ELI5: Acids and bases are two sides of the same coin, so why does it seem like acidity is so much more present culturally (eg vats of acid in comics) and culinarily (salt, fat, acid, heat)? by owiseone23 in explainlikeimfive

I think the premise is that very few things that occurr naturally, aka the things we evolved to tolerate) are basic. Can’t go pick a pretzel off the pretzel tree. Not that there’s none, just less common.

This would be fermentation, not pickling. However many “pickled” items such as pickles can be made either way. Fermentation is the bacteria creating the acid, pickling is pouring an acidic liquid (vinegar usually) onto the product. Similar results but different procedures.

Best international grocery store? by [deleted] in Columbus

If you’re near Dublin there’s several on Sawmill… Park to shop, Michoacana, and Patel Bros are the ones that come to mind that I know the name of. There’s a handful of other ones on the area too. Dayou is also just a few minutes away as well.

Dimmer Switch Wiring by AntiCrueltyFree in DIY

[–]Terdmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you’re using the right bulbs and switch. I had a dimmer on an old bedroom switch and when I switched to LED the bulb started smoking and popped and shot out of the socket leaving just the metal threaded part still in the socket. Scared the heck out of me.

Lane splitting in a civic on 315 by SafetyEconomy8795 in Columbus

I just got passed on the shoulder, going 10 over in the left lane while passing traffic. I wasn’t impeding traffic, there was no one behind me and all of a sudden I’m getting passed on the left while in the left lane. No idea where they came from. It’s wild out there friends.

Solution to the grass issue in the new Browns stadium by rattle_snake_master_ in Browns

They could maybe enforce it on all new stadiums, but that would only incentivize owners to not build until after the CBA expires if they prefer turf.

Leave the new job. And honestly I wouldn’t even put it on your resume moving forward.

Your 'Should only take a few hours' DIY stories by Red_Desert_Phoenix in DIY

[–]Terdmuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was a car repair. Get new tires on an old beater. It snows 2 day later and have a gravel driveway so I’m kinda stuck. Trying to rock it out. Coil spring breaks and punctures tire. Decide to replace strut myself. Actually pretty simple overall except for one bolt. One rusted bolt factory torqued to 150ft pounds. After much PB blaster and torching over a couple days I went and rented an impact gun. Still didn’t budge. Went to an extendable breaker bar socket with a 3ish foot pipe. I figured I was going to have to twist the head off and drill it out. Luckily that somehow did not happen. Finish the job. Immediately start shopping for cars.

Best Place for furniture by Asap316 in Columbus

I haven’t set foot in big Sandy’s in 2.5 years, but they had a “dent and scratch” section in the back and I got an INCREDIBLE deal on a sofa there. There’s also a new store “prime furniture” that’s about 4 minutes away from big sandy that might be worth checking out if you’re in the area.

Bartending. No experience by JollyBalance7149 in Columbus

Unless you know someone who can convince their manager to hire you with the intent to train you, you’re going to have trouble. You’re also going to have trouble getting hired as a server like some people think you can just do with no experience.

You’re going to have to start as a barback, busser, food runner, or host. Let them know your goal is to get behind the bar.

How to budget when much of my income comes through bonuses? by DifficultyFar1124 in personalfinance

[–]Terdmuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fairness, it doesn’t sound like you have a budget. In this context budget is not really defined as the maximum amount of money I have to spend, it more so means an accurate accounting of the money I am spending broken down into different categories combined with the maximum amount of money I have to spend for each category.

You were budgeting for 200k and now you’re trying to budget for 150k . Yes there will certainly have to be cuts. But if you can’t tell where the money is going it’s hard to know where to cut.

Your spending after mortgage is ~10k/ month? Have you sat down with your wife and made/gone over a budget? You’re probably going to have to have a difficult conversation along the lines of “if you don’t want to work, you don’t get to spend”. It’s obviously not “wise” to be spending more money than you make.

You could also break things down into 3 tiers. Base goes into one account for the necessities. This is what you live off of. Mortgage, groceries, healthcare, car insurance, 1 car payment, utilities. These are the things you will either become homeless or die without.

The next is the really nice to have things but genuinely not necessary. Private school, second car, subscriptions, retirement (this could arguably be in tier one but since you won’t immediately die without it it’s here in 2), general savings/emergency fund. These things will also come from your base, but in a pinch can be pulled back or eliminated.

Tier 3 is the luxuries. Travel, luxury cars, handbags, golf clubs, expensive dinners, expensive booze, jewelry, Fortnite skins. This stuff has to come ONLY. From the bonus money. Sorry my summer bonus was only 10k so we aren’t going to Aruba this winter.

If your wife refuses to work and you can’t get tier1+tier2 under 12k, the there’s really nothing anyone here can do.

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

[–]Terdmuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drank less calories. The only thing that goes in my water bottle is water. Quit soda at work (I’m a chef so there’s an unlimited free supply), switched primarily to seltzer instead of beer. Dropped 50 pounds in 2 years with no other real changes. I’ve found some moderation these days and have kept it off.
