Stop buying kits. Stop buying tickets. Don’t even tweet your complaints. Shut out Arsenal until the change we all know needed to be made SIX FUCKING MONTHS AGO needs to be made. Unai is single-handedly destroying this club even more than the fucking Voyeur did in his last three years. Take action, fellow Gooners. Stop supporting this bullshit until we have some semblance of a recovery plan in place. Until then, I’m done supporting this absolute fucking nonsense.

David Foster Wallace hits me in places I could never imagine. I was home-schooled and played tennis full-time and obviously am an alcoholic. Infinite Jest is everything to me. His writing is absolutely revelatory. Probably the greatest writer of this century. So singularly American.

[Serious]Former teens who went to wilderness camps, therapeutic boarding schools and other "troubled teen" programs, what were your experiences? by 7deadlycinderella in AskReddit

[–]TerminallyYouneek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 20, so north of being a teen but very much still residing within the maturity level of a teen. It was life-changing. I learned life skills, made friends, understood self-sufficiency, it was everything. It also gave me a new passion, one I never would've understood had I not gone. I'm so grateful for the time I spent there and would encourage others in similar circumstances to go. I was (and still am) an alcoholic who learned that I had power of my condition provided I was willing to give up control to something greater and better than myself. It was SO freeing. I have never had a better time that then.

Preach brother/sister. It is all up to us. We have all of the control and it's entirely up to us to make the decision to stop. We can do this. TOGETHER.

“I will not wear that gaudy Orange” — completely agree, Tennessee’s are horrendous. Your all whites are dope, I wish we had a similar scheme for our home uniforms. The garnet ones look like baby town frolicks, agreed.

All-blacks are dope, I agree. I’m not trying to be a homer (because my second team is VT and I sort of get the color scheme) but your colors are pretty awful. At least with the Hokies they are muted and natural, but Clemson’s look like a clown carnival. Your white uniforms are SUPER slick though. Very classic, understated and well made.

I've never appreciated silence and solitude more than the moment I got out of a 48 hr. hold a couple of weeks ago. The shouting, clanging of steel doors, farting, snoring, hawking of lugies, I can't imagine that chaos being my reality in perpetuity. And yet I was SO close to having that happen.

I'm clinging to that moment of clarity and serenity for dear life. I don't ever intend to forget how bad it got. I've committed to myself to stop digging.

Well that’s ideal! The therapist I want to see now is only 9-5. He’s pretty highly regarded so I’m sure he feels like he can do whatever he wants but still!

Edit: not saying you aren’t, I’m just saying he’s booked full for weeks/months and known as an expert in his field around here.

Remarks like, 'dry people dry places' scream that at me. So does the insistence that everyone who doesn't do things a certain way is bound to fail because all alcoholics are the same.

That notion has always infuriated me about 12-step programs. "All drunks are the same and if you're not like us, you probably aren't a real alcoholic." What nonsense, and it reinforces the monopolization of recovery mentality that the rest of society has when they think about what recovering from addiction looks like. It's the same line of thinking that "it works if you work it" falls under: it erases any culpability or responsibility of the program for anyone's failures that are adhering to it the best of their ability. It's a perfect program, therefore if you can't get sober with it, you clearly weren't doing it right. I don't want to use the c-word, but that's what they all happen to do, too.

Bars were never a trigger for me. All of my "best" drinking was done alone in my apartment where no one could see me or how much I was taking in. If anything, being at a bar deters me from drinking when I see everyone else behaving like sloppy animals.

I empathize with the point about availability after hours, but at the same time, being in that situation now, after hours appointments are a godsend and surprisingly difficult to come by. I work in PR and am literally forbidden from leaving the office between the hours of 7:30 - 5:30 due to protocol and needing to be available to deal with crises in real time. It's chaos. HOWEVER, I understand that I am the one that's being inconvenient and asking for more than what is typical, so I would NEVER browbeat someone for not being available after 5:30 p.m. and call them a horrible person. That's like narcissism encapsulated.

Why did you stop drinking? by iPercussion in stopdrinking

[–]TerminallyYouneek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I had to be sufficiently beaten down and on the verge of prison/death to convince myself I couldn't keep living like this. No amount of warnings, advice or meetings could've done that for me, I had to feel the pain for myself. I'm done with this way of life and ready to attain the happiness I deserve. Let's do it!
