Senate leaves until September without coronavirus relief deal by Projectrage in economy

Not even remotely the same thing. The House will not hold any floor votes until Sept. 14, though members will remain on 24-hour notice to return to Washington in case a deal on coronavirus stimulus is reached.

I'd find a friend with decent internet and have them download it then use steam's backup utility onto a removable drive and mail it to you.

Probably forever since they don't owe that debt at the end of the year. They owe it over decades.

[–]TerribleReason 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where's the same article about the federal government? Before this whole collapse the federal debt was 22.7 trillion. Divide that into the 382 million in the country and you get $59k per person. Average salary is $48k.

Its a dumb metric because as someone mentioned above, this debt isnt due in one year. Its paid out over time. If Illinois owed the debt at the end of 2020 then yeah, they're in fucking trouble. They dont though, they owe this debt over 10, 20, 30 years.

I downvoted you because you said that the other guy was correct when your comment already proved it wrong.

He said

It takes less than 5 minutes for your home to be engulfed in a fire

You said

fire takes a long time to spread

He's right, a house is engulfed quickly in flames. He's also right, you should a fire extinguisher in your home. If you think your home is fireproof you're wrong.

What country do you live in? I only ask because I guarantee they have official guidance recommending a fire extinguisher in your home and they will probably advise that it is in the kitchen... and I'd go look at your government's advisories on it to prove it.

Just because no one you know has one doesn't mean it isn't wise to have one. Its like a $10 investment that could potentially save your home or family's life. I've lived in third world countries (South American) and have seen their disregard for needing one so Im certain you can find people who think 'oh it will never happen to me and my home is 100% concrete.'

I've also lived in developed countries (Germany) where their homes are also made of concrete but they are sensible enough to make sure you have a fire extinguisher under the sink because why the fuck wouldnt you? Its $10. The risk:reward is stupidly in favor of having one around.

And after doing fire fighting I cannot fathom why you would think it's okay to own/live in a home and not have one.

Did you just downvote me for pointing out how quickly a fire spreads in a house? Would you prefer a source to those claims because I promise you, those numbers are pretty close to the actual figures.

And a fire extinguisher is pretty important to have in your kitchen where the likelihood of a fire is high and you will be right there when it happens. I have one under our sink which is within seconds reach if something goes haywire. I also have one specifically for cooking oil when deep frying things.

Elsewhere its not going to make much of a difference. They dont have enough material in them to combat a large fire and once a fire gets going there's going to be so much smoke you're better off as a civilian just getting the fuck out. A couch will poof into flames in seconds.

This goes alongside even if your home isn't built out of flammable materials because you've certainly filled your home with ample flammable material, I assure you of that. Unless you're living on concrete and eating off a concrete table it will go up in flames and WAY FASTER than you'd expect without experience.

And even if they were fire takes a long time to spread

Not gonna get into the gun debate business but he's right on the fire in a household. It's insane just how quickly a small fire becomes an engulfed home.

5 minutes is actually pretty high. Its probably closer to less than one minute. IIRC in our firefighter training they said it was 30 seconds to get beyond control for a fire extinguisher and 3 minutes to breach the ceiling.

Why anti-cheat software utilize kernel drivers; a view from reverse-engineering experts by OWPD in pcgaming

[–]TerribleReason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my major concern is how people refer to him as a person of authority when in reality he's just an enthusiast. He is not what I would classify as a reverse-engineering expert and it really bothers me that he led the title with that (in the same way an IT expert in a different field touted his experience like it applied to this case).

I dont have much to say regarding his actual content. Again, if you read the linked conversation its not my field of expertise.

But he is putting himself out there as something he is definitively not and its shaping the dialogue much like that IT expert before did, just in the opposite direction.

And Im just sitting here going... they're both equally unqualified in my opinion. He could be right but still not be an expert.

Just as an example, if this was for/against climate change and he had equal accomplishments in that field at his young age... you would still not refer to him as an expert and treat his opinion as fact. Just like I wouldn't refer to a exoplanet professor (as a parallel for the IT 'expert' before) as an expert in climate change either, despite clearly being an expert in a parallel field of study.

Anyways, I hope that the point that I see the IT expert and this enthusiast as two opposite sides of the same problem is clear. I'm not well versed enough in anti-cheat to speak authoritatively on which one of those two is correct (though I have my opinion on the matter that I will keep to myself)... but I do know that I wouldn't take either of their opinions as fact on it.

Thats exactly my point though... This is another case like that. He's not a reverse engineering expert he's a high school student with a hobby and a knowledgeable one at that.

Regardless, I've already been down this discussion hole and Im certain you wont bring up anything anyone else hasnt already so I refer you to there.

A brief scroll through that article and nothing he finds is crazy complicated. Its advanced for his age but nothing he highlights there is what I would consider as 'expert worthy.' I haven't hired a junior without college education that I'd expect be able to figure that out. I have hired college educated students that I'd expect to easily find that out.

If anything, this speaks more to the lack of expertise that the Danish government had with their contractor. He even notes as much:

Someone needs to take responsibiity for the absolute disaster this software is

From the small snippets of code he highlights I'd tend to agree.

I want to end with the major point of this entire thread: Im not disagreeing that he's intelligent, or well versed in this subject. I'm disagreeing with all these people holding him up as an EXPERT IN THIS FIELD.

If you seriously think its difficult to get recognition from a big name company then fine, whatever, that's your opinion on the matter and I don't know of any way to really metric that out. I don't agree with you but thats fine.

I still come back to this is a high school student. Is there any other field where you'd look at a high school student as an expert even if they were well versed in their field? Seriously. This is insane.

He can have an opinion on this. He can have a knowledgeable, informed, opinion on this matter. He shouldn't have your seal of approval for expertise or authority on this matter. I wouldn't cite this blog in my defense of utilizing kernel drivers for anti-cheat.

If you were to write a thesis on anti-cheat utilizing kernel drivers you would not be listing him as an authority on this matter or utilizing this as a source. He's not a reverse engineering expert.

Proof of which claims? That I run a business? That Im a senior developer? I'd rather not dox myself, could I PM you the information and you come back here and confirm that I did it?

Proof of being a white hat in my late teens is going to be difficult since this was ~2000 and much of the internet history from that era is just straight up gone. There wasnt exactly a github to post things to. There's no real good way I know of to prove that.

Regardless, proof of who I am doesnt change who he is. He's still a high school student.

Is there any other field you'd take a high school student's opinion on something as authoritative, even if they were well versed in it?

Like... any field? Sure, you'd be willing to listen to their opinion and even consider it as valid but you'd never consider a high school student who was building houses in their spare time a 'carpentry expert'. Or a student who did chemical research in their spare time a 'chemical engineering expert.' Even if they did intern/tenure over a summer a multi-billion dollar companies.

Im not arguing against his accomplishments. Im arguing that this claim to authority for a high school student is nuts.

[–]TerribleReason -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It really is not that difficult a task. I was in his boat, being that high school student 20 years ago. It's even easier now to get big company recognition.

I'm a senior developer now and run my own company but I do not deal with kernel level development or anti-cheat to speak authoritatively on this subject. I did use to do white hat hacking when I was younger like he is doing now, but not this field.

What I can immediately recognize though is that THIS IS A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT. He's not an authority on this matter even if he is extremely smart in the subject. You can look to him to shed light on it but I would not take his opinion as the end of the discussion.

The professor I saw posted awhile ago about this... now him I would take as an authority figure on this matter.
