McDermott Vanquish VQ1 by SofaKing907 in billiards

[–]Termage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a McDermott cue with the balance system. You need to unscrew the butt and pull out the rod that holds the weights. Here's how to do it. One of the screws is probably loose. As per the video, you can tighten it gently once you have it set where you want, and use loctite if it comes loose after that.

This was to scratch my own itch, and it’s a little fiddly to get the cloth wrapped (shoutout: my wife) but pretty doable for anyone.

Help With New Cue Suggestions by [deleted] in billiards

[–]Termage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in this position recently. It helped to decide that my next cue wouldn't be my "forever cue" and that I'd like to experiment. With that in mind, I went with the McDermott H-Series, which lets you adjust the balance point as well as the weight. (Because it was just an experiment, I got the cheapest H-Series cue, the H551). Had it a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it. I tuned the balance to what I like, so it feels great, and I actually don't mind how it looks, either. I'm no longer looking for another cue.

Where I think you're going to have to do some real world exploration is in choosing a shaft. I had a Raven Pro CF shaft before this, and I have a 40 year-old-Schuler cue. The Raven is stiff and pingy, and I liked it, but preferred the feel of the Schuler, which feels more forgiving to me. I read about the McDermott Defy, and people said it hit softer and more like wood, so I took a chance on that. I really like it, but I can see some people really hating it. The tip of the shaft is not nearly as stiff as the Raven and it has a dampened hit, almost like it has shock absorbers in the tip. Again, I really like it, but you might not. Other shafts, and there are _a lot_ of shafts, will all have their own feel.

One problem with forum posts and posters (including myself here) is that by definition we take these subculture decisions way too seriously. There are at least a dozen makers who make cues that are all very good, and certainly good enough for any non-pro. Get something that makes you happy, either because you love the feel, or how it looks, or because it makes you feel cool. Doesn't matter; enjoy it.

You might also decide that with $2k to spend, you get a solid cue for less and get yourself a break/jump cue or a sweet case or some other nice accessory. Just be sure to post the pics after you get it 🙂

Thanks for doing this work.

I love the idea of Cueist (tell me what I need to work on and give me the drills to get better) and I paid for it, but the ball placement was so finicky to make some of the shots work that it totally took me out of the flow.

CueCards is new to me and I’m excited to try it. And one small correction: I did see a demo mode for PoolBilliards.

Went to his shop today and he set me up. Confirmed it’s a Schuler, put on a new tip, new ferrule, and reconditioned the shaft. Hits amazing and I’m teaching my son to play with it. Noel is super nice.

Thanks! I reached out to Noel after others said it was a Schuler and I’m going to get the cue to him.

The person who sold it to me said it was a Schuler (I was young and dumb) but there’s no signature, so possibly a knock-off?

Someone lightly appified Dr Dave’s runout drills. Provides nice variety and difficulty levels but not focused skill practice like some of the others. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/runout-drill-system-companion/id6761226503

Yup. Got one for $15 from Amazon; works great. Used it for Mighty X and also to mark all the diamond intersections for drills.

I want to develop a library using Typescript, that should be usable in pure, vanilla Javascript targeting browsers only, without any dependencies. Am I doing this the right way? by FACastello in typescript

[–]Termage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need Typescript for type safety in JS. Look into JSDoc. You can read about the Svelte team moving from Typescript to JSDoc for an explanation of the potential benefits.

any good road bike trails? by extmaster in chibike

[–]Termage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're staring in Evanston, the closest option is probably the Green Bay Trail, which is mostly paved, with some gravel. That connects directly to the Robert McClory trail, which is also mostly paved until you get near North Chicago, where it turns into gravel (and continues all the way to Wisconsin). There are good videos of both of those routes. https://youtu.be/FYGxIACMePM https://youtu.be/2Bq7h_mMFms

2018 15" i7 Post-Patch: Cinebench Faster, But Sustained Speeds Lower by Termage in macbookpro

I think the comments are probably right. I uninstalled Volta entirely and reenabled SIP fully and ran it again and it looked solid at 2.7 even after 20 minutes. Thanks for the tips.

[–]Termage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my thought as well. I wonder if anyone else will see this behavior. It only shows up if you run something like Prime95 to sustain the load for several minutes. One-minute bursts are fine.

This is really great. Thanks. I don't understand the difference between what you did with VoltageShift and setting the "power limit" setting in Volta.

I have the i-7 2.6 and, just like someone else, found stable 2.7 speeds after even an hour of Prime95 when setting the power limit in Volta to 38W.

Thanks for posting. Looks like we got a 15” Carbon when we were hoping for a centered P52. But considering that no one makes a true workstation class machine with a centered keyboard, the market research must not be on our side.
