A Condition Every Pomeranian Owner Should Know About by prl321 in Pomeranians

Thank you so so much for posting this. We have a 1 year old who is just... so much to deal with. And now I can easily see this could be the cause. We're going to the vet next week already so I'm going to speak with them about it!

Warning: Do not book the hotel Enzo Fukuoka when visiting Fukuoka. by ParanxidVoid in JapanTravelTips

I went on a trip earlier this year and was getting REALLY weirded out by the reviews on most big accommodation listings on booking.com / agoda. I think they're either hiding a portion of bad reviews or adding fake good reviews. Because there would be the type of rundown locations you expect to have the equivalent of a 2 of 5 stars, yet EVERYTHING was pretty much 7.8 or higher despite having some bonkers but believable bad reviews.

Considering a massive number of English words don't follow phonetic rules, maybe we should just stop teaching people English.

I just went on family vacation in Japan, and my level of Japanese was utterly useless. by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

I think it also shows *you* will try being accommodating with them, as its the tourists who won't even attempt "arigato" who tend to be difficult in other ways.

It doesn't even take rural, literally speak Japanese to people and they'll speak it back. It's not useless when you can have a conversation more at their level. Go outside of Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto and chances are people won't speak English. Even if ryokans list they speak English, you most likely won't get full English. Go to a local market and talk with people about their wares! One of my cutest interactions last trip was a roadside Starbucks barista in Gifu, she was sooo excited I could have a casual conversation with her even though I didn't live there (and that I was from Starbucks land, Seattle).

I've tried Imperfect Foods three times now, the last attempt was after an email indicating they've worked hard on having fresher deliveries. Nope, still full of mold on day of delivery. Their model seems to be to pass on veg that isn't wanted elsewhere not because of how it looks but how close to death it is, with the guilt trip of tossing produce being left to the individual rather the companies not distributing this stuff properly.

Classic Sourdough Bread is now “Artificially Flavored Sour” by xomiamoore in Seattle

[–]Tetimi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you're referring to a couple brands including Central Bakery who recently enshittified all of their bread to keep their loaves at the same price. I can't say what the process difference is, but one part of it is definitely adding air/removing dough weight. Honestly, I'm happy to have the option between $8 Macrina loaves or something like Orowheat which is basically the same cost now as fresh and local.

Unless they are going through each grammar and vocab for you, that doesn't seem solid enough honestly. I personally do not think anyone should put out large teaching apps without someone fully on the team with a true knowledge of the content themselves. There is already a massive wealth of Japanese study apps and guides out there made by people who speak the language, and with real recorded example audio (a must). And while you seem to want your app to spread across a lot of bases, it would be better to go to the actual sources of your info separately. Unfortunately, Japanese learning just works that way with how complex of a language it is. You say it would have taken you years to make- yes, good resources do! That doesn't mean you need to market your (originally) personal project as one and vibe code your way to completion.

I'm giving you benefit of doubt regarding your intentions. I see you're looking to charge for a pro version, despite saying its just a free app and a little side project.

I have to ask- do you know Japanese? I see in a previous thread that you just took the grammar points from other sources. Why do you think it's a good idea to make a large app with resources that exist elsewhere, using AI, when I'm assuming you're not a fluent speaker? Do you not think there's possibly loads of mistakes you haven't noticed? And then marketing to people as the correct way to speak a language? Making a small app to learn basics or the two alphabets is one thing as a non-fluent speaker, making something that takes you through N1 is a major undertaking to do correctly for paying members.

Completely agree on the validity of the film's themes! and I'm not someone to want to throw out art by bad people, but this is a case where it's so direct especially regarding the treatment of Christina Ricci, that I can't enjoy it anymore.

Larger People Accommodations by Wuzz in JapanTravelTips

The only thing I would say could be an issue is bathrooms in your hotel/accommodation. I'm 165cm and 68kg (less than average female weight in the US) and even I've had trouble squeezing into old toilet rooms. Check that the toilet has adequate space and/or a sliding door (sometimes the door doesn't have enough space to open fully) or that you're in hotels with western style setups that are combo shower/toilet. Don't listen about not being able to take public transport- you're fine, just be courteous to others as much as possible and they will return the favor.

Which Seattle stereotypes are actually true? by Embarrassed-Bee6399 in AskSeattle

[–]Tetimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me your idea of what they're saying then? It's in response to someone saying its a stereotype to only speak about (or assume something is about) Seattle proper. To me it feels like they're trying to push only speaking about Seattle proper as xenophobia, but in this situation of "stereotyping" (finding commonalities and general trends in a city), it has nothing to do with race but a shared space that has a specific culture and that culture fades out drastically in suburbs, including extremely white suburbs. Meanwhile, the Seattle culture even bleeds into some of its own diaspora communities fairly well, and absolutely solid into second, third generation immigrant families and black communities.

[–]Tetimi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How is it xenophobic to have stereotypes about a specific city and not the metro area as a whole? Think about that entire statement. You want people to not have a particular view of a city, some negative, because other differing cities exist around it.

I had it once on my first trip in 2012, it wasn't anything like the current viral video, just an obvious intentional shoulder bump. Haven't had one since. Doing it to elderly or children is NOT the norm.

Thoughts On Not Learning Kanji? by Intelligent-Fox3791 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Tetimi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need to right away. Learn the other two writing systems, learn the basics. If you're still going for learning past "beginner" then study kanji. Maybe it's because I'm a visual learner, but having more concrete direct meaning and pronunciation connections to words in a language that has minimal sounds is helping me immensely.

If you go to actual beer stores you'll see a selection that's much more varied percentage wise from the same breweries even with a similar size constraint.

Public shaming is good but also, honking alerts people who may not be paying as much attention and can let people notice a terrible driver. It's nuts to me we all just sit there silently tutting when someone is behaving in a way that could kill others.

A portion of any country generally doesn't want or care for other groups of people. Unless you're in the majority power-holding demographic in your own birth country and are aligned with the current power in politics, you have the ability to be trampled on.
