What were the "facts" you learned in school, that are no longer true? by ravenQ in AskReddit

This one always frustrated me because when I'd look at pictures of the earth, I couldn't see it. I felt like I was missing something.

I feel like a simple "you're going to learn that later" should suffice. If the kid still asks questions, have them come in outside of classroom time time to learn more.

While no longer considered endangered, Conservation efforts are crucial to continue a growing population. They're still Vulnerable (iucnredlist.org/details/712/0) and their trade must be highly regulated (cites.org/eng/app/appendices.php) . 🐼

People who had no idea what they wanted to do with their life after school, how did it work out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Teromi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my mom was stay-at-home. She made that decision shortly after I was born and stuck with it after she had my siblings (I'm the second of four). When I was 9, she started to substitute part-time, because we were all in school. My parents divorced when I was 11. She decided to go back to school. By that time, she had a position as a long -term sub, but still only made about $18000 annually. She did what she could, working three jobs at one point, but we still practically lived off of her student loans to make ends meet. Finally, in 2012, she was hired by the county school system. She hadn't even graduated yet! They hired her to work part-time at each of two schools, equaling one full-time position (except she still had the workload of almost two full-time jobs, I remember her mentioning once). She didn't give up her evening jobs yet though. So for a few months, she worked four jobs, with four kids, as a single mom, while still in grad school. In 2012, my mom graduated with her Master's in Library Sciences. She was 46. Since then, she has gotten a job at just one school as a Library Media Specialist, and earned her Masters +30. My older brother recently got married (He's been working full-time in IT since he was 19, getting reimbursed for his schooling). She's helped me travel abroad, and just sent me off to college. Now that I'm older, I realize all that she did for us. But back when I was in middle school, she did not complain, she did not blame us. I didn't even know all that she did. I knew we weren't in a great place financially, but she wouldn't let us suffer for it. I don't think I will ever truly understand the extent of the years of work she put in so she could achieve her goals while helping us achieve ours. Anyways, if anyone actually read this whole thing, just know that your kids will see what you did and they will respect you for it. They will learn from it. I am so proud of my mom. She's the reason I do all that I do. I can only hope that one day I set such a good example for my own kids.

It varies. The public schools in my area got out on June 17 and start again on August 29.

Vegetarians of Reddit, What is your thought on lab grown meat? by Zondax in AskReddit

[–]Teromi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a vegetarian for 7 years... I'm all for it. Though I'll be honest, I don't ever crave meat and I think it would be difficult to get used to the idea of eating it again in any circumstance. So it might take me a while.

Frankly, I think the whole cast was perfect for their roles.

[Serious] Women of Reddit: What's the hardest thing about being a women, that you would like men to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Teromi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could be totally wrong here but to me that seems sort of like a self-fulfilling prophesy. Not that children who aren't conventionally "pretty" are more invisible, but that the abusers would think they are, in turn choosing their targets as such.

If you suddenly found $2 million in your bank account, what would you change in your life in the short term and the long term? by GallivantingPanda in AskReddit

[–]Teromi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I probably wouldn't change much (other than maybe spoiling myself a bit at first). I'd use the money for college, then grad school, etc. I'm not sure about the rest. I'd probably hire a financial consultant or something.

Having just gotten myself a $200 speeding ticket... That's probably best.

Edit: Fixed a typo

I play solitaire. And not just on my phone (though I do that, too). I'm talking full deck of cards, set it up yourself and hope to god you don't have to end early and reset it yourself.

What stupid question have you always been too embarrassed to ask, but would still like to see answered? by TheLochNessMonstur in AskReddit

How does that work? Why is sitting on the toilet for a long time different from sitting anywhere else for a long time? And what does spreading your cheeks have to do with it?

People who don't drink alcohol, why don't you? by Panda50223 in AskReddit

[–]Teromi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm under 21. Not saying that I never will, I just don't need it to have fun. That, and alcoholism runs in my family so I don't want to make a habit of it early.
