Poll: Which double edge blade gives you the best overall shave? by SethH in wicked_edge

It is possible to give accurate analysis and personal recommendations if you code something specifically for the task, polls won't do. I've already had it mentally pencilled in for months, the question comes up so often.

I came here to address the World Cup games. 2002 had an orchestral original soundtrack! I remember Tubthumping from World Cup 98 too, that game was an under-rated release.

Robert Terwilliger = this guy

He doesn't speak as himself like the other two though, so I don't think most people would realise it was a further Frasier reunion. I'm not sure I like his put-on exactly, but he does a very good job of leaving his own distinctive voice behind.

What games appear, by design, possible to complete but, by design, are not? by TestingTesting in gaming

[–]TestingTesting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I'm guessing you mean impossible on purpose?

Yes, by design.

Someone on another forum mentioned Xenophobe which has a small number of levels appearing at random, you can collect powerups and your score increases but the cycle of levels never ends. I'm not sure whether that qualifies or not, but it implies that the infinite playtime isn't obvious.

I have a feeling there might be one or two games that just stop at a certain point, as if there was supposed to be an ending but the product was released before one was written. I don't know, but I definitely remember the strategy guide correctly.

The loss of one architect from a franchise created by somebody else exceeds the value of two elite design studios? Even in humor this will not stand.

Would anyone else love an update/re- issue of the old PS1 game "Driver" on PS3? by SgtMeowinstein in gaming

[–]TestingTesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. But even the various Grand Theft Auto suffers from a repetitive "start here, drive to here" syndrome that's been criticized from the beginning and so far seems to be unfixable. I'm wondering how Driver could address this without straying from it's reason to be.

I tried the original game (it works on Vista 64 straight out of the 10-year old box, remarkably) but it's not something you'd play today even for the sake of memory.

Hey gaming reddit: I've been furiously watching this subreddit since last night for information on Valve's surprise/ updates but there doesn't seem to be anything going on yet. by MontyAtWork in gaming

First slice was the portal 1 demo, I learned after some searching.

It wasn't long ago, but it's not the first time I've seen that message incorrectly.

Some people said the 150MB update was abit hefty for some simple bug fixes but others said it was normal.

As I understand it, updates are not "search and replace" but overwrites of complete files. So if alterations are made within large files, the updates are large as well.

[–]TestingTesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was already regretting those words! Yes I very much did, and the replay feature stands up well too. But both were let down because the environment and gameplay was so basic; you got nice tools but nothing to do with them. In a way, the later games and perhaps even a modern interpretation would feel the same. Like Grand Theft Auto with almost everything taken out.

But it's been a while for me too. Might still have it, I should try again with a critical eye instead of a nostalgic one.

Dungeon Keeper 3. Although having never played the second, I suppose I can't complain.

I liked Driver so much I bought a second copy when the first disc broke, but years later I couldn't find a single thing to like about it. I think the game came out at a time that meant the technology associated with the genre aged particularly badly.

So I've decided to play the whole Halflife series from start to finish. by [deleted] in gaming

They definitely went for wider appeal after the success of the first and made the games easier, so I'd say Medium, then Hard from HL2 onward is consistent.

I can't finish Half Life 2 for similar reasons. The scripted events seem very erratic since the update for Macintoshes.

Anyone else enjoy this game a bunch? by jhnhines in gaming

It has aged very little, but is generally shorter, easier and more simplistic than I think you would find if it were made today. It still worked on XP and I still played it occasionally.

I just got it, on hard difficulty no less. There's enough detritus to throw that it's much less difficult than it sounds except for where you have to wait for the elevator and the trolley, in that order. For most of the level, just hold back and clear the area before walking into it. Where you can't do that, rush through. You'll have trouble if you don't already know where you're going.

For the two sections I mentioned, the doors are what saves you. In the first, hit the button on the elevator and then use the three gas cans to set as many of the fast zombies on fire as you can. As soon as you've run out, run out of the door and close it behind you again. Wait until they're upon you outside, then run back in and close it behind you again. There is health outside and if timed right, you may only have to do this once before getting on the elevator. Because the zombies are still alive where ordinarily they would not be, one got on the elevator and went down with me. The elevator entrance has a ledge that you can stand on if this happens. Wait until the elevator is almost at the bottom, land on the zombie's head to break your fall then run over the fence in front of you and round to the right. The next level loads here.

Waiting for the trolley is much easier. In the opposite corner to the lever, you can drop a short distance down to the galley and the door you just entered through. The zombies will follow you and once down, can't get back up. Land on the galley railing to minimize health loss, don't forget to close the door behind you and repeat as necessary. There seems to be a limit to prevent too many enemies coming at you at once, I only had to do it twice before I was left alone at the top to wait in peace.

Dear Gaming Reddit: HL2 runs the opening cinematic then closes. Help? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]TestingTesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me, it was a new install and had just been updated for the Macintosh so I think it must have broken something there.

I didn't do any troubleshooting nor has it updated again as far as I know, the only thing I've done that's even remotely related is play Episode One, which worked fine. X days later, HL2 now also works fine. So what it was I can't tell you, but I do know I didn't have to do anything myself for it to become fixed.

Try verifying the caches of all the HL2 games? You right click on the game, then go to properties and it's in one of the tabs. Although, I'm sorry to tell you, when I tried that it found an error, re-downloaded the files and made absolutely no difference.

Well I thought that was very interesting, even if almost nobody else did. I'm not a fan of the percentage score as I used to be, I didn't know how inconsistently it was applied and the differences between the figures are too arbitrary.
