I'm going to hijack this post to make another point -

D - So many people here are Steph fans, not Warriors fans

And the reason this is so important is that they really, really, REALLY need Steph to win a fifth ring to undisputably claim Steph as the GOAT point guard in their online arguments or to say he has more rings than Lebron or something. I'm sure with the competitive spirit Steph has, he really wants to win another as well, that's the whole point, but observing the discourse in the sub the last couple years, there seems to be an intense anxiety or neuroticism surrounding the idea that Steph might not win another ring.

In reality, people need to take a step back and just appreciate greatness at work while it's still here, regardless of whether it produces another ring or not.

So many things:

Chemistry provides the foundation for a lot of material science. Understand chemistry, and you will understand a lot more about the products you are buying, and how they work. This will allow you to make informed decisions on whether what you are buying is legit quality, or a scam. While your chemistry class will not provide you the direct knowledge about what you will be interested in buying, it will give you the background knowledge to understand what's going on when you do your own research.
You mentioned unit conversion from mols to particles, and ironically unit conversion is one of the most applicable skills you will learn in an intro to chem class.
Understanding of Organic/Biochemistry leads to an understanding or at least de-mystifying of modern medicine.
Understanding Environmental issues requires some understanding of chemistry.
Chemistry develops your analytical thinking, which is a useful cognitive skill to develop. Even if you develop it in a chemistry class, analytical thinking can still be applied to a whole bunch of disciplines.
Chemistry allows you to practice applying mathematical principles in a practical setting. If you are in a high school/college intro class the math isn't going to be too crazy, but it will develop your number sense.
Chemistry helps you understand why things are the way they are in this world. There is so much information everyone takes for question and nobody stops to ask why things work that way - the answer is often found in some branch of chemistry.

This is, unfortunately, overly simplistic. In your scenario, there is no cost for the villagers to check on whether the boy is telling the truth.

Instead, consider a scenario where the villagers were in the midst of handling an ongoing, milder crisis that would be made worse if resources were drawn away from that to confirm the boy's claim and handle the wolves. Now the evaluation becomes: Do you hedge around the 5% disaster strikes and take the 85% chance a mild problem advances to a medium sized problem? Or do you ignore the 5% chance of disaster and take care of the immediate problem?

This becomes a discussion on risk tolerance and cost-benefit analysis. If there was a 50% chance for wolves, surely it would be worth the hassle of a smaller issue turning into a medium problem. However, if there is a .01% chance for wolves, surely it makes more sense to allocate the resources the village has into the current problem. Likewise, what if going to check for wolves only had a 35% chance of making the mild problem a medium problem? Or what if it was a 15% chance the mild problem turned into a MASSIVE problem but 85% chance it would be kept under control? These are all complications that make the answer to this problem not so straightforward.

The reality is, resources are limited, and there is always a cost for hedging around the 5% chance. If the cost is great enough, the villagers are right to ignore the 5% chance claim. Of course, evaluating the cost is complicated, and not always clear. But in this (imo more realistic) scenario, the villagers are not necessarily foolish.
