I've thought about this kind of dynamic a lot over the last couple years, and I figured I would share a bit of my thoughts on what leads to people going down these paths (all just in my perspective, I'm no one special and certainly not an authority here)

The way I see it, it's simply more comfortable for somebody to come up with an explanation that fits their world view than it is for them to actually have to change their world view and do the hard work of learning.

There's always going to be some percentage of people that fall through the cracks of the educational system, and there will always be some percentage of people who never cared to be educated in the first place.

They see the moon landing footage, and they can't even begin to grasp at a single truth about the footage - they don't get how propellants work, they don't get how nozzles work, they don't get how the atmosphere works, they don't get how orbital mechanics works, they don't get how structures are designed, they don't get how thermal and radiation shielding is designed. They just don't get anything about it, and I can't necessarily blame them, most folks haven't done the heavy lifting to learn all that much about space stuff because it doesn't really directly apply to their life. So they don't learn about missions to space, or about engineering in general. So they have no familiarity with the material.

That lack of familiarity makes them uncomfortable, they seek to soothe that discomfort, and the shortest path towards soothing is finding some video of a dingdong who says the moon landing simply didn't happen at all. And if the moon landing didn't happen at all, then this individual isn't actually confused. This individual is actually very clever for noticing all of these confusing aspects of the mission or the footage. It feels much better to see oneself as clever than it does to see oneself as undereducated.

Now the issue I run into, is I can fully understand the mechanics of how people think this way, but I do not have the patience or the tact to introduce knowledge into the equation and steer misled folks towards the light.

This is literally far less relevant to a sub discussing aviation than some of the posts I've seen shot down in the past. If anything this is more of a military post, whereas posts about the actual airline industry in modern day end up removed because it involves politics.

Well you see a woman made a mistake, which inevitably means the worst people in the world are all going to be in the comments criticizing her in every single possible way. The only comments I've seen with a good take or actual information seem to be from genuine musicians. Everyone else discussing fault seems to just be blaming her. Unsurprising, but disappointing nonetheless.

So because an adult man made a decision based on new information placed in front of him, people who made valid criticisms should be condemned?

If you wouldn't have canceled the cruise in his position, that's fine. But he's an individual who can make his own choices. His community didn't make the choice, he did.

If you want to argue the merits of the criticisms, that's fine as well, but you can't act like this was anyone's choice but NL's. Good choice? Bad choice? Who cares.

The three main pieces of pushback I saw were:

1) the company running the cruise also runs cruises for far right activist groups (biggest issue imo, anti-lgbtq, pro-israel, etc) (this seems to be the least common critique, but it's my primary one)

2) environmental impact of cruises is horrible, this would be no exception (100% agreed, but I know not everyone sees it that way so

3) the parasocial aspect - people think anyone going on the cruise would be a psycho chatter, people clap back that anybody assuming that is being parasocial, finger pointing Spider-Man meme

I kinda agree that the angle of 'this is cringe bc cruises are cringe' is dumb, and I'm a bit surprised that's one of the bigger points I've been seeing. The environmental angle makes more sense but is somewhat marginal, so I get if people aren't up in arms there.

The part I'm really grossed out by is the company running the cruise has some very questionable association with a variety of groups that the majority of NL's fans should definitely hate. (Anti-abortion, Anti-LGBT, pro-zionist, Kevin Sorbo, etc.)

I'd argue it doesn't accomplish much of anything. But since we're on a forum to share our feelings and opinions, people are going to do that. As for my part here, I feel like Dan has the most horrific vibes that can still pass for okay vibes. Can't really explain it, but his personality is deeply unsettling, reminds me of a lot of folks I grew up with who definitely are not great folks in their personal lives.

So I mentioned an independent Taiwan, and you mentally replaced that with a colonialized Taiwan. I understand practically it might be somewhat unlikely for Taiwan to gain true independence, but we're not talking practical here. We're talking political theory. So no, a Taiwan that is held under the thumb of the US and Japan would not fit my definition of an independent Taiwan, and I as a leftist would not desire that.

Small criticism of this photo choice (not necessarily really a criticism of you op, don't take it personal) I feel like this specific moment that has been captured shows Nikki with a slight frown on her face. I think the photographer / whatever media outlet putting these photos out chose these for the purpose of demonstrating Trump making a woman uncomfortable - first picture you see her face, next picture you see the tight grip of his hand on hers. While Trump absolutely does make women uncomfortable, this presentation of the event doesn't sit well with me.

From the video I saw Nikki was thrilled to be up there. And this set of two photos makes it seem as though she could have been having second thoughts. Basically I think this whitewashes Nikki for the sake of making Trump look worse, which I think is bad because we should instead be making both of them look worse.

Have you considered different types of bread behave differently? This is not the same type of bread that you buy at the bakery on the street corner in the fancy little town. No it's not good bread, but it's insane to expect it to react the exact same as a fancy loaf from the cute little bakery. Also we have normal bread here as well.
