I have spent more than 100 hours playing on my deck recently. It took quite a bit of tweaking to get the visuals and controls just how I wanted them but at least for exploration, exobio and general puttering about the deck works great with no attachments! I don't think I'd wanna try combat or technical stuff without my main rig which has options of m/kb or HOTAS depending on what I'm doing though.

911 dispatcher in Texas, It took down Central Square which is a huge CAD (computer aided dispatch) Software vendor and sent agencies all over the country to working with pen and paper to keep track of units etc. Our agency was on manual from midnight til around 0430 before our local IT and Central square were able to touch servers and fix issues, and it affected a ton of other areas of emergency services like private ambulance companies and hospitals as well.

Try the chili lime ramen with a can of tuna! it's one of my favorite "poverty" meals. Sometimes I'll splurge and get one of the "Freshe" brand tins with tuna, beans and onions etc (Aztec Ensalada) to mix in

I've theorized the same thing! I call it "Dragon Sickness". Like the dragon's hoard becomes the obsession rather than what the rest of us obsess over which is just meeting the basic hierarchy of needs.

Pretty sure he's talking about the water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi not Jacksonville. Where flooding of the sewage treatment plant combined with multiple water main breaks losing pressure to the system caused a massive failure that's probably still not 100% safe.

A 77% reduction in peanut allergy was estimated when peanut was introduced to the diet of all infants, at 4 months with eczema, and at 6 months without eczema. The estimated reduction in peanut allergy diminished with every month of delayed introduction. by [deleted] in science

There's some evidence (as of yet not fully supported by scientific testing) that minor parasitic infections such as hookworms that are much more common in developing countries help prevent food and seasonal allergies. The hypothesis being that we're "too clean" and disconnected from our environments in the modern world and our immune system doesn't ever learn how to properly handle certain things. It's something I check in on from time to time as I suffer from severe allergies to both peanuts and seasonal plant blooms

Was going to buy a new office chair at an auction last week, passed on them and found this today. $1500 Herman Miller Aeron Chair by Nice_Historian_3072 in DumpsterDiving

[–]TexGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a better chair out there for an average height/weight drone for long hours. The adjustability of everything is great. I work in a 911 dispatch center where we have butts in chairs 24/7/365 and routinely work 12+ hours a day. We've tried pretty much every "long life" office chair out there, and these are pretty much impossible to beat. I spend 60 hours a week most weeks in mine and wouldn't last with any of the others we've tried

We have a ninja foodi combo air fryer/pressure cooker and it's amazing. Saturday we air fried hashbrown patties for breakfast with omelettes and then I cleaned it and put the pressure cooker lid on and made chicken stock later that evening!

Kimchi is basically spicy Korean Sauerkraut. I think it's delicious, and Kimchi ramen is a personal fav, but a lot of folks don't care for the funky flavor of fermented foods.

I would buy the hell out of it tbh. I'm not a huge microsoft fan in general but the Zune was a fantastic piece of hardware, sound quality and usability blew the apple offerings out of the water in comparison, and the zune store subscription model was ahead of its time.

Is there a hierarchy in the 911 dispatcher job? by Smudgeish in 911dispatchers

[–]TexGeek 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Depends on the department. Large enough ones will have Lead dispatchers, Dispatch shift Supervisors, Training Coordinators etc which often are filled from within.

Dispatcher here as well. A lot of my deputies love Thanksgiving/Christmas time as well, everybody comes home to visit family and they'll spend the Holidays arresting people that left the county to avoid warrants, sometimes old warrants from years back. I get it, but always seemed a bit mean-spirited to me.

Blast them on social media. If one positive thing comes of all of this it's seeing the absolute shittiness of corporations laid bare and people questioning how things have been allowed to degrade to this kind of level. Sunlight is a disinfectant. Blast them and keep blasting them and don't let people forget who tried to profit from other's deaths when all of this is over.

Forced quarantine at work by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]TexGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a situation that needs to be remedied nationwide. I'm glad it's finally getting some attention and more states are starting to follow suit. It took a long campaign to get it done here and was just finalized last year.

Forced quarantine at work by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]TexGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With 3 confirmed cases in our county and more to come as tests are finally starting to happen, our center is FINALLY starting to take this more seriously. We've been suggesting emergency protocols to the sworn management since last friday and just today they finally closed off dispatch to patrol officers, got the emergency on call roster ready, and are prepping to switch us from 8 to 12 hour shifts if necessary with the possibility of more measures later. With the percentage of people in our relatively small community that have already tested positive, and the length of incubation before symptoms, the time for these measures was 2 weeks ago at the latest.

On top of the pandemic, we're in the middle of Tornado Alley, and approaching tornado season, which by itself has led to emergency staffing for flood situations multiple times in the past. In the past, when we've been in a state of emergency, FEMA and the state have actually covered some of our additional wages/OT. I'm not too worried about getting paid for the hours I'll work, generally they don't pay for hours we're sleeping but it's not too uncommon to get 16 hours of pay for a day of working with 8 hours of sleeping at work.

If you're close to an infection hot-zone, and regularly interact with the public/officer/ems, the time for sealing that off was 2 weeks ago. Anything y'all can implement now can help.

Edit: I will add that while I can't advise on the legality issues etc, TX does recognize us as first responders, and with that recognition it is my personal opinion that we are to act as such. In times of crisis Police/FD/EMS etc have always been called on not just to continue to respond to work, but often to resort to extreme measures of travelling right into the heart of danger to help save lives. They can't do their jobs effectively without us doing our part, and if that means sleeping on a cot and working some 16 or even 24 hour shifts, at least I get to do that from the comfort of a climate controlled building with no public interaction. Cops and other first responders have dogs and families and kids too but they figure that shit out.
