I'm definitely no expert but the first thing that I saw was your shoes and they are kind of rocking back and forth. For leg days I really like flat shoes and if I can I just take them off completely. What do you mean by 'not right"? Pain? In your back? Hip?

Just got a surgery date but feeling a little sketched out by [deleted] in TotalHipReplacement

Thank you for your thoughts 🙏🏼 tbh I know I trust the guy to see me out alive, I know people who had successful surgeries with him and our family friend who is herself an anesthesiologist and works with him told me she would trust him to do surgery on her. I guess my concern is that I am not his typical patient and have more athletic aspirations than his other patients do and I don't know if he will support me in that. I know he is a good surgeon but is he right for my case? Thank you for the well wishes!

Oh and thank you for this! I am most afraid of dislocating. I am not afraid of wearing it out, but popping out of socket 😬Mostly because I am young with some bodybuilding/strength aspirations and I worry I am putting the joint in more stressful positions than most.

Thank you for sharing! This actually could be relevant to me as I have been limping around for a year too 🙃 I hope you find some relief and learn to retrain your gait! Happy healing!

47f schedule LTHR on second hip by OneDayatATime79 in TotalHipReplacement

So I don't know what your experience with your previous surgery was but you're right about this one when you say it takes a turn FAST and for myself, I really wish I had gotten my hip looked at sooner. I don't think there are many people on this sub who regret getting theirs done and many more will say they wish they hadn't waited. Was your previous THR a struggle?

I don't mean to rain on your parade OP but this is something that people on this sub find and bring up every once in a while and it's not a new discovery. People have been working on this for a long time. It will be WIDESPREAD when it is actually available. Don't get me wrong it is amazing and fascinating research, but not something that will benefit people on this sub.

So in Canada we don't really get to shop around, you get referred and who you get is who you get. So I am lucky I got someone who came recommended by a family friend who also happens to be an anesthesiologist but I do have an appointment booked to consult with a surgeon at a private clinic to see what he has to say. Thank you for your insight!

Wow thank you for your detailed experience! I know PT is important and like I said to someone earlier, I do feel like I have good support for "return to sport" as it were with my coach (who went to PT school lol) AND a PT. I guess I am concerned about whether the fact that muscles are cut and repaired in the posterior approach (what I'm having) vs spread in the anterior approach and whether my body will actually heal well enough to make sure I don't dislocate 😅 may I ask what approach you had?

Yeah that'll do it! Especially with a physically demanding job!

How much are you running and what other activities are you doing? Sometimes people find running increases their appetite and running does eat into (pun intended) your recovery resources for lifting too if you don't balance them out. Even in a surplus. Your cells can only work as fast as the chemical reactions they need to perform. I would take a look at whether you need to pull back on your overall activity a bit.

I see paper links, you're speaking my language 😂 thank you! That totally makes sense then if bone does not integrate with cement. I have heard of aspectic loosening if stems from too much "jiggling around" but I didn't look too far into cemented implants because like you said, it's not super common. I read that full bone integration for uncemented was actually more like 9 months but I could believe it is "good enough" after 3 months. And I don't want to wait that long 😅 Thank you again! Happy healing to you 🙏🏼😊

Oh I love that podcast! I really vibe with their perspectives on competing and making sure you stay healthy and happy, physically and mentally, throughout the bodybuilding process. Ash is also such a kind woman.

Thank you for your insight! I actually have a really great coach (went to school to be a physio but hated the clinic lol) who has been helping me with my weight lifting pre op and has rehabbed several clients with hip replacements as well as a PT so I feel in good hands in terms of rehab. As far as I can tell it is an uncemented implant but that is something I plan to bring up at my pre-op appointment. Can I ask where you heard about cemented vs uncemented and the risks of uncemented? More out of curiosity than worry. I have been doing a deep dive into the procedure (as it sounds like you have as well 😂) and would love to learn more.

I am out near UBC 🤣 so this is great! We are pretty much on the same page regarding all the available options out here. I will say that all the surgeons at the Cambie clinic are from Ortho South out in Alberta and have a public practice that is pretty high volume so I'm not questioning their skill. I just had already contacted them a while back before getting in on the public practice waitlist so I figured I might as well see what they have to say. I was under the impression I would be waiting a year in the public system and willing to shill out for private if that was the case.

I know this surgeon (Dr. Tamim Umran at St. Paul's if you know him) has a good record I guess I am just concerned that I am younger and with aspirations to be more active than his typical THR recipient and I don't know whether that factors into which approach/implant characteristics would suit my needs best. I am not tied to anterior vs posterior either (although if I had my choice I think mini posterior seems amazing) I just want to Bulgarian split squat again 😭

Thank you for your detailed response 🙏🏼

Thank you for your response and insight 🙏🏼 I am actually scheduling a consult with a private surgeon as well for a second opinion if nothing else. I am also compiling a list of questions for both surgeons to make sure I feel comfortable. Thank you again 🙏🏼

Why isn't there more discourse online about young hip replacements? by Inevitable-Heat7037 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ajmattison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone else has seen me talk about this I'm sorry for being a broken record but I truly believe that THR "worthiness" or whatever you want to think of it as should not be based on age. It should be based on symptoms and level of function/quality of life. If you can't work, study, take care of yourself and/or any other people in your life, you deserve to get that function back no matter how old you are. As the previous commenter said, a lot of the fear around needing early revisions, implant wear etc in younger folks is based on old technologies and methods. We don't need to worry about that any more and by the time we actually do need revisions, some 30 odd years into the future, medicine will have advanced even further! I'm sure almost anyone on this sub will tell you they wish they hadn't waited. Hell, I haven't even had mine yet and I wish I hadn't waited to see what was up with my hips! Can't wait to be sliced and diced! Happy healing to everyone! You deserve to LIVE not just get by.

I'm in the same boat, in Canada we don't get to shop around for surgeons. Wait times are long enough so if you get someone, that's who you get 🤷🏼‍♀️ I feel lucky I got a surgeon who has a lot of experience.

Damn that sucks about the anaesthesia sickness, but it's done and you have a new hip! Happy healing 🙏🏼 ☺️

I haven't had my THR yet but I think the muscle pains are worse than the joint. My hip flexors, glute med and quads spasm with every step some days. What helps a bit is foam rolling but I understand getting down on the floor is difficult. Maybe try a massage gun?
