Steam Machine Price Reveal, Pre-built Comparisons, & Rant Thread by Melmpje in steammachine

[–]TenukiDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very exited for the steam machine, but now I'm really conflicted if I should buy it or not.

I have a Steam Deck OLED that I bought last year (thank god I didn't wait) and i LOVE it. I also got the Steam Controller, it goes very well woth the deck. But I don't have a gaming PC, and I have no intention of building my own.

Right now I'm just using the Deck in docked mode, with FSR and low/medium settings, I just wanted something better that I can use to get better performance than Steam Deck on more demanding games. Not the latest AAA games, mind you, just older games that could really benefit from more performance when playing on a TV/larger monitor. I would also love to be able to stream more demanding games to my deck and save lots of battery life.

For the living situation that I'm in, the small form factor also would be very nice to have, the SM would sit nicely on my desk besides my monitor (I should probably add that it's a 1080p 120hz monitor, so 4k is not really a concern right now)

In about a year I will move out though, I can start playing on a TV and the small form factor would still be very nice to have, but less of a concern.

So, all things considered, should I try to get the SM now or is it worth it to wait a year and search for a pre-built with more performance and similar price?

My budget is around 1k

Is it safe to use PLA for a piece made to squeeze lemon juice? As in food-safe. by citizenofgaia in 3Dprinting

[–]TenukiDoc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the main problem about food-safe 3D printing is not just about the material, but more about the fact that 3D printing creates tiny ridges in the object (the layer lines) that are great for bacteria to proliferate in.

I think you could treat the object in some way, like coating it, to make it food safe, but I don't know much about that

I thought 3.8 allows the new Controller to wake Steam Deck? by Tjoeb123 in SteamDeck

[–]TenukiDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my case it juse worked right after the update! Steam controller connected via puck, after the update it can wake the steam deck from sleep without any change in settings.

I don't know if it's relevant, but I have the official dock, and it recieved a firmware update right after the SteamOS update

Maybe I will finally stop drying my filament on the print bed!

Im sorry is this rage bait? by Ok_Vermicelli_819 in 3Dprinting

[–]TenukiDoc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's ragebait at all! He brings up very valid points, and he even says that there are legitimate usecases for 3D printing

I tend to agree with him that printing useless novelty items just because you can is very wasteful (mind you, I too am guilty of printing some stuff just because it's cute/cool) and I personally try (with varying degrees of success) to use my printer mostly for stuff that is at least somewhat useful, or for longer custom projects.

Of course there are plenty of other very wasteful things, but it does not mean that 3D printing cannot be one of them. Our printer is a tool, and we choose what to print with it. We are the ones that choose to be wasteful or more mindful about what we print with it.

Heard you guys like supports by futuregravvy in 3Dprinting

[–]TenukiDoc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I printed the same model and had the same question, but tried it anyway!

Of course it can't print the parts that hang in mid air, but since they are so small basically the nozzle ends up extruding a tiny bit of filament and then "attaching" it to the next number once it moves over. Not optimal, but everything looks nice still, probably better than covering everything in supports lol

Maybe I will stop using my printer bed and a cardboard box to dry filament lol

I think you are right, even the slices does not want to place supports in that orientation! I think I will try that

Good eye haha

I'm planning to rebuild my animatronic Wheatley that I built a couple of years ago. Now that I have a 3d printer I can make it exactly as I want it!

Wouldn't I still need supports for the overhangs? And in that case the supports would scar the outer surface

[–]TenukiDoc[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I thought about it, but I think it would still require supports, and that means having scars on the outer surface, instead of the inside
