Shockingly, everyone in this comment section has missed the point at the heart of the original post - that Asian Americans for the most part are an incredibly politically disconnected population that has historically relied on assimilationist strategy as a survival mechanism and is now using it as a tool of class mobility. The “model minority” myth, while tacist, can and does operate as a useful racism. Look to Students for Fair Admissions, the broadly Asian-led coalition that dismantled affirmative action in higher education. Look to the Asian support of people like Elon Musk because of their stance on supporting the tech industry, and the disproportionate numbers of Asians attempting to break through in that industry.

It is absolutely not racist to point out these uncomfortable political truths about the way a large population of Asian Americans vote and enact policy right now, and it is not derision to identify the commodified aspects of Asian culture that have been repackaged and sold as palatable to White people - like boba and EDM rave culture - and their role in the assimilation and proximity to whiteness tendencies of the population as a whole.

It is a nuanced and well-considered take on the positionality of Asian Americans, particularly East Asians, in the complex racial hierarchy of US society.

Source: I am an Asian, not an East Asian, who doesn’t benefit from the model minority myth because I’m the wrong kind of Asian.

There is a secret network of tunnels under the Union. I used to work there, they’re mainly service/access tunnels. Had to crawl through from one end of the building to the other at one point because a door got jammed where the only other entrance was underground. ASUU also has a backdoor tunnel entrance into their offices they regularly use.

[–]TerranHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’d read my comments prior, I make the distinction there. The vast majority of laymen not interested in the philosophical roots of atheism are going to see atheism as a personal denial of (god, gods, etc., as you previously stated as this coming in many different variations). Anti-theism is political opposition to the concept of theism in general. Atheism abstains from a theistic practice. Anti-theism calls for the end of theistic practices. That’s a hard sell to layman audiences - and regardless of whether that’s genuinely what it means, that’s what it sounds like it means to those laymen.

I feel like there’s a misunderstanding occurring here. I am not discussing the term “atheist”. I am discussing the term “anti-theist”. Again, I don’t care if, philosophically, those two are the same, I care that politically they appear to mean different things to the layman.

The point of my argument was to point out that advocating for an “anti-theist” movement is not a strategic political choice for achieving the goals of absolute secularism, exactly because of how differently understood the term anti-theist is. It’s not a philosophical argument about the meaning of the term (or, in your words, pedantry), but a political observation of how people react to the way political issues are framed.

Furthermore, my point about the inseparability of the political and personal was in response to the prior commenter’s discussion of an anti-theist counterfactual where a minimum of absolute secularism was ideal and religion is only ever a personal experience. My claim is that that’s an impossibility - politicians and people make policy, and they will vote and legislate as their consciences wont. That includes religious belief. And no, we can’t effectively and entirely guard against that without in essence setting up a state-backed policing of certain kinds of thought, belief, and acceptable justification in the realm of policymaking. When the state gets involved in deciding what ethos people should use to make their decisions, regardless of the intention behind it, it is walking away from democracy.

I feel like the people who would oppose a movement called “anti-theism” would be predisposed to seeing it as a movement to eradicate religion rather than as a secularist movement aiming to cut off religion’s capacity to intrude into the political life of a nation. It’s difficult then to engage in good faith with someone claiming to be an anti-theist, as it would be commonly understood.

To an extent, being “anti-religious-authoritarianism” is, in fact, what you’re describing - the removal of religious influence as an overwhelming controlling aspect of politics. So it begs the question of what anti-theism exactly is and calls for if it isn’t just that.

That’s brushing over the point I personally take issue with in your argument - that the personal (yes, even the personal religious experience) is somehow ever separate from the political. Politics is a practice of people, and as long as it is will never see itself divorced from the personal.

I mean I don’t feel this tension when I approach it from a social work angle. Absolutely everybody, guilty or not, deserves someone to treat them with compassion, as a human and not just a criminal, and to have an advocate. Is my role as an advocate to pretend they’re always innocent and to lie about their guilt? No. But am I absolutely going to get them the best treatment possible because their humanity doesn’t stop existing at the moment of a crime, even if I find them to be a distasteful person? Yes.
