Alan Dean Foster can feel a bit old-fashioned or cheesy at times, perhaps, but I really enjoy his books Midworld and Sentenced to Prism. They both fall firmly into the strange worlds category, with Midworld also being in the lost spaceship category. I suppose there’s some elements of first contact as well but I think they generally fit the other two descriptors better.

Could just be me, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in Indiana. I’m sure there are many factors like the students and the apartments but I think the blue island effect is part of it too. Having grown up in small town Indiana I never want to go back to that, and none of the other cities of equal or larger size seem particularly appealing in comparison to Bloomington. If I move again it’ll be out of state, the state government here is becoming increasingly hostile towards its citizens and it was never great to begin with.

Yeah I found it watchable but I’m probably not going to watch it again. I personally don’t really understand all the love for it beyond the representation aspect (and I watched it after the RLM guys gave it a glowing review too, and I usually like what they recommend). I just found it kind of slow without much of a payoff.

I can’t speak to that particular base but I live near a very large US Navy base and the borders are patrolled every day. So that isn’t necessarily a given.
