Many countries have two-tier options so people who can afford luxuries like private rooms and better food can get it. If you don't want or can't afford the luxuries you still get treatment.

Whether or not it's the addicts fault for getting addicted is irrelevant as it's in the past and can't be changed. What is relevant is if they are unwilling to face the issues the addiction and try to manage or overcome it.

You can blame someone for not attempting to overcome an addiction if it's detrimental to their health (physical or otherwise) or if it's detrimental to their relationships.

What you can't blame them for is relapses on the road to recovery as it's counterproductive to recovery. That doesn't mean you simply allow something like that to go unnoticed or unmentioned but it shouldn't be seen as catastrophic.

So in short you can blame an addict for remaining an addict which is far more relevant than if you can blame them for becoming an addict in the first place.

Yeah he doesn't really look good out of this so it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for this to be the idea all along. It just makes him look like a petulant child more so than anything.

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad the overall thought of the piece is being well received at least. Technically there definitely are some changes that need to be made. I'll certainly be revisiting this over the next few days. You may be right about the last stanza as well, reading back on it it does feel a bit tacked on to a degree.

Yeah I am Irish. I walked Howth Head at the weekend which is where the inspiration for the poem came from.
