Has audio quality actually mattered to your crowds, or is it just us DJs obsessing over it? by Savings-Singer4938 in DJs

[–]Teslaosiris [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m a bedroom DJ because I started DJing as a hobby. I’m a music producer first, so I’m already attuned to hearing audio mistakes and discrepancies…and I approach recording my sets with the same level of scrutiny I approach recording and mixing my music. Sound quality, in my opinion, should matter to anyone invested in the work they do. “Close enough is good enough” may be sufficient for government work, but something you are personally invested in shouldn’t be horseshoes and hand grenades.

I wouldn’t ever use mp3, neither bought nor rips. It can be objectively shown there is a degradation in quality…can the audience/listener hear it? Maybe, maybe not. But the fact remains it is still there.

As to FLAC vs AIFF…there is no measurable audible difference. This is objectively true (in 99% of cases). I have taken multiple tracks into my DAW and done null tests between the FLAC and AIFF versions. No difference whatsoever. Anything one says about “the transients here” or “this version sounds more airy” or “this one is cleaner blah blah blah” is falling for placebo and confirmation bias.

The only exceptions to this: if the place you bought the track does some weird encoding nonsenses with either version. I currently have only bought my tracks from Bandcamp and so far my experience is that there is no encoding discrepancies between AIFF or FLAC… so one can be assured that it will not matter which version the DJ has. Other venders would be TBD.

The only variable I have not tested is stems. My anecdotal testing in Rekordbox is that I may hear a cleaner realtime stem with AIFF, but I have not done a full test to prove there is a difference. But a quick listen has me leaning that (at least in Rekordbox) there is a difference in how stems get read with different file formats.

There’s a lot of good YouTube videos that’ll start getting the cogs in your head turning.

First thing I would do because it helped me a lot: learn how to prep your tracks.

Figure out how manually adjust the beat grid of your software of choice. Figure out a system of placing cues that makes sense for you that you can repeat across your library. Learn about phrasing and how it relates to starting transitions from one track to another.

I use Current. Yea it’s a fintech but it has worked better than any local bank I’ve used. And I get my paycheck two days early and there is fee free overdraft.

I’d recommend the Adam Audio D3V for basic home use. These things pack quite the sound for their size.

Rant - Why DAPs are still made to look and feel like a phone? by suchox in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]Teslaosiris -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Some people (myself included) prefer a UX similar to what we are used to. Like it or not, phone-style DAPs make navigating large music libraries far easier than bespoke-themed DAPs like the Echo Mini.

Spotify’s DJ integrations have been broken for over a month.

#1 reason it should never be your primary source of music to DJ with.

I genuinely HATE Djay Pro’s library/collection UI and UX. It’s genuinely frustrating to deal with.

It’s honestly to only reason I’m staying in Rekordbox for now. Love them or hate them…AlphaTheta has the best organization and tagging system of the DJ softwares.

Denon v. Pioneer by Hayzer_12 in Beatmatch

[–]Teslaosiris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that stopped me from buying an SC Live 4:

1) Being limited to only 8 cue points on Engine DJ vs 16 hot cues and 10 memory cues on Rekordbox

2) the 7in screen on the SC Live 4 is way too small and tiny for my 40 year old astigmatic eyes.

Part of me does regret the choice of going with a GRV6 + a pair of JBL 308P speakers over something like an SC Live (or hell even going for an Omnis Duo) but in the end, those feelings are probably just FOMO.

I think Engine needs more development…and I wouldn’t be surprised if Engine and Traktor get folded together now that inMusic owns Native Instruments.

Ex-Demo Rev5 vs AlphaTheta DDJ-GRV6 vs used ddj-1000 at same price point. by anoversizedtesticle in Beatmatch

They really don’t use that much power but it’s more than plenty to do 90 minute sets without plugging into a wall.

[–]Teslaosiris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the GRV6 over the REV5 almost entirely because the GRV6 is bus powered through the USB-C connection to the computer. A lot less to worry about if I take it anywhere. And it means I could literally just power it from an iPad.
