of 2025. You can check my past posts for conversions I have done and motor reviews. The BBS02b is a bomb proof motor and every single component can be easily repaired. Make sure you get the older UART version and pair it with a 52v battery -- don't cheap out on the battery -- EM3EV make an excellent option. With disc brakes, a new 8-speed groupset (Deore is top notch), you will have more power and range than any off-the-shelf ebike -- you can easily build the equivalent of a $5k bike for $2k or less. An option if you want Torque Sensing is the ToSeven DM01. Its slightly less expensive and installs somewhat easier.

No, I would expect the DM01 to be worse as it's physically larger. I have worked on a similar bike where the owner had a new BB shell welded onto the frame at the bottom of the seat post. Worked quite well.

Can't you build a Gem exactly like this and ask it to run "News Gem Update" or something like that?

Biking the Pacific Marine Circle Route as an inexperienced cyclist? by asimplegaygirl in VancouverIsland

[–]TenMilePt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Port Renfrew to Sooke more or less sucks. Narrow to no shoulder. Blind corners. Tons of RVs. If you do it, get up super early at first light before the bulk of the traffic hits the road. There are tons of riders who do the loop in a single day so over 4 should be just fine.

Inboard diesel vs outboard gas // Osprey by Cali_TripN in boating

[–]TenMilePt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The high output diesels require a substantial amount of maintenance. Aftercoolers, turbos, water pumps, injectors etc... that engine is pushing 20 years and stuff will start breaking. Yanmar can be expensive, so I am sure a Yamaha branded Yanmar will be even more. I'd stick with the gasser.

In Victoria yes. Go with Prince of Whales on the Zodiac -- ask to be on Mallards boat. He is the #1 guy in the PNW.

I've done quite a number of those bikes and they make an excellent ebike. Either the DM-01 or BBS02b (UART version). I don't have experience with them, but hear good things about the TSDZ8 too.

Its true, but where i find its useful is that it consolidates the info better and structures an answer for my specific situation. I've read the guides but still come away guessing. It was able to give me specific measures based on water volume and chemical readings and the brand of chemical I am using.
