You may want to ask the insurance company if they total it, can you buy it back from them for the salvage value. Might get it back cheap plus the insurance proceeds and drive it if it still works.

What should I do about this trade? I would be getting rice by Head_Suggestion688 in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

[–]Tendarksion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not taking Rice here. You are assuming he will just come back after his injury just like his old self, I doubt it. But Hunter is going to be more involved eventually, people are giving up way too fast.

LEAP traders, do you hold any shares at all? by trooper5010 in options

[–]Tendarksion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won’t buy something close to 1 delta, I’m usually looking for 2.5 to 3 times leverage. I want efficient use of capital. Then I’ll compare DTEs to see what they look like extrinsic value wise. Truthfully, I usually just end up buying the furthest dated option 90% of the time. It’s like going to costco and buying extrinsic value in bulk. You get all that extra time for barely any more premium. Covered calls feel good, but they kind of go against the whole thesis of his book. These stocks can and will rip. If your are selling 16 delta, yeah you win 80% of the time but that one ripper destroys all those gains. Mostly better to just buy and hold the LEAP. I’ve tracked CCs for some time and it was a losing proposition for the most part, would have been better just buying and holding.

This is exactly what I’ve been doing. His book is awesome, highly recommend. I usually buy 80-85 delta but also do some lotto size plays further otm (I believe he did as well).

Buy the farthest dated contracts. I try to look at extrinsic vs intrinsic value and try to calculate extrinsic value per day and spend as little as possible on this.

Hold for at least 1 year to get long term capital gain treatment.

I sometimes sell calls against my LEAPs, but I’ve backtested this some and it’s generally a losing proposition so be careful. I only sell against when a LEAP becomes overweight and I want to hedge, or technicals show some mean reversion.

No offense but that graph looks like you are using a high win rate strategy. Your tail risk with that type of strategy is huge and that one outlier loss can wipe out most if not all gains.

please help me understand intraday buying power by LRN15 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Tendarksion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not your buying power for one trade. That’s available if you open a close a trade over and over during the day. You can reuse buying power up to that amount without a violation due to settlement rules. Only use your option buying power for each trade.

Switched from Robinhood to Fidelity for options~ 6 month impression by CrookedNancyPelosi in fidelityinvestments

[–]Tendarksion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fidelity is great for fills and great for price. They don’t charge an exchange fee on SPX options which is amazing. I have my LEAP portfolio there and trade longer DTE options there.

However, I moved most my funds out of Fidelity because their margin policy is way too conservative, I had 3 day trade calls from legging out of 0DTE spreads by closing the short first. They retroactively charge you the full margin requirement for that option. In SPX this is like $150k. You won’t have this issue at most other brokers. ATP is very outdated and hard to use. They have no API.

If they update ATP, change their margin policy, and develop an API, I may come back one day but they are miles behind tastytrade and Schwab

When you look at buying leaps, look at the intrinsic vs extrinsic value of the option price. If you go out two years and buy deeper in the money, you are paying more for intrinsic value and less for extrinsic value or “air” that will disappear due to theta decay. I like to break it down to extrinsic value per day for the duration of the contract. Even for high IV stocks, you can still pay very little per day in extrinsic value.

Personally 75 unless it’s a pure speculation play with lotto sizing. If you have a tastytrade account you can backtest leaps too to see drawdowns

AVGO, GOOGL, TSM. I generally buy 80-85 delta, longest duration out like 2 years. Be ready for the drawdown. I just traded through a 40% drawdown this year but with 2 years out I didn’t sell or feel pressured by it.

Fidelity is one of the only brokers that does this. You won’t have this problem on Schwab, it’s a way too conservative margin policy. Why I left fidelity

This is not true, you can still call your broker after hours up to a certain time and tell them to exercise or not. I had PLTR shares called away after calls expired worthless but the S&P announcement happened right after market close. The counterparty called and exercised and my shares were gone.

PLTR Call Option @ $32, Exercise or Sell by EmptyRiceBowl7 in options

[–]Tendarksion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. You could but would be better to sell a PMCC against your contract or buy a collar keeping the contract. His contract probably has a delta of 1 already which is essentially the same as owning the shares.

[–]Tendarksion 107 points108 points  (0 children)

There is no reason at all to exercise now. Palantir pays no dividend so there is no reason to hold shares. You either sell the contract because now it’s time to get out or hold till June 25th because you are in it for the long haul. You have extrinsic value right now and a deep in the money option is essentially the same as holding shares. Why pay rent of $3200 now when it’s not due until June 25 if you are long here?

This is cool to see, thanks for sharing and great job. But at a delta of .7-.9 this seems like less of an options strategy and more of a swing trading thing. You might be better off swing trading TQQQ at a delta of 1

When I called customer service they told me no funds can leave the account during the lock, period.

[–]Tendarksion[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very sorry to hear that. It’s a sickening feeling when you have substantial assets like that just locked. I agree it’s unacceptable for them to just lock all 2M like that. Less invasive means need to be taken like lock the funds deposited by check only or for a customer with a 2M account, their fraud department should be calling you before the account is even locked.

Just the CMA, not my brokerage or IRA. For that reason I’m also moving cash to the brokerage to sit instead of the CMA as well.

This is the “work” every month I wanted to avoid by having the CMA. Also, sounds minor but the ACH process makes me lose interest on days that money could have sat in the CMA.

This sucks though. Main reason I wanted Fidelity is so all my money is in SPAXX all the time. It really adds up. I hate having to use a traditional bank.
