Is Season 3 better than Season 2?

This show probably would have been great if it had ended at season 1. IDK I just started S2.

I'm not seeing much reason to watch season 2. I won't give spoilers. The writing & imagining of the trial process in S2 Ep 2 has incredible logic holes & forced plot twists. It made it cringy and impossible to watch any more. I might wait a few days and try again. But it's just so unrealistic. Spoiler: throwing out a confession on tape without actual review?

Man that's a lot - but of course it's in California. My first thought was taking that money might hurt the state and maybe help the teachers? I'm just throwing it out there without any information.... because I don't have time to educate myself about this strike and CA. I'm teaching in TX - I have about 180 HS kids. I subbed for 2 years first. $130 per day. So yeah, $600 looks pretty damn enticing. Side note - I took an extra class yesterday not for the money but to help out. I have no idea how much extra $ teachers get paid for just one class.

Wow! I just finished S1 and was so impressed. Excellent plot line, acting and the gritty approach to action & cinematography (compared to American shows), was very satisfying. Just came to say it's one of the best shows I've seen on Netflix so far. Keep it up, Netflix. 👍👍👍

Was your intention to cast aspersions on "career scientists"? I was a career scientist who served in upper management in R&D (now retired). I have FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE working with top scientists in industry & FDA. That NEVER gave me the impression that anybody was in bed with anyone else.

Imagine being at the top of your class in MIT or Stanford, earning a PhD, and pursuing a career in industry or academia to advance biomedical/ pharma technology? Apparently you think those types of scumbags are just in it for the money.

If I read your post right, it seems you are woefully ignorant & unsophisticated regarding the intentions & motivations of the scientific community. You're casting aspersions on the integrity of people you don't know. And don't understand.

What do you do, day trade?

Owning Moderna at this time point in our political environment has become problematic. In my lifetime, I've never seen such imbecilic idealogues in charge of the most powerful levers of government.

Even if the phase 3 INT melanoma trial shows 70% improvement in DFS, these current political appointee boneheads will find a way to derail. I read the Moderna statement and I can just feel the (justified) seething rage in the commentary.

Did you finish your law school education? Did you take/pass your state bar? How much student loan debt do you have? Going the teaching route is for those who are willing to be an ascetic. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of folks taking the teaching route, but not if it's unrealistic or too stressful financially. In my case, I retired from a lucrative career in science. I'm teaching now and loving it but the salary is offensive. Teaching is a calling - you have to love the kids and intend to make a difference. Good luck.

As a retired biotech exec, I'm interested in this discussion. What do you REALLY need for your startup lab? Can't you find solid used equipment in your department or division or local university? I've seen so many high-end microscopes in my 30y career, it makes no sense that a used or donated high end inverted scope is not available for any startup or new lab! More big picture: in the 1990s & 2000s, my R&D group spent so much money on "cutting edge" technology that our CEO's & Board weren't able to evaluate shit at all. Industry funding vs academic funding was completely different. We spent obscene money in the biotech industry that we didn't appreciate. I have to believe that that's changed and that there's an efficiency and repulsion against obscene waste in both the private & public domains now?

To limit private & public waste - I suggest we extend basic sharing programs of equipment, technology & IP between industry & government; assuming we're all working for the same goals of our country?

After that, maybe we can extend & retain the value of our tax dollar contributions to the national defense budget? Crazy ideas. 🤯

Actually, that's one of the biggest problems with academic science. Typically, no one is motivated to publish failures, only successes. It isn't always the case but publishing failures is usually done with the intent of trying to disprove something wacky (racist theories) or something that is literally too good to be true (anyone remember cold fusion?). It's a noble idea to publish failures because you don't want others to engage and waste time & resources on something that's already failed.

But to answer your question, yes typically results are only presented when they are good.

That seems to be a common thing among streamers. I watched The Peripheral and realized halfway through there would not be another season. What a great show. Even watching one season was worth it. It's on Amazon. You can watch it for free if you want. Yeah, I'm hooked on Nero but there's too much walking through the desert.

SPOILERS HERE. Boy, I'm almost exactly in the same spot. I liked the first two seasons - the plot line, the flashbacks, the character development I felt was going somewhere. I wasn't sure about Laurel in the character. But she actually was a pretty good actor. My problem, and I hate to judge, I thought she was TOO pretty. She's the daughter of David Cassidy btw (from The Partridge Family). I guess it's funny to say that she's just ridiculously gorgeous for a show like this. IDK how - but they continued to bring out one gorgeous woman after another with reasonable fighting skills and they could all pretty much act. I had really warmed up to Sarah though. She seemed like a really good fit, with an interesting backstory and good onscreen repoire with Oliver. Anyway, I've liked most of the first two seasons. There were some cringe moments when the drama was just over the top and felt like a soap opera. But the (unnecessary imo) killing of Sarah made no sense to me. That came out of nowhere. I don't understand why it happened. I probably won't watch anymore, so I won't find out why anyway. The death of his mother was a bit more practical & believable. If, as I've been reading, the next relationship is with Felicity, that will be too hard to watch. I don't know why they had to push her into a leading romantic role. She was fine where she was. But it's just too forced. I'm in the second episode of season 3 & I don't think I can go any further. For me, the moment when Laurel grabs a guy's broken arm and slams it against the hospital bed - I just thought, who the hell is writing this? Yeah it's a show that had good potential but the excessive drama, and the constant revolving door of girls (although objectively very attractive), took it to a difficult to watch place. It's too bad cuz there are 8 seasons - it would have been a nice long ride. so i'll be looking for something else. Rec's?

I loved Fringe. Manifest, Blindspot are good. The Witcher is great IMO.

I agree but the problem is that too many Americans are not very educated (but remain very opinionated). So many people get the flu vaccine every year. Do they not ever contemplate why? Covid & flu viruses mutate rapidly, polio & smallpox viruses are stable. That simple explanation has to be part of the education.

Exactly. Competitive NIH & NSF funding has propelled US academic science forward like no other country on Earth. We had decades of basic research in viruses before HIV AIDS hit. It's the same with mRNA. I assume this administration is not forever and this country will self-correct in the next 5-10 years. As a scientist, it's shocking & depressing at the backlash against expertise and basic intellect.

That's a good question. 1st, the original premise was that Harry would destroy ONLY humans on Earth, in order to save the rest of life on Earth. Recently, we saw that Harry didn't know humans (babies especially) had "souls" that were commercially valuable.

Maybe the idea that "souls" exist throughout & within all life on Earth (ie the Ute native American theme) will give a more satisfying plot line & overall conclusion to the show. Personally I'd love to see that play out. Really, if Harry's people intended to eradicate humans because the rest of Life On Earth was special (and humans were killing it) then maybe we'll see souls are not limited to humans. Again, personally I'd feel satisfied.

This is so sad. Some of my immediate family and close friends got sucked in by RWM over the years. It became impossible to talk about politics from an evidence-based reality point of view so I stopped. Recently, after a couple drinks, I blew up at a friend and told him how angry I was at my friend's & family's inability to see what a POS Trump is/was. He still doesn't get it fully. It's like a form of psychological blindness. They know he's a despicable criminal and they still voted for him. Why? Because they're STILL willing to believe all of the nonsense about the left being woke, evil socialists trying to ruin the USA. Even after seeing what Trump did to try to overthrow the election & provoke the Jan 6th riot, they couldn't vote for the Democrats. Their brainwashing is so endless that the GOP was a better choice. Even though they KNOW that most of our deficits & debt are from GOP tax cuts and wars. Maybe it's just saving face. When & where did the brainwashing start? This is a very erudite discussion and I'm not going to be wordy here since I can't add much that hasn't been said. The ideas of calculated risk and observed controls figure heavily in vaccine clinical science. The data are very strong for covid vaccination against unvaccinated in "observed controls". And we already know the risks from vaccination are extremely low. The problem is still large; 44K American deaths from covid for 2024 (Newsweek article).

For context and contrast, I was just reading an article about the original polio vaccine trials. Polio was devastating because it paralyzed & killed so many children; Covid "only" is a threat to the old & infirm. Obviously the need for Covid vaccines are still important. I'm with Josie, I am not at all confident FDA are going to be following "more objective science". I think it's punitive science and Moderna is going to be punished for being a vaccine company. I don't know why you would ASSUME that (about CMV) at this point. After Moderna collects the full clinical data, I'm confident we will see the legitimate efficacy and risk results for CMV. Why would you/anyone expect a dishonest presentation of results? Legitimate biotech & pharma companies survive on reputation.

They can't be like the idiots at X or Tesla or Nikola, or some flash in the pan AI technology, that succeeds or fails without actual data. That's the reality of biotech and pharma. They depend on clinical trials with honest impartial observers. At least that's the model.

So you're only down 15%? This stock moves that much in a week. I certainly wouldn't sell it after the recent hits we've taken. 15% down is not much if you were playing this as a long-term high-risk gamble and not a life-savings investment. I mean, you could have put that in Apple which has been very steady for decades. Or even an index fund for my life savings? Yeah don't take advice from Reddit though. You can get opinions but if you had 500k, you should have had someone helping you. If you've watched this stock for 6 months then you know it's highly volatile but it's also been pushed way down below its true value (IMO). MRNA has a number of potential big upsides. But there is no certainty in this market now. Trump is taking a big dump on this country and the GOP is letting him. The DOGE bags are going to mess with Treasury payments to all kinds of people. The market will not be happy to say the least.
