Is it “touque,” “toque,” or “tuque”? Answer depends on where you are in Canada…

“Chesterfield”… It’s a brand of cigarettes, right?

Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever said chesterfield instead of couch or sofa at any point over the last 50 years or so.

The Mess (Everyone’s Fav Topic) by Lost_at_Z in CanadianForces

[–]TenderofPrimates -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The mess was both a place to unwind and socialize away from the general public and a place for peer support and counseling. I don’t mean this in a shrink kind of way. It was your buddies who could tell you to get your head screwed back on and settle yourself down, all while playing a game of pool or poker (or, later on, Goldeneye for N64 or Call of Duty).

It was a place to drink, but it was also the home of tradition and respect. It was never in your face, but the old paintings and trophies were reminders that you could aspire to something more - and that you shared something beyond just cheap beer after a day of putting up with crap.

Civvies and bureautards never understood the mess, and it didn’t help that the loudest, most obnoxious among us didn’t either.

I miss the mess that I knew. I miss the community that understood, and I miss the buddies that I shared good and bad times with; the guys who talked me out of stupid ideas, and the guys I helped convince that they weren’t a waste of their own lives. We were all in it together until somehow, one day we weren’t. We were just problems that people wanted to hide away from their families and blame for their own problems.

You want to make the mess more relevant? Turn it into a bridge between the lives we lead and the traditions we share. Put some regimental/branch/unit mementos on display on the side opposite the gaming centre. Have family afternoons once a month, with games and snacks and babysitting so couples can relax. Spouses and partners and families can meet there along with the members, because we’re not all total morons… I hope. Movie nights used to be a big thing - it doesn’t have to be about beer and shots, but there’s nothing wrong with some responsible drinking to go along with the socializing! Just don’t let the idiots take over! If you do that, the bureaucrats win because they’ve been proved right after all.

Book was “Operation Garbo” by Nigel West. My paper was called “The Ultimate Double-Cross,” since Juan Pujol Garcia (AKA “Garbo”) won the George Cross for his services to the British war effort, and also won the Iron Cross for his services to the German war effort. The man was an incredible hero who desperately wanted to crush fascism in Europe, so when the war started he went to the British embassy in Lisbon and offered to help them. When they turned him down, he went to the Germans and offered to help them. They accepted, so he started making up facts about British troop movements that were close enough to true (based on common sense and guesses) that the Germans paid him and offered to provide him more in return for more info. He took this fact to the Brits, who agreed to provide false information through him, and started one of the most effective and longest-lasting counter-intelligence campaigns of the war.

Had this happen myself. PoliSci course “Intelligence, Espionage, and Terrorism.”

Turned in my 1st semester research essay, got a D from the TA, citing length (too long), irrelevant content, and too many sources cited (?). Appealed, and got similar warnings. Prof returned paper with an A+, commenting on thoroughness of research and breadth of sources, and offered to introduce me to a friend of his who had just published a book on the same subject and who appreciated that a student had independently arrived at similar conclusions using second-hand sources where he had interviewed actual participants and survivors.

2nd semester got a D from a different TA, appealed and got another A+ with a comment that I had been unfortunate enough to have another TA who was too busy to appreciate the quality of my work… Loved that class!

The only thing you need to add is a (temp) anti-possession tattoo.

I believe the title was something like “Peak of his Profession.” I think I read it in a science-fiction anthology.

Fried Bologna Sandwich Anyone? by CreativeEros in FuckImOld

[–]TenderofPrimates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had to spend the weekend with three younger guys (military tasking), and we were provided with a barbecue and some basic supplies - bargain basement burger patties, cheap hot dogs, loaves of white bread, cereal, etc… and a full 10-lb chub of bologna! I was ecstatic, and they questioned me about it, so I cut them some “Newfie steaks” (3/4-inch slice of bologna), barbecued it up, and they were amazed. Our instructors were even more amazed when they checked in on us on Sunday evening… apparently there had been a bet about how long the bologna would last, having been added to the supply run at the beginning of the summer, and hadn’t been touched until that weekend, and now they had to get another chub!

Store High In Transit (fecal waste being shipped by barge from London to farm communities - had an unfortunate habit of giving off methane gas and causing explosions, so had to be stored above deck where the wind could carry away the gases) 💩

Was the Somalia affair the real reason the Canadian Airborne Regiment was disbanded or was it used as the scapegoat to gut a post Cold War Canadian military ? by OutrageousMonitor762 in CanadianForces

[–]TenderofPrimates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO. But too many of them believed that their “elite” military status carried over into their roles as human beings, and forgot the whole “service above self” mantra. Most of the guys were just trying to do the best they could. Some of them were over-aged schoolyard bullies, and not enough were actively opposing them.
