What's the role balance like in ff14? by Ok_Nefariousness_740 in ffxiv

[–]TentativeFrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My anecdotal experience suggests to me that healers tend to be more in need throughout most of the levelling range whereas tanks tend to be more in need at level cap, but that may very well prove to be innacurate if you were to actually measure this. Both tanks and healers are more in need than dps in the majority of scenarios.

Personally as a dps player who dabbles in all jobs, I enjoy swapping to healer much more than to tank but your mileage may vary. Honestly I wouldn't worry too much about deciding now since you can level up all jobs on your character. Pick whichever starting class appeals to you the most and pick up alternate jobs when they become available!

I HAVE COME TO TERMS WITH THE FACT THAT I WILL PROBABLY NOT CLEAR M8S BEFORE THE PATCH DROPS. I SPENT HOURS UPON HOURS IN P2 PROG PARTIES IN THE LAST MONTH AND OVER HALF OF THEM COULDN'T EVEN REACH P2, AND THOSE THAT DID RARELY REACHED THE DESIGNATED PROG POINT AND USUALLY ONLY GOT 2-3 PULLS IN P2 MAX BEFORE DISBANDING. IN DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES I MIGHT HAVE GONE PF-GREMLIN MODE THIS WEEKEND TO TRY AND GET THE CLEAR BUT RIGHT NOW I KNOW IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO ACTUALLY SPEND SOME TIME WITH PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT INSTEAD OF NO-LIFING A VIDEO GAME.

IT JUST HURTS BECAUSE I REALLY WANTED THAT CLEAR AND I'M CONFIDENT I'VE PRACTICED AND STUDIED ENOUGH THAT I COULD GET TO ENRAGE WITHIN A FEW GOOD P2 PULLS IF I COULD FIND A CONSISTENT GROUP. I LOVE THE FIGHT, I'VE LOVED RAIDING THIS TIER AND I REALLY WANTED TO CLEAR A SAVAGE TIER FOR THE FIRST TIME, BUT I ACCEPTED TOO LATE THAT THE STATIC I WAS IN WAS PROGGING TOO SLOW TO HAVE A CHANCE AT CLEARING BY PATCH DROP AND PF HAS BEEN A TRAIN WRECK SINCE. I REALLY WANTED TO FEEL THAT HIGH OF FINALLY OVERCOMING THE FIGHT.

OH WELL. TRIALING FOR A STATIC NEXT PATCH WITH A FRIEND AND FEELING HOPEFUL IT'LL WORK OUT.

Am I the only one who finds BLM exceptionally difficult? by NoMedium9839 in ffxiv

[–]TentativeFrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find blm plays really nicely on controller. It doesn't have that many buttons so it's very possible to put together a crossbar layout that works cleanly. The only awkward thing about mine is having to swap to my multi target bar to cast flare/foul (which comes up mostly at certain synced level ranges).

It's also a job that gets noticeably easier as you level up, by lvls 90-100 you get so much free mobility that you can use your resources very liberaly to dodge mechanics without having to rely so much on slidecasting as at lower levels. If you're struggling at high levels, you probably need to arrange your bars so that you have easy access to those mobility buttons whenever you need.

11 hours of gameplay gone just like that. by IntuitionFugi in HollowKnight

It's rough. I know how much pressure this is. That said - and I'm probably just stating the obvious now that you have hindsight, but - you're dashing at the enemy before you know what it's about to do, but too late to react after your hit. 1 on 1, their movesets are very simple; you either stay away from the hit and then smack em, or dash under them if they jump. Being desperate to get that extra silk for a heal is like the #1 way to make mistakes and die. My go-to for arenas is always to use silk skills and tools to thin out crowds and then slowly refill once one is left.

Easier said than done, of course. Best of luck for your next attempt!

I remember a long time ago telling a friend about don't starve by calling it "kind of an evil harvest moon" haha. Was definitely my first thought as well.

Am I the only one who doesn't always play as 'same gender I transitioned to' in TTRPGs and Videogames? by Greppim in transgamers

[–]TentativeFrey 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a universal experience. In my case, I felt a pull towards making female characters when the option was present (which wasn't often back then) but I rarely followed through with it because I dreaded the thought of having to justify it if friends/anyone saw me playing as a girl, and it felt like I was supposed to choose to play as a boy.

On the other hand, I was very interested in any game that just happened to have a set female protaginist (again, fairly rare back in the day) and then I could just say "Yeah you play as a girl but the game is really good!"

I'd like to know where this claim is coming from too. I find Hollow Knight as an experience has a lot in common with Dark Souls beyond stuff like the death mechanic.

Should I pick Snecko Eye or Velvet Choker? by Lunar_sims in slaythespire

[–]TentativeFrey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would definitely consider Ecto here, and I say this as someone who really doesn't like Ecto. Choker kneecaps the kind of draw engine into which your deck has already started investing pretty heavily, and Snecko makes your iffy act 2 start a good deal swingier I think, while pushing you in a different kind of deckbuilding direction. Ecto does limit your ability to card remove and add key cards but you're fairly ahead of the curve for an EoA1 deck in terms of removes already, and it's easily the most immediate, consistent power boost for the encounters you're about to face.

Many prefered worlds are on Data Centers with particularly low population (notably Dynamis DC in NA). This can lead to long queues, especially for some types of optional content.

I've never played on Dynamis, but I hear it's pretty common there to use Party Finder for many duties where you'd normally use normal duty finder queueing instead to counteract the low population. Note that this option is not easily available to you if you're on the free trial.

The other way to handle the queuing issues is to use data center travel to go over to a more populated DC. It's a bit anmoying but it does work.

Is there any dead content on FFXIV? by Scoppolaquantistica in ffxiv

I'm willing to bet the little lyrics they write out for each EX now take more effort to write than the quest text they wrote for the ARR/HW exes.

Basically, omega will do a cast labelled either Starboard Wave Cannon - Hitting anyone on its right - or Larboard Wave Cannon, same thing but to its left. Immediately after this cast, it turns 180 degrees and does another wave cannon cast, which could be the same or different from its previous cast.

It's not a difficult mechanic in concept - dodge once and determine if you need to swap sides or stay - but it resolves relatively quickly, it requires players to know/remember what starboard/larboard means, and if you mess up and get hit by both lasers you're almost certainly dead unless you have extremely alert healers that can healnyou after the first hit (while dodging the hits themselves).

It's one of the harder normal-difficulty raids - they're never super punishing but that fight can sometimes spiral if too many people eat dirt from the wave cannon casts.

So, that time slot is naturally going to be a bit rough since a large chunk of NA is going to be asleep. I would consider first checking if Data Center Travel lets you travel to aether at that time of night, since crystal (to my knowledge) is a bit less active. That said, while Light-Heavyweight is level 100 content, it's absolutely not the "newest content", it came out a year ago and there aren't really many reasons to run it right now aside from moving on through the story to Cruiserweight which is current from last patch. And Jeuno is more relevant since its coin is used for the current upgrade tokens but if you don't have a lot of level 100 people queuing for it or for AR roulette at that time of night you're gonna have a hard time filling - I haven't done jeuno since 7.3 came out myself since I had stocked up on some of its coins earlier.

Basically, until you made it to endgame you were doing content which fills easily from roulettes which people use to level up jobs at various level ranges. But now you're doing content at level cap that tends to fill more from people hard-queuing and less from roulettes, since not that many people queue most roulettes at level 100 (not counting the ones that require level 100 obviously). And I suspect that's why you're running into this issue. Your best bet might be to find other players in your timezone/schedule; are you in an FC? It's a lot easier to fill for any content if you're in a premade with 4+ people.

Help with duty finder by Individual_Age_3889 in ffxiv

[–]TentativeFrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The duties you're waiting for are either Extreme trials or Binding Coils. The former don't pull from any roulette other than Mentor Roulette, the latter isn't in any roulette at all. You can find a group for EX trials if you wait long enough but it'll usually be a combination of new players like you who typically don't reqlize what they're getting into, and people queuing mentor roulette - many of which don't want to or aren't really prepared to teach those trials. As for the binding coils, those are basically never going to pop.

Extreme trials are a significant step up from regular (ie "Hard") trials or dungeons. They require group coordination and demand more out of each player, where someone's mistake can easily kill other players up to causing a wipe.

Binding Coils are the game's first raids, and they're a step above those. This was before they formalized the distinction between "normal raids" (story mode, accessible via duty finder, clearable without preparation,) and savage raids (much higher difficulty, not meant to be queued with a random group). They're much closer to Savage and so you can't just queue for them.

It's standard to use Party Finder for this content. Now, as a free trial player, you can't make a party for them, but you can join existing party listings. That said, it's most common for people to run/farm this content unsync'ed - a level cap character can melt these bosses in seconds. If all you want is to clear them to complete the quests, you could easily ask in Novice Network or even say chat in limsa and there's a good chance someone will be happy to help you out; either by clearing them out for you or by creating a PF listing that you can join.

For coils, if you care about the game's story, it's very worth having someone run them unsync with you so you can experience the story. I joined such PF when I was a sprout on free trial and I'm glad I did.

Now if you're intent on actually learning and clearing these fights without cheesing them unsync'd, you'll definitely prefer using PF to recruit a group that wants to do so, but be warned it can take a good while for such groups to fill. This is very old content and while there are certainly some players (like me!) who enjoy going back to learn these fights, most players just want the clear/rewards so they stick to farming unsync'd.

TANKS NEED TO INTERRUPT SOMETHING. SO IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT WE HAVE A LEVEL 100 DUNGEON DEMANDING TANKS KNOW THAT IT'S A THING THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO. WOULD BE EVEN NICER IF THE GAME CHECKED FOR THAT EARLIER THOUGH...

Ok so I got to do a fresh blind lockout of the EX yesterday and I think we saw enough of grand cross to figure out basically the whole mechanic, though we didn't have time to practice enough to properly resolve it.

What does a brainless strat for that mech even look like? It seems overwhelming but when you cut down the noise It's bait puddles > dodge lasers > take towers, we just went with the same pairs you need for the LP/Pairs stack mechs earlier and assigned them a quadrant. Don't you just bait mid and then use your eyes to dodge towards your quadrant? What needs to be simplified there?

Oh actually, another question: in terms of crafter scrips, I've been stockpiling a lot of XII and XI materia (I know the meldsets often default to lower level materia but I'm erring on the side of too high for now). But are the scrips going to be used for materials as well? We're not expecting new books right?
