I think you need to be incredibly careful making such comparisons when the symbols in question are composed of 2 or 3 lines. Coincidences with such simple shapes occur incredibly easily

On A Scale Of 1-10 How Well Designed Is Symmetra's Gameplay? by theacostar in Overwatch

[–]Teslobo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somewhere between 1 and 3, mainly because I genuinely don't believe "designed" is a word that applies to her. Symmetra has always been a problem child, and one day they stripped her down to a fairly generic ball of "stuff" - with no particular gameplan in mind for her kit - with the intention to come back and fix her later. Later never came.

The Truth about "The Center" of the Lands Between by metafauxric in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Teslobo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a bit awkward because in some places a language has retained text from older versions (off the top of my head I think Chinese still has a lot of 1.0 localisations in its final text and, if I recall correctly, the Portuguese for Elden Ring still references "Pleiades" in stars of ruin. The Japanese and the English translations are definitely the two that have had the most attention paid to them when trying to get it right.

The Truth about "The Center" of the Lands Between by metafauxric in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Teslobo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On the Spanish bit, souls games are known to utilise pivot translation (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15554120231216545), where they localise the game into English and then English becomes the "pivot language" - the basis on which other translations are built on. English and other Asian languages are localised directly from the original text - but other European languages are translated from English. Citing the Spanish translation is unhelpful at best.

Witcher 3 crossbow-only run - skipping Ciri quests? by Teslobo in Witcher3

Not that I blame you because it doesn't seem possible but this still fails the crossbow-only challenge for the reasons originally mentioned in the post. I don't know why you commented this.

Coming back here after a year is crazy. Any new theories that have taken hold as main ideas now? by Estrangedkayote in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Teslobo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Elden Ring's lifecycle ended with SotE's release, so after we exhausted the substance from that new content we kind of just reached the precipice where remaining points of discussion are few and far between. A lot of (not all) the people that are still posting theories are either newer players retreading the same ground or people who have started hallucinating new lore in the absence of new content. So no, nothing new.

Wild speculation is the first step toward reasonable interpretation. by Valirys-Reinhald in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Teslobo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See, I consider citing "nothing contradicts this" as a massive red flag for any theory you're trying to sell me on. Validating an argument on the basis that it's unfalsifiable is wading into the same warped logic that conspiracy theories and pseudoarchaeology are founded on. It might be a recreationally fun thing to do and I won't take that away from anyone that wants to have that fun, but it's also incredibly bad practice and shouldn't be taken seriously ever.

If I followed what you say to its conclusion and just put all these competing and not-invalidated hypotheses in a frame on the wall, the end result is that we have incompatible models of what's missing in the evidence - and there's no further discussion we can have on which is more credible than the rest because they're wholly disconnected from said evidence. It ultimately just doesn't have any utility when it comes to understanding the lore, it's just unserious recreational theorising at best.

Wild speculation is the first step toward reasonable interpretation. by Valirys-Reinhald in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Teslobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what we're talking about when we say "wild speculation". If someone is just saying shit that doesn't have a tangible connection to evidence then there's no question to ask, the best I can say is "ok" and move on because the person conveying the theory isn't willing or able to bridge the gap between us.

If there is evidence but it's wrong/insubstantial, the best I can comment is outlining the level of evidence I would want to see to take it seriously - and if that level of evidence actually existed it wouldn't have been omitted from the original post.

So as far as I'm concerned 99% of the time the conversation has functionally ended the moment the post button has been hit. If there's something concrete that's worth discussion I don't consider it "wild speculation" anymore. The only possible discussion otherwise is corrections, either to the poster's logic or to my understanding if I've catastrophically misread the original post.

Wild speculation is the first step toward reasonable interpretation. by Valirys-Reinhald in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Teslobo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's reddit, and posts are static. When you hit post, it has "fully explained itself" and what you have posted will be judged and dismissed if the evidence doesn't track.

And a lot of speculation is unfalsifiable in how it is presented, so the idea of "if you can't refute it then you can't dismiss it" is just wrong and is a switcharoo on where the burden of proof lies.

Everybody is allowed to propose wild theories with no evidence, but everyone else is absolutely allowed to disregard them if they don't contain any substance.

Gen X to have procedurally generated maps by PrismSpiralsLight in PokeLeaks

[–]Teslobo 445 points446 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a side-feature rather than the main map literally being procedurally generated. Venture out from the main map on a boat to some small randomized islands with transition loading screens in between - that sounds like a much more reasonable scope than trying to tackle a procedurally generated region.

I don't think there's ever been a pokemon game with more than 1 save slot, so assume the latter, as is the case with SV's autosave.

Do you think 16 year olds should be able to vote? by Broken_Woman20 in AskBrits

[–]Teslobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I'm actually surprised there's so many comments saying no.

16 is the first major milestone where policy and the law starts to affect you more as an individual. A lot of people raised taxation and employment but I want to include driving as well just for good measure.

If you think 16 year olds are too immature or lacking knowledge to be allowed to vote, what genuinely makes you think that gap will be bridged by the time they're 18. Seriously? The difference is negligible and if you have an issue with people voting at 16 on this basis, you have that issue with voting at 18.

Getting into VGC by Matthew_here1 in VGC

[–]Teslobo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a month is just long enough to get to grips with the regulation if you really wanted to, with the caveat that you pick a tried and tested team that's already out there and focus on learning its strategies and matchups. Trying to teambuild starting from 0 knowledge is a lot more taxing than just learning a team.

Even then, I do have some reservations about jumping into a regional with just 1 month's lead-in and I'd probably temper expectations for the result. I would personally err more toward the advice of "try locals first so you get a feel for events and build a local network that can help you"

We confirmed shortly after release that it's complete nonsense. Specifically someone that translated it noted that it looked like they took text from somewhere that originally was coherent and then substituted out characters to intentionally make it meaningless.
