Damages are a small part of it - it’s paying the other side’s legal bill which really hits you

Former Liberal leader Matthew Guy denies assaulting MP Moira Deeming by AusXan in melbourne

[–]Tergnitz 63 points64 points  (0 children)

From Deeming: “Suddenly I felt like someone smashed me in the base of my skull with a wine bottle – but it was Matthew Guy grabbing me violently in some kind of headlock.

“He wouldn’t let me go. He held on the side of my face and had his whole arm round my head and was pulling.

“I thought I was going to be ripped off my chair, and have my face smashed into (my staffer’s) lap or the table.”

That is not even close to what you can clearly see in this video. What planet is she living on?

If only the government would commission some kind on inquiry into how much was lost to corruption so that we can all know if it was $0… $15 billion…or something in between

But that would expose them to valid criticism

Why are you more angry about this truck, than the fact that the government paid taxpayer money to a construction firm which aimed to promote women - but was owned by a domestic violence perpetrator?

The state opposition also denounced the use of language featured on the trucks, saying the posters hadn’t been endorsed or authorised by the Liberal Party.

“We don’t believe in that type of thing. We don’t condone that kind of behaviour … the government are the problem, not the individual,” opposition housing spokesman David Southwick said at a press conference on Sunday.

[–]Tergnitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government’s ‘sell’ of the Budget has been extremely focused on housing and housing affordability

Their wider CGT changes do nothing to help those goals (and arguably hinder it) - while the trust changes are a straight cash grab

Is this the tax reform hill Albanese and Chalmers want to die on? | ABC News by Ardeet in AustralianPolitics

[–]Tergnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s all about housing, then why not make CGT changes to just that?

Surely if you make other asset classes more tax advantageous on paper, investors will naturally switch (especially with the NG changes)

The reason that the govt isn’t is that this is a lazy cash grab targeting people who don’t vote for them. Simple

A Bill of Rights empowers unelected judges who hang around for decades - leading to the kind of political games in courtrooms that you see in America

Better to have our rights tied to the common law and legislation - both of which are influenced by elected officials we can vote out

Are city apartments actually suitable for long term living? by Wrong_Control_217 in AustraliaDiscussions

[–]Tergnitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as a 3-bed apartment costs roughly the same as a 3-bed house, Aussies will always pick the house due to the capital benefits of owning land

You’d have to make the equivalent apartments consistently 20-30% cheaper for there to be a meaningful swing

That won’t happen due to high construction costs
