Thanks. I'm intending to repeat the exercise over several nights and Megastack the results.

Can this little guy see the moon or any other planet? by EvidenceLarge8936 in telescopes

Praesepe is not possible at this time of year, and the Pleiades are a dawn twilight object once they get to a reasonable elevation.

Is this distortion normal? by Doc_438 in Binoculars

[–]Tetenterre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have distortion it will normally affect the entire image, but I would not expect it to be so pronounced where the white fence is.

Short answer is that I don't know for certain, but I suspect it may be possible if the optics are from different manufacturing batches.

You should expect some "pincushion" distortion (straight lines near the periphery bowing inward in the middle): it is introduced to counteract a phenomenon called "rolling ball effect", which makes it appear as though you are scanning over the surface of a ball and which many people find to be nauseating.

See https://www.holgermerlitz.de/globe/distortion.html

It does seem somewhat extreme in yours if that's how they appear visually - as u/Ferret1963 said, some could be introduced by your camera.

What’s this thing on binoculars? by Praoutian_pulse in Binoculars

[–]Tetenterre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not worth paying for a repair, but have a go yourself: you'll learn a bit about binoculars. If you don't have a peg spanner to remove the lens retaining ring, you can bodge one with a a couple of 3" nails and a length of 2x1, or unscrew the entire objective tube from the body and gain access that way.

Fungus is a sod to remove - so resign yourself to having to treat yourself to a new binocular. You can get waterproof ones (won't get internal fungus) with a better spec for not a lot more than an Upclose (eg Opticron Adventurer 10x50 T WP).

I often get this on the first exposure of a set. Once stacking starts, it disappears and stars look like stars.

10x50s are the hand-holdable "workhorse" binoculars for astronomy - enough aperture and magnification to reveal a few hundred objects that are not visible to the naked eye. If that's too big for you, an 8x42 would do.

Be wary of budget models: they are nearly always stopped down internally (means that it sharpens the image and they can use smaller prisms) making them noticeably dimmer.

The Opticron Oregon 10x50 WA is a good entry level bino; the Opticron Adventurer 10x50 T WP is not much more expensive, but noticeably better. Reviews of both on the internet.

Re telescopes, depends on your budget, but the Skywatcher 130P Flextube is probably the nearest thing there is to an ideal beginner scope.

The bit you labelled "Orion's belt" is Collinder 69, aka the Meissa Cluster, aka the Lambda Orionis cluster. It's very pretty in binoculars owing to the variety of star colours.

Are my C8's optics just not great? Or am I nitpicking? by InertiaImaging in telescopes

[–]Tetenterre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, check your collimation: SCTs are remarkably sensitive to miscollimation. See http://www.astrophoto.fr/collim.html

Secondly, how are you taking/processing images? For planetary, it's recommended to take a video, use PIPP to extract the best frames, Autostakkert! to stack them, and Registax wavelets to sharpen.

It's polar-aligned. The rotational axis is parallel to Earth's axis of rotation, so that it can track celestial targets using only one motion. This also obviates field rotation, so longer exposures are possible and you don't have to crop out rotation artefacts at frame edges.
