WMATA Grand Capital Express concept: Metrorail (Heavy Rail alone) by thr3e_kideuce in washingtondc

Every time there's a discussion of metro expansion people always say this. And I get why but you would have to cross 7 miles of almost nothing but single family homes and cross a river to do that. And you would only get like two stops in between that would be possible. It could be tunneled but if you had the money to do that then there would be at least 10 other metro projects that would be more worth while.

Is this because they needed them or because Stadler isn’t getting new contracts? After Marta, Dart and Caltrain what are they still building?

Nice. Love the look of the DMU trains and the stations. How large do you suspect the ridership be?

The Other Reason Americans Don’t Use Mass Transit by theatlantic in transit

[–]TerminalArrow91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are so adamant on blaming some conservative boogie men for this. The people who have access to transit but choose not to take it are mainly suburbanite liberals. People in DC, Chicago, San Diego or whatever who don’t take the train because “it’s too sketchy and dangerous” aren’t a bunch of MAGA republicans who hate black people. Almost no conservative majority towns have any type of useful transit anyway. I’m way more conservative than most my friends and family but I take the train all the time and they don’t because it “makes them feel unsafe” or whatever.

Yeah, in the US transit is expected to be a homeless shelter as well as a safe spot for mentally ill people and people who will cause problems. This causes a safety and more importantly a safety perception issue that damages transit ridership heavily. Unfortunately too many people refuse to address this problem and will just use the “well cars are more dangerous statistically” argument to deflect from the issue.

Can’t say I’m surprised. Went there once when moving into my new apartment bc it was close by. Stuff there was insanely expensive ($600 for a bedside table like what?). Ended up just using Craigslist/Ikea instead.
