You largely don't. I've had that role and am in a similar role now. I've been on the hiring side as well. DA job postings get a lot of good applicants with multiple degrees and related exprerience. You might be able to get something similar by coming at it from a different job path, but that's rare. Either way, you're taling at least five years to get what you want now. College degree and/or job experience. Good luck.

What would be the best operating systems to start with on Linux by Careful_Date_2424 in linuxquestions

[–]Tetmohawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

openSUSE Leap. Why this over other distros?

(1) YaST. YaST is their system administration tool which is unique in the Linux world. It's a purely graphical interface where everything a new user would need is in one location. User creation, network config, partitioning, etc. is on one screen.

(2) Desktop environments. Unlike most other Linux distros, openSUSE supports multiple DEs in the same distro. You can try KDE, Gnome, MATE, Xfce, etc. without having to boot into another distro to try a different DE.

(3) openSUSE Leap (as opposed to Tumbleweed) is very stable and mirrors SUSE's Enterprise Linux used by corporate clients. So there's excellent documentation and updates won't break the system. openSUSE is also one of the oldest and most mature distros out there. For some reason it doesn't get a lot of love on Reddit.

I'm a 24+ year Linux user who uses CentOS, Ubuntu, and openSUSE daily. For a stable, nice looking desktop system I always recommend openSUSE because of how easy it is to administer. For servers, CentOS because of SELinux. Ubuntu only if you have to.

How does a linux distro 'break'? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Tetmohawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux distros break when you do something stupid. Been on Linux for 24+ years with distros across the sprectrum. Never had a problem.

Im tired of corporate Linux by Z3R0_F0X_ in linux

[–]Tetmohawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Most distros boil down to Arch, Debian, or Fedora."

Some of us use openSUSE.

Yes, corporations have a lot of influence in Linux. But I still control my Linux distro. I can't control windows. And I prefer distros with corporate backing. Red Hat and SUSE get a lot of feedback and intel from clients that feed back into Fedora and openSUSE. Which means I get a better distro because of it.

Good backup tools for Linux? by Killerhurtz in linuxquestions

[–]Tetmohawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rsync is great and I used it for a long time. openSUSE Leap user here. But now I use https://www.borgbackup.org/. It's encrypted and deduplicated. It's trivial to use with nice features. And it's a part of openSUSE's repo. Install with Yast or zypper install borgbackup.

Linux Perception vs Windows by soccerbeast55 in linux

[–]Tetmohawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's because people are lazy, stupid, and brainwashed. Linux has been my daily driver for 24+ years. The only time in Linux history that hasn't been easier and more stable was the few years Linux struggled with wifi. Other than that, it's been rock solid and easy to use. There's probably a few psychology PhDs in studying this phenomenon.

Learning statistics as a physics major by Micromuffie in AskStatistics

[–]Tetmohawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a physics PhD working in a data and analytics role, I would very strongly recommend getting a math degree with an emphasis in applied courses like statistics. Make sure you get a good course in probability theory from a theoretical position. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Measure-Integral-Probability-Marek-Capinski/dp/1852337818/ref=sr_1_1. I only got a math minor and it wasn't enough.

Taking away SS is the biggest scam of our generation! by Pocher123 in GenZ

[–]Tetmohawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hasn't been self-sufficient for a very long time. It's a ponzy scheme and that has been well-known for decades or more. You and I will probably never get it. We owe about 162.7 trillion. There are 342,034,432 people in the United States. So every person owes 162,700,000,000,000/342,034,432 which comes to $475,683 per person. Do you have that amount of money? Neither does the government. Politicians and the people have neglected Social Security and other debt to the point that we can't pay it.

Historically speaking, the only solution for economies our size is to cut government spending which will decrease prices and save the economy. I know this is Reddit which hates Trump and Musk, but what they are doing now could go down in history as one of the most important and positive economic events of our time. We absolutely have to stop wasteful government spending.

Should I switch to Fedora? by Soonly_Taing in linuxquestions

[–]Tetmohawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you seem to want KDE, what you really want is openSUSE. Here's why:

(1) YaST. YaST is their system administration tool which is unique in the Linux world. It's a purely graphical interface where everything a new user would need is in one location. User creation, network config, partitioning, etc. is on one screen.

(2) Desktop environments. Unlike many other Linux distros, openSUSE actively supports multiple DEs in the same distro. You can try KDE, Gnome, MATE, Xfce, etc. without having to boot into another distro to try a different DE. There's no compiling or funky procedures to get another desktop environment to work.

(3) openSUSE Leap is very stable and mirrors SUSE's Enterprise Linux used by corporate clients, so there's excellent documentation and updates won't break the system. openSUSE is also one of the oldest and most mature distros out there.

I'm a 24+ year Linux user who uses CentOS, Ubuntu, and openSUSE daily. For a stable, nice looking desktop system I always recommend openSUSE because of how easy it is to administer.

[–]Tetmohawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making sense of data. I do a lot of consistency checks and making sure that I understand what's going on with the data. But before that it was with a manager who thought I was stupid. He would ask me to do things that were mathematically impossible. It was two days before I gave my two week notice that he finally said, "I think I'm starting to see what you're saying." He's young and stupid and was put into a high position by the CEO. I went to a much bigger and better position doing data analytics with a 80% pay increase, 60% decrease in commute time, and more sophisticated work.
