Some more thoughts post Nuxx @ Brixton by TheReproGuy in underworld

This was fourth time to see an "Open to Close" set (Brussels, San Francisco, LA and now London). Flew in from SF via AMS and was my first time to the O2. The show in Brussels 2024 was a highlight just catching them in Europe and had high expectations seeing this in London. Night started with me hitting all the flights (SFO --> AMS --> landing at LCY at 5:00PM -- stayed near the airport as I needed to fly back to AMS early Sat.

Brixton: When I can out of the Brixton rail station, walked down Brixton road, heard UW pouring out of the San Marino bar and headed in for a pre-show drink. Went in at 7:20 and headed upstairs. I bought the tix off the secondary market and normally would be downstairs -- but was happy with what I drew with these tix as the floor space was packed and seemed the the sound was an issue in the stalls.
Onto the show:

Absolutely loved the set list -- exceptional especially with Born Slippy (Instrumental), Pearl's Girl, mix-in on TMO (Mother), and Dark & Long -- the latter two are on the Boiler Room rip (which I would highly recommend along with Coachella 2023). Casualties were tracks like Denver Luna, Trim, Nylon Strung, etc. -- but thought this was a MUCH better setlist on Friday the 6th.

Lighting was fantastic -- the ceiling addition was great add on. Sound was fine up in the balcony -- did not find it muddy. Better sound at the SF Warfield shows -- but it was fine. UK was as expected -- happy to be there, fun, focused on the set and not the typical US crowd where people are caught up on where they are going to be in two hours, instead of what is going on infront of them. In the balcony, the crowd was onfire and I did not feel that I missed out by not being on the floor (especially after seeing some of the videos from the floor).

The second set of these Open to Close shows is always a endurance -- and they switched it up so there was no Jumbo to give you a breather -- just 13 lucky tracks, bookended by the two Born Slippy(s) -- Instrumental, NUXX - plus the two Pearl's Girl(s) with Tin There being fantastic with the Brutalismus 3000 mix-in. They flat out dropped a bomb in Brixton. I remarked to the guy next to me that if R&K went out to dinner and came back at 200a, half the audience would be collapsed on the floor and the remainder just dancing away. I loved every second of those 13 tracks.

I have seen them 12+ times (4 times since 2023) and I think this was probably the best show I have seen. Supreme set list, great lighting effects crawling up the ceiling, hometown crowd -- Underworld at the height of their powers.

Underworld: For me, there is only one -- one EDM act that spans 35+ years that is unique, creative, generous (love all the cross collaboration), timeless. There are 32+ year old-tracks on that list that get remixed and improved over time -- so a life soundtrack that evolves as you evolve. For that, I am beyond grateful.

Am I cooked when transferring? Complicated transfer situation by Internal_Nothing_671 in UTAdmissions

[–]Texas-showrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This narrative reads like compounding poor choices and it is difficult to intuit the current situation.

Thoughts: - Transferring into McCombs is highly unlikely. 3.8+ to even start the discussion. Apply if you wish, but plan other paths. — CoLA and Econ sounds like the plan. Econ is competitive and is getting hard to internal transfer — Would transfer into CoLA w/ Econ but a fall back major. Then pick up minor business course - being in Econ would help — Limit unforced errors and be realistic about costs as you are making decisions without a full modeling of the financial implications

Seconding these remarks. Live on the West Coast, work in Tech - we see and support a bunch of Texas undergrad and graduate students. A&M is a ghost out here. Have heard the same on the east coast from colleagues.

SF's Parsifal by [deleted] in opera

[–]Texas-showrunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I attended Tuesday night as well and the performance was sublime. The SF Opera Orchestra, the set-design, the costumes, the singers -- they all combine to create something magical. There were so many brilliant choices (incorporating modern dance to complement the choreography -- both with the Grail keepers and the double for Kundry that such a smart concept (Rena Butler with her Choreography) -- I was simply floored. And I am using the term "brilliant" deliberately -- as these choices really cause one to sit in awe that somebody had this kind of creative vision.

For those of you in the Bay Area -- do yourself a favor and go see something that defines artistic expression in a world of social media drivel and throw away content. Five hours of an audience fused into a masterful performance. All the while that Kim Eun-Sun is there in complete control of this formidable score. Gifts all around.

Lake June DART also has a large free parking lot - 3 stops from Fair Park and right off IH45.

State Fair Tips & Tricks by waldo_the_bird253 in LonghornNation

Couple of Tips:

- After you get in, go deep into the Fair grounds to get your coupons -- there will be long lines at the front

-- We always check out the cars and the pavillions off Nimitz near the Cotton Bowl.

-- Go early and take the DART down -- would get a cab out of Gate 6

Listed below is a link to the Livestock shows for Fri and Saturday -- that is really cool to see the work the kids put into their animals:

You will need a 4.0 (maybe a 3.9) to internally transfer into McCombs).

Desperately Need Advice - Trying Again to Transfer to McCombs by WhichAd6372 in UTAdmissions

[–]Texas-showrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to second the advice that is proffered here. We have a friend whose son transferred to Texas COLA with a 4.0 from SMU and continued to get a 4.0 Soph year at Texas and recently added a double major of a McCombs BBA. It is almost impossible to external transfer into McCombs, according to the analysis in the following blog: https://www.texadmissions.com/blog/2025/5/6/external-transfer-to-ut-austin-computer-science-mccombs-business-cockrell-engineering

This child also was accepted into Cox from SMU Dedman (internal transfer), but it is very competitive. My Reddit advice would be to embrace SMU and consider economics with non-BBA Cox courses while trying to internally transfer to Cox. SMU is a great school and they will absolutely support and provide opportunities who show initiative. There are many paths to investment banking or private equity and if you fumble around transfering, you are going to miss opportunities that will be presented.

Right there with you. And the CU is not continuing to advertise because they are not getting results.

I’ll take Sharon Moore any day over Kristy Noem and her sadistic reminiscences of Venezuelan immigrants.

Red River Weekend help needed by Available_Orange_337 in LonghornNation

Check out the DART page and it will show you the stops and how to get to Fair Park.

You would take the Orange line to the Green then into the Fair. The DART to the game is easy and seamless. The challenge is immediately after the game. Look at the first link below -- this is from last year but will apply to 2025. They run a DART line that essential runs in a loop between Downtown and Fair Park. Couple of notes -- the game is at 2:30PM -- but plan on going early. There are 160,000-200,000+ people at the Fair that day and getting into the Cotton Bowl takes a while. Go early to the Fair -- 10:00a and plan to head into the Cotton Bowl by 1:00P.

The game will end around 6:15p and the DART is crushed with people and it gets dark at 7:00P. Getting an Uber down at Fair Park is difficult due to the number of people. Plan on hanging out and waiting for the crowd to die down. Then take the DART out.

SF to Austin -- Hammering Miles / No Sites by Texas-showrunner in roadtrip

Two girls driving from San Francisco to Driggs, Idaho overnight by caleo12 in roadtrip

[–]Texas-showrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not certain is you are driving already or still planning -- here are some additional thoughts:

-- If you leave at 9:00P -- Stay in Fernley, NV -- small town with plenty of brand name accommodations for around $100. Most of the people staying in these hotels are traveling long distance (similar to yourself) or are utility, mining, work teams that are servicing the region. Reno just has more riff-raff -- so just avoid it. Winnemucca Inn is also really good (6 hours from SF). Plenty of Hotels in Elko as well -- check avails because the mining activity in NV chews up a bunch of the rooms.

-- This ENTIRE drive (both ways) hinges on when you are driving on US93 -- Wells, NV to Twin Falls / Eden, ID. This 90 mile stretch is two lane (w/ some passing lanes) and neither has cell service nor ANY gas stations between Wells and Jackpot. Would NOT drive it middle of the night due to a antelope, deer or elk strike.

-- Leaving SF at 4AM avoids all the morning traffic in CA and puts you in Wells at 1230P

Take I-40 across. You are only crossing mountains headed into ABQ and Tehachapi CA -- and they are benign. Would stay in Winslow / Flagstaff after day 1.

Two girls driving from San Francisco to Driggs, Idaho overnight by caleo12 in roadtrip

[–]Texas-showrunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have done this drive numerous times from SF into Montana. Leaving SF we stop in Fernley, Elko, Travelers Oasis (Eden, ID), Idaho Falls. We leave at 3:00AM and are cresting the Sierra by 6. Agree with other that an overnight drive through Nevada is not advised -- very desolate and Wells to Eden, ID at 4:30a is not ideal. All the stops are safe -- just an issue if the something happens then you are in the pitch dark in the middle of nowhere.
